my seven favourite all-time MMA kicks
Just thinking the other day, I compiled a list of my 7 favourite MMA kicks
1. Anthony Pettis vs Ben Henderson 'showtime' kick
2. Edson Barboza vs Terry Etim wheel kick
3. Lyoto Machida vs Randy Couture jumping front kick
4. Anderson Silva vs. Vitor Belfort front kick
5. Mirko Crocop vs Igor Vovchanchyn head kick
6. Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Mirko Crocop head kick
7. Alistair Overeem vs. Brock Lesnar liver kick
Have I forgotten any?
[EDIT: wanted to include a Bas Rutten liver kick, but too many to choose from]

Well, here’s the thing. 19Miles posted two gifs, and George75 then replied to the first one asking “who is this?”. The first gif is indeed Zaromskis, same as the youtube video you posted now, so that’s what I told him

For clarififaction...
Mariusz “Whitemare” Zaromskis is the guy in the first .gif doing the front flip/front handspring kick.
Marcus “Lelo” Aurelio (not to be confused with Marcus “Maximus” Aurelio who choked out Gomi) is the guy doing the copoeira double wheel kick in the second .gif. He also unleashed a ridiculous flying switch kick KO a couple months ago which can be seen here Aurelio Flying Switch Kick KO
The other clip that’s been going around recently of a capoeira wheel kick KO is of Cairo Rocha from December. Rocha wheel kick KO
Forgive me if any of those links don’t work; I’m used to BBcode and don’t post here much.
Ah, cool. Thanks for clarifying! I thought it sounded a little strange that the Aurelio I know (BJJ guy) would be knocking out guys with crazy kicks.

Other notables not yet mentioned...
In chronological order, here’s a bunch for your consideration that haven’t been mentioned yet:
-Patrick Smith on Rudyard Moncayo – UFC 6, 1995 – “Missile Kick” – at the time, this defied explanation
-Marco Ruas on Paul Varelans – UFC 7, 1995 – Repeated leg kicks. Maybe the best leg kick destruction in early modern MMA. A few of these are just ridiculous.
-Maurice Smith on Marcus “Conan” Silveira – EF 3, 1996 – Head kick KO. Likely the first high profile head kick KO in modern MMA.
-Pete Williams on Mark Coleman – UFC 17, 1998 – Head kick KO. For many, this may have been the first head kick KO they ever saw in MMA, and a Lions Den guy on a Hammer House former UFC HW champion made this huge. Perpetual highlight fodder. Plus shoes.
-Kazushi Sakuraba on Vitor Belfort – Pride 5, 1999 – Spinning back kick to body. This is the shot that made Vitor shamble across ring and casually lay down.
-Pedro Rizzo on Randy Couture – UFC 31, 2001 – Repeated leg kicks. Rizzo does Ruas proud by just murdering Couture’s legs, in a highly contentious decision loss. There’s a single one around round 2 or 3 that is absolutely glorious.
-Chuck Liddell on Renato “Babalu” Sobral – UFC 40, 2002 – Head kick KO. Babalu ducks directly into eating a Chuck’s shin, on one of the highest profile UFC up to that date.
-Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic on Heath Herring – Pride 26, 2003 – Body kick. Crocop kicks Herring so hard that on the still shot, it looks like Mirko’s leg is buried in Heath’s torso.
-Yves Edwards on Josh Thomson – UFC 49, 2004 – Jumping headkick KO. Edwards chases Thomson across the cage, and as Josh attempts a spinning backfist on the fly, Yves hits one of the great head kick KOs of all time.
-Tim Sylvia on Tra Telligman – UFC 54, 2005 – Head kick KO. Head kick KO from a 6’8" heavyweight that rarely throws kicks. Shocking.
-Georges St. Pierre on Matt Hughes (II) – UFC 65, 2006 – Leg kick sweep under check. An already dazed Hughes checks a low kick from GSP, so GSP throws the kick again, this time right under/through the check, and through the back plant foot. Hughes drops. You see it in Muay Thai on the regular, but not something you see if a ton of MMA fights circa 2007.
-Anthony Njokuani on Chris Horodecki – WEC 45, 2009 – Head kick KO. Horodecki, against his better judgement, runs across the ring with his back half turned. Njokuani relives the Edwards vs Thomson moment.
There’s a bunch of stuff that’s been mentioned already that is obviously notable, especially Rocha and Zaromskis’ recent acrobatics, Siver’s reel of multiple spinning back kicks, etc. There’s also some stuff here that’s not even been mentioned yet, like Brian Ebersole’s half cartwheel kick (what’s the best one he’s landed?), everything Anthony Pettis did in the Shane Roller fight (before the Henderson fight made us forget that), and a bunch of Brazilian kicks and Axe kicks from a number of guys.
Thanks for the good post, the 7 you hit on are all solid.

Correct, Tito Ortiz vs Wanderlei Silva from UFC 25 in 2000
That clip is from about 2 minutes into the 3rd round, in what was a 25 minute 5 round fight.
Ortiz dropped Silva badly with a punch in round 2. But in round 3, Silva clips Ortiz and Ortiz reacts as you see above, which I believe some people at the time referred to as the “Run for Life.” Other than that, the majority of the fight was Ortiz getting takedowns and staying in top control for a less than exciting victory.

Highlight from MMACore
As I recall...
this was in overtime (no draws in early UFC). Coleman was in uber-zombie mode, barely had enough energy to throw a punch.
In other words, this was 32 year old Mark Coleman fighting like a 45 year old Mark-Coleman after 3 rounds.
Reppin' the 202 for The Voice's in Paul Harris' Head. BECW Season 12.
Your recollection is mostly correct...
You’re right, it was just into the start of a 3 minute overtime, after 12 minutes of regulation, and Coleman was gassed as hell. He never even really moved out of his corner when the overtime started.
There were, however, judges decisions if it went the full length, which was in part caused by the early draw debacles of Shamrock vs Gracie at UFC 5, and Shamrock vs Taktarov at UFC 7.
UFC 17 is a weird one.
At the time, most of the fights on that card were 12 minute regulation, 3 minute overtime period, and then the judges would decide it if it went 15. Henderson beat Goes and Newton both by 15 minute decisions that night. However, the Liddell vs Hernandez fight went to a decision after 12 minutes with no overtime (probably because it was a prelim) and the Frank Shamrock v Jeremy Horn fight, which didn’t air on the PPV at the time, was scheduled for 15 minutes regulation and 2 × 3 minute overtimes if necessary (probably because if was a non-tourney fight for a belt.).
Going back through the early UFCs and trying to figure out the exact rule-set they were on at the time is a trip.
Best part: The dude in the corner.

Undoubtedly awesome, but if you open up the door to pure kickboxing footage, you’re going to get a flood of Peter Grahm Rolling Thunders, Hug getting a spinning back kick TKO WITH A KICK TO THE THIGH and ax kicking everything in sight, Badir Hari doing all types of ridiculous stuff including giving and receiving spinning back kicks with Stephen Leko, and a hundred Thai guys throwing lead foot head kicks faster than I can even see.
Keeping it straight MMA is a lot more interesting at this point, because first, most of these guys are not professional kickboxers, and second, these shots are way harder to land in an MMA environment, and third, until not that long ago, much of this stuff was thought to be impossible under full fight rules.
The Hug TKO was more of a kick right to the knee.
"God loves violence... Why else would there be so much of it? It's in us. It's what we are. We wage war, we burn sacrifices, and pillage and plunder and tear at the flesh of our brothers. And why? Not to be contrary, and it obviously doesn't matter, but
Hug’s heel hits Bernardo in the thigh, a few inches above his knee. It may have locked out Bernardo’s knee and hyper-extended it, as he had all his weight planted on that leg, but Hug does appear to hit him in the meat of the thigh.

I just don’t really like opening the door to kickboxing highlights in a thread like this, because kickboxing is a completely different world. Can I get a Bill Wallace hook kick amen from the congregation?

One huge one that completely slipped my mind
I can’t believe I forgot this one.
Renzo Gracie on Oleg Taktarov – MARS, 1996 – Upkick KO. This was the first time I can think of that anyone did any significant damage from their back with an upkick.
Video: Renzo Gracie v Oleg Taktarov Jump to about 1:10 for the kick.

without this fight i wonder if renzo would be legend status
this and the fight with miletich are his only big wins iirc
I’m not sure how to define “legend” status but Renzo has quite a few things going for him when it comes to accomplishments and recognition.
-Most obviously, he’s a Gracie, and one who was very open to cross training and striking.
-The year before he KO’d Taktarov, he won the WCC tournament beating 3 guys, including boxer James Warring (who had just beaten Eric Pulson) in one night.
-He was involved in the legendary Egenio Tadeu match that never finished because the fans rioted.
-He was involved in one of the longest, and arguably the most boring, MMA fights of all time, in a no time limit match with Sanae Kikuta. Renzo, thankfully, caught a guillotine after an excruciating hour plus of two guys in guard doing nothing. Do not watch this under any circumstances.
-Tapped former UFC HW Champ Mo Smith in Rings.
-Started career undefeated for 11 fights (9-0-1 1 NC)
-His run against Miltetich, Newton, and F. Shamrock (DQ) was really just icing on the cake at that point, and all of those guys were in very late portions of their career. I believe Miletich’s neck was ruined and he probably never should have been in the ring when they fought.
-His losses are to a pretty decent list: Tamura, Sakuraba, Henderson, Oyama, Newton, Penn, Hughes.

I'm hoping that's Johnathan Ivey.
Just checked. Awesomely, it appears to be. This guy’s ratio of skill level to awesome things done in the ring, has got to be as good as anyone in the world.
If he never did anything but The People’s Elbow, he would have been a .gif legend, but he seems to constantly turn up doing something tremendous:

Actually, for a sub .500, rotund HW MMA fighter, Ivey is pretty decent with leglocks, and has hit some pretty slick rolling kneebars in grappling tourneys.

I was just thinking the other day that I’d love to see a liver kick / punch highlight reel or thread full of gifs…after watching Tito Ortiz and Brock Lesnar crumple from them, I feel like the good old liver kick is making a comeback.

He did a fairly good job with the low kicks throughout, even into the last minute.
Much more concerning problems were his circling aimlessly, gassing hard by the end of the second round, and getting soundly out-wrestled by Kimbo Slice.
He did drop Slice with a real nice leg kick later in the fight, that I unfortunately can’t find a .gif of.
I wouldn't say "throughout".
Houston basically had spurts of drilling Kimbo with low kicks. I honestly think that he was afraid of Kimbo the urban legend’s punching prowess, instead of objectively noting Kimbo’s strengths/ weaknesses, and fighting him earnestly.
