Does "Shogun" Run The Risk Of Following In His Brother's Footsteps?
Everyone is talking about the earth shattering, Godzilla/Mothra-esque encounter between Dan Henderson and "Shogun" Rua from UFC 139 (I haven't checked, but I think Tokyo was destroyed). From the fight itself, to the judging, to a rematch, and just about everything in between. However, one thing I haven't seen any mention of, despite their being discussion about what a hellacious beating both fighters took, is the physiological toll particularly on the Brazilian. I think Dan Chiappetta wrote about how he doesn't want to see a rematch, and listed the particularly savage nature of the fight as one of the reasons, however he's missing a deeper point.

For those long-time MMA fans, you’re probably quite familiar with Mauricio’s brother Murilo “Ninja” Rua, and his tribulations. For those less seasoned, Murilo is the elder brother of Mauricio, who was at one time thought to be the future of MMA, like his younger sibling. The second half of the elder Rua’s career was marred by the fact that “Ninja” had allegedly suffered brain damage in his 2004 bout with Sergei Kharitonov, a vicious knockout loss in which he was fighting well above any reasonable weight for himself. This situation was only exacerbated throughout his career, with four additional KO or TKO losses coming after the Kharitonov bout, culminating in a performance against Tom Watson where an almost Zombie-like version of Murilo was essentially put out to pasture by the British Middleweight, and had those close to him calling for his retirement. Thankfully, that was his final bout, and a comeback is not expected from him at this point, as it should stay. For you sadists out there, here is that fight:
Now, “Shogun” is obviously nowhere near reaching the mental depreciation “Ninja” displayed, as slurred speech and a meandering thought process were clearly shown in interviews during the latter stages of his career. Hell, he’s nowhere near the physical or technical depreciation of his brother either, as Mauricio has always been the superior fighter. “Shogun” is yet to even be knocked out in his 26-fight career, and if you were to judge the likelihood of that happening solely on the Henderson fight, he may never be. The man’s skull seems to be constructed in a way similar to Henderson’s or BJ Penn’s, in that it would take something truly remarkable for him to lose consciousness. He has however been involved in his fair share of wars in MMA (he was dropped multiple times in both the Rogerio Nogueira and Henderson fights), and took a rather severe beating against Jon Jones. Rua has now had his brain seriously rattled in two of his last three fights, and while he hasn’t been knocked out, we’ve seen that it doesn’t always take a knockout to cause the type of trauma that can affect a fighter later in life.
Given the family history, I can only hope that were “Shogun” to ever start showing some of the symptoms his brother has displayed for the past seven years, that someone (hopefully Murilo himself), would step in and tell him that it’s not worth it. “Shogun” has already cemented himself in the annals of MMA for all the right reasons, he would have no reason to continue on if it put his life after MMA at risk.

this is brutally difficult to read.
With the large vocabulary and poor sentence structure, it seems to be written from the point of view of an English professor who, ironically, has been knocked out too many times.

I thought it was quite legible.
He’s not using large vocabulary either; the most he did was use forms of the word ‘depreciation’ more than once.
It seems, to me, that the guy is a non native English speaker writing quite normally.

All seemed alright to me apart from the link to the other blog.
And was pretty interesting as I never knew about the problems his brother saw and just thought he lost a few and retired.

Just as an example:
This is one sentence:
This situation was only exacerbated throughout his career, with four additional KO or TKO losses coming after the Kharitonov bout, culminating in a performance against Tom Watson where an almost Zombie-like version of Murilo was essentially put out to pasture by the British Middleweight, and had those close to him calling for his retirement.

I disagree with your example.
In the sentence quoted I counted only 3 words I’d consider uncommon:
exacerbated – bout – culminating
Of those 3 I think “bout” can’t be considered all that unusual due to context (fighting sport’s blog post). The other two aren’t exactly rare and were used correctly.
As to structure, I believe commas were used correctly, but they work a bit differently in Portuguese, so I wouldn’t know for sure. The sentence could have been broken up in smaller ones, but works perfectly fine as is and I had no trouble understanding it the first time I read it. My only objection to it is that last phrase, which really could have used either a whole sentence to itself or a “which” between the “and” and the “had”.
Just my 2 cents.
It very well could be an English as a second language situation
The example should have been clearer- that’s an example of poor sentence structure.
That is one giant run on sentence and a non sequiter wedged in between.
No matter how you look at it, it’s poor writing. I freely admit that I’m just being a cranky old writing-nazi- since no one else has a problem with it, I’ll move along, haha.

Shogun took some good shots from Lyoto in the 1st fight,
but Jones never came close to knocking him unconscious with punches to the head. The Hendo fight is the most rocked that Rua has been since Rogerio cleaned his clock with a left hook.
These are NOT the same as the straight up brutal knockouts that Murilo suffered. Truth be told, Shogun has always been much more talented than Ninja, and is in no way “following in his footsteps.” With the way Shogun fights, balls to the wall, his chin will probably deteriorate towards the end of his career, but it shows no signs of slowing this far.
"God loves violence... Why else would there be so much of it? It's in us. It's what we are. We wage war, we burn sacrifices, and pillage and plunder and tear at the flesh of our brothers. And why? Because God gave us violence to wage in his honor... There's no moral order at all. There's just this: can my violence conquer yours?"

Watching Ninja/Kharitonov now is a little uncomfortable
Ninja is so out of shape and Kharitonov is noticeably bigger than him. It is pretty insane. I don’t know how his trainers let him compete. If you are going to fight someone bigger, you have to be in shape and on point or you are going to get hurt.
Also agreed on all points.

Google rua vs. kharitonov
MMA core probably has the best quality (even though it still looks like it was filmed with a potato).

Jon Jones definitely hurt/rocked Shogun with his punches/strikes

It’s bad enough when BE simply plugs other SB Nation sites like the incessant MMA Nation plugs, but this is too much.

I don't want to go to his blog
And I don’t want to follow you on Twitter.
For me details, email me.
No, you're not drunk. I am this good-looking.
The only reason this article is bull is because shogun at least has made it to the top
he made it to the top in pride he made it to the top in the ufc. he bested his brother on all levels and has beat and has been beaten by better people. with the way shogun’s legs are once he gets out the ufc i see him not fighting any more. ninja was a good fighter but shogun is a legend and that’s a fact. ALSO THE MOST IMPOTANT FACT SHOGUN FIGHTS IN HIS PROPER WEIGHTCLASS. LIKE ROB YOUNG SAID THE PEOPLE ON THIS SITE LINK US TO OTHER ANOTHER SITE AND MANY OF US DON’T GO CHECK OUT THEY ARTICLES. NO ONE WANTS TO GO TO YOUR BLOG
Damn...calm down
The dude is specifically talking about Shogun potentially taking too much damage like Ninja did.
He isn’t saying Shogun is going to be some sort of alsoran who isn’t remembered for anything but the punishment he took. I mean, WE ALL know that Shogun is the better fighter than Ninja and has had a more successful career by a large margin…that’s not what this fanpost is even about.

Shogun HAS to clean up his striking D. I think he is capable of doing it but he just gets sloppy at times. To me, Machida I was the blue print to success for Shogun. He was controlled and calculated. He still got hit but he minimized risk with his patience and looked for openings to exploit.

What's even worse about this
is that the posters rarely come in after the initial post and comment.
Just a troll for some hits that they don’t get because the first readers are nice enough to not waste all our time. And a big thank you to the copy and paste artists for that… oh, watch out for SOPA with that guys!

First, I have no interest in reading/following your blog. It’s annoying that you posted like a paragraph (that did not make me interested in reading the rest of the article) and then linked your blog.
Second, your article was interesting (thanks to Hal for posting it), but why would I go follow your blog when BE constantly pumps higher quality writing/MMA insight onto the internet?
Anyway, I am sick of reading through fanposts and finding that most of them are just a paragraph with a link to some amateur blog.
