BJJ Training at Marcelo Garcia's Gym Tomorrow

Tomorrow at approximately 11:30 Am eastern time, i will for the first time have pure Bjj training in a professionally run gym. I am psyched and nervous and finding it hard to sleep. I will definitely post my experiences over the next week of my free training session. I'm eager to learn all i can over the next week and hope i pick up on it very fast. But i am nervous about bothering some of the more experienced guys there for advice so if anyone has the time for some last minute advice here, it would be welcome. Thanks and wish me luck.

I can’t help you, I’ve only trained the stand up game. Good luck though.

Depending on how much time a week you spend.

It’ll take a lot more than that hahaha. But if you’ve trained at all you’d know that.

I was gonna say the same thing

You can get proficient in that time if you work hard on it, but if you wanna be good it takes years.

I was throwing literally hundreds of jabs from every angle you can imagine at home before I ever felt really comfortable just letting them fly in the gym.

Just put it the time at home

Shadow boxing with good form will do wonders. Hands up, chin down.

If you have 10 minutes you can spare at home, it will go a long way.

well ive already got stuff like that down from my previous training

i really need to work on putting my combinations with my hands together because im kind of kick heavy on the attack. i also need to get hit more because as of now im still not used to it like i want to be.

Shadow boxing

is a good way to work combos, too.

I’m sure you know how to use good form, but the more you train the better you’ll be.

So much this.

I never thought shadow boxing could help as much as it does.

Most gyms do a warm up, like falling and stuff, then a slow roll. Then they usually go over a few techniques, then drill them. Some schools do some live rounds at the end of class, too.

Slow roll is just grappling easy and slow to warm up

You either go no gi

or they let you borrow one.

Wear sweat pants and under armor

if you have them.

That'll do

The sweats are just nice because you won’t get other people’s sweat on you. And you can use them as gi pants if you have a top you can borrow.

If you have shorts with no pockets, those are ideal. You can wear a rashguard (what UnderArmor is) or a somewhat closely fitting t-shirt.

Roanoke Rapids, NC

It’s a little town on the border of VA the closest gym I could find was four-three hours away and I’m a senior in highschool so can’t be goin all the way out there everyday.

Needless to say I hope I can eventually open a gym out here (maybe one day..)

Oh yeah

I plan on finding a college in NC where MMA gyms are around so I could train and go to school

Yeah I thought about joining since wrestling is always key in MMA

Just stay relaxed and don't use much force

When learning the techniques, be gentle with your training partner, and they will happily teach you everything they can when it is your turn to practice techniques on them.

Secondly, when (if) you roll at the end of class, try not to wrestle. Once again stay relaxed and be ok with tapping out. If you muscle against everything without technique you will gas fast, and not be able to get much out of the session once that happens.

Learning and practicing BJJ is a lot of fun. However, one thing I would warn you is not to expect to be Roger Gracie in a short period of time. If you are not picking something up for whatever reason, just keep at it, and it will eventually come, so try not to get too discouraged as you are learning something new if that situation arises. Basics are extremely important, and can’t be stressed enough.
Don’t rush into anything either and try to do things very fast. Take your time as that will allow you not to get too sloppy. It’s all easier said than done though. You are expected to make mistakes as it is your first day, but learning from them is what’s important.

Personally I don’t go for submissions when I go up roll with someone I don’t know. Some people have injuries that you don’t know about, or have an ego you don’t want to deal with. Stuff like that.

Dude

Congrats! From watching a lot of mginaction, I would watch your neck in transition and not hesitate when passing the open guard because those fools have nasty guillotines and all kind of sweeps.
