UFC On FX: Pat Barry Says Ground Game Has Experienced 'Tremendous Growth'

PrintPat Barry is not getting an easy fight tomorrow night when he steps into the cage with Christian Morecraft at UFC on FX 1. Barry sits as a slight favorite right now (as high as -175) but he is going to need to be able to keep the fight on the feet, and avoid any sort of ground battle. But Barry tells MMA Weekly that his ground game is no longer the issue it once was in a new video:

Wrestling and jiu-jitsu and strength are my weakness when it comes to fighting. Punching and kicking can always get better, but it's the wrestling and grappling and what not, that's my Achilles heel. [DeathClutch] is a gym that's filled with gigantic wrestlers who all grapple, Comprido is the jiu-jitsu coach. They're all stronger than I am, they're all taller than I am, which is everyone I fight. I'm the smallest guy in the room. This is what I need to be surrounded by. The world doesn't know it yet, but [I've gained] a tremendous amount of growth in my wrestling and my jiu-jitsu and my poise while being on my back. Strength, just all around confidence, tremendous amounts. The only problem is that with all that growth and with all that gain, you now have to actually do it live.

I'm intrigued to see what happens with the Deathclutch training facility now that Brock has left.
As far as I understood, it wasn’t a gym that was stacked full of up-and-coming fighters. Most of the guys were brought in simply to help Brock train.
I suspect he’s not training right now, now has the desire too.

Morecraft will get beat up on the feet and the minute he goes for a takedown, he’ll submit Barry with ease.

People forget he did get Mitrione on the ground a couple of times
But he was completely exhausted after taking such an ass kicking. Morecraft is fairly strong.

I mean, it’s no joke that Barry is on thin ice with the promotion. He is 3-4 in the UFC…he NEEDS this win to stick around.
At this point it’s one fight at a time…he has to manage to go on a win STREAK, not just get a win…but he has to win a few in a row to sort of get some insurance with the company so that the next time he loses he won’t get cut.
If he wins this one, then loses his next fight…he is still probably done.

If by done you mean "gets another three chances", then yes
They love Barry. If he wins, he’s good for at least one, probably two or three more losses.

On one hand, Barry's just not very good at MMA
On the other, the dude was living out of his car before the Hardonk fight. It’s hard not to root for him personally, but after his last two fights I’ve given up on him being a UFC mainstay.

if he didn’t fight so poorly.
I really love Barry
