2011 Bloody Elbow Staff Predictions Standings

PrintI realize I'm a little late with this, since we're already approaching the second UFC event of 2012. Honestly I never considered fanposting this, but BE stalwart Blackout612 made the suggestion and it made a lot of sense. If you've spent any time frequenting this here website, you've likely noticed that the staff makes picks for each UFC and Strikeforce event. We're all like 68-1 on SF picks for 2011 (damn you Rockhold!), since Scott Coker cared more about excitement than quality matchups, but it gets (mildly) interesting when you look at our UFC stats. Unless you're Matt Roth. Then you just want to burst into tears and go sleep in a trainyard.
I started out as a commenter, just like you, and have been keeping track of the staff picks since the start of 2010. Don't ask why, I'm still not sure. I paid/bluffed my way into making picks of my own midway through 2011, and have done quite well so far. I'm not posting this to show off (look at that guy atop the 2011 winning percentage list! Ain't he lovely?), I'm posting it because I'm a stats geek and it appears that I'm not the only one out there. Without further ado, here's how BE fared in 2011. And as a bonus, here's how BE fared in 2010 too.

What kind of conclusions can you draw from this? Well, either 2010 was way harder to make picks for, or...BE's 2011 staff knows MMA a little better than the 2010 staff. Just sayin'.

Obviously there’s a difference in staff, but would you say that the addition of FB prelims and the fact that more and more fights are available on youtube means less guys enter the UFC as unknown quantities making prelims easier to pick? Or is it just that you started doing stats and kept everybody (sans Roth) on their toes?
Anyway, I still hope that you all sign up on MMA Playground at some point. The trash-talking would be epic.

Interesting thoughts. Having the ability to easily watch all the prelims is definitely a plus. But I have found the addition of FW and BW to complicate things a bit – just 2 more divisions worth of guys to know about. This year could be a tough one – lots of cards = lots of fighters = lots of guys coming in to the UFC with relatively low exposure. Tonight’s card is a good example of that. Sometimes you’re going with picks based off of credentials, camps, and, like, 1 YouTube video of a 30 second KO.

I always thought there was lots of tape on new UFC guys and it’s been that way for a while, but it’ll definitely get tougher in 2012 with all the cards as Fraser said. Part of it has to do with the fact that it’s just a fun thing and some take it more seriously than others, IMO. For instance, Roth isn’t really that clueless about MMA (cough), he just picks Americans over everyone else all the time even if it makes no sense.
I’ve been playing on playground a few years now, but not in the Civil War obviously (I don’t think staff’s allowed in it, are they?)

I’d like to see Roth back this notion of competence up with better picks …
And yeah, it’s pretty easy to tell from some of the prelim predictions that some flip a coin and others try really hard. I agree that this year looks tough in terms of entry-level guys. Flyweight in particular is going to be downright nasty.
Regarding the civil war, staff members were not allowed when it was a BE vs Mania thing. These days it’s a BE only thing so I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t or shouldn’t be playing. I count 10 of you right now – this season we’re doing 11-man teams with the top 10 scores counting. If you could round up an extra player (Josh Nason? Ben Thapa? Kid Nate? Luke Thomas?) I’m sure you’d be welcomed with open arms (and clenched fists).

I don’t think you can get that stat. However, Playground do a list of all-time leaders where you need 250 picks to qualify … crazybones is ranked 6th in winning percentage.

PG only lists career winning percentage. I really doubt he was ever at 74% but before this season he was at 69.7% rather than his current 69.3% meaning PG would have listed him as having a 70% career record.

Secondary league means picking HDNet/Shooto/Dream/Strikeforce/Bellator fights. It looks like fun when there’s a Strikeforce event on but I’m not sure how much fun it would be to pick Titan FC fights.

The easiest way to do that
Would be to create a Google Docs spreadsheet that automatically updates the totals when you type in an event’s results, make it viewable to anyone with the link and then go to tinyurl.com and create a custom link to the spreadsheet, eg. tinyurl.com/BEstaff.
