Shogun breaks ties with Rafael Cordeiro of Kings MMA for good
via lapelea.org
I’m not going back to train there. When I decided to train in Sao Paulo, it was a decision of mine, but I never closed the door to Rafael. I always kept a friendship with him. But, unfortunately, he was upset and said some things I did not like, and that made me close the door to him. I don’t think about training with him (anymore). When I went to Sao Paulo, I didn’t mean to become his enemy. The friendship was the same. But he said some unfortunate things.
Before each fight I analyze my opponent and where it would be a good camp for me. For the Dan Henderson fight, I thought Sao Paulo would be a better camp. I analized that close to my team. So I always search what’s best for me. If I think the best place is in China, (then) I will train in China. I sacrifice myself and my family supports me.

China?
g’damn Shogun
Years ago someone told Polynesian DNA that everyone was surrounded by sea monsters and it believed them. It made humans that were immune to head injuries, fast enough to run on the highway, and big enough to use the carpool lane. Putting two of them in the same ring is like telling your local tectonic plates to fuck themselves.

Seriously who is in China that Shogun needs to train with?
Is he going to the Shaolin temple or something awesome like that?

He said “if”, meaning that it doesn’t matter where in the world the best place to train would be, he would go there to train.

Surely the bit about China was just hypothetical? If I think the best place is the North of England I will train in England
Proud veteran of the elite unstoppable predictions juggernaut known as the K1 Level Predictions Team (2011-2011)
I didn't think the bit about China thing would be so confusing
he’s using it as an example of it doesn’t matter where he trains as long as it is the best place to train. China is sometimes used in common conversations in Brazil because it’s a very, very, far away place, so people tend to use it to draw examples.

I thought I missed some story on Shogun hooking up with some camp in China from the way he was talking. Hopefully he doesn’t go somewhere in Las Vegas, lots of disappointing results when guys set up camp there.

yeah
my bad, didn’t know how else to illustrate it on the translation, is there something similar in English speaking countries? would be cool for me to know.
I call you, I talk to me - Anderson Silva
You’re translation was perfectly fine… I understood what you meant right away, and those that didn’t should blame the American school system. People need to understand what the word “if” means…

ha, thanks
I guess I could have included a “than” in there as well though, matter of fact I’ll include that now!

I’ll agree with Shnak, the translation was fine. I actually thought the two guys at the top were joking when they thought he was going to China, so I didn’t correct them. Haha.

"on the moon" would have worked
It’s not a special English idiom or anything but it would have made it obvious that Shogun wasn’t talking about a specific place.
Also, you wanted “then” instead of “than”. Than is for comparisons (this is better than that) while Then is for cause-effect relationships (if this happens then I will do that).
Never approach a vast undertaking with a half-vast plan.
thanks
I do usually think of “than” for comparison, and “then” as time related, but you’re right, “then” would fall into the time-related event of him going to train in China.
I call you, I talk to me - Anderson Silva
actually
now that I think about it, wouldn’t “than” be more accurate? it’s not really time-related, it is a comparison. English is such a pain, we have the same word for “than” and “then”.
I call you, I talk to me - Anderson Silva
I'm really curious people
if someone can get back to me with this.
I went to Brazil then I went to China
I rather go to Brazil than go to China
both are correct, right? Shogun’s quote would fall in the second example of “than”, no?
I call you, I talk to me - Anderson Silva
But as far as the quote goes above,
it would be “then” because it’s time. He’s basically saying he would only go to China when it was the best place. Does that make sense?
by Mandmeisterx on Jan 19, 2012 12:51 PM EST up reply actions
Just to be clear...
I went to Brazil, then I went to China is correct. It is a sequence.
“I would rather go to Brazil than China” is also correct (now that we included the would- but the contraction “I’d” would also be appropriate there). It is an either/or situation. I felt that Mandmeisterx was saying your second quote was wrong-it is not. FYI.
Than is a conjunction used in comparisons, and then is used for time. But to be encouraging, many native english speakers use than in cases where they should use then.
I thought Lay N Pray was a stupid insult until I watched Tyrone Woodly fight.
but
it does sound like a comparative statement.
“If I think the best place is in China, (then) I will train in China.”
But think of it like this.
1: I think the best place to train is in China.
2: I will Train in China.
That should help frame it. Whoa, did I really just write that much about grammar? I am soooo sorry. wow. lol at myself.
I thought Lay N Pray was a stupid insult until I watched Tyrone Woodly fight.
yeah
I actually searched it online after this whole thing, and I found a page that basically says use “than” for comparison, and “then” for everything else (because it appears it is also used to non-time related stuff). but I learned something knew today that I thought I had it already learned. poor Shogun and Rafael, no one cares about them :p
I call you, I talk to me - Anderson Silva
So, would you say that we care more about grammar then Shogun and Rafael or that we care more about grammar than Shogun and Rafael? ;-)

it really sucks
not sure what Rafael told Shogun personally, but in the media for example when speaking to Mauro Ranallo he said Shogun doesn’t like to be pushed in training, and that his camp is filled with “yes man” type of guys that will never push him to improve himself. I tend to agree with Rafael and hope Shogun finds a place where he’s not the boss, because otherwise I’m afraid he’ll never get back into title contention.

Yeah, I remember reading that too.
It sounded a little rough, but Rafa always seemed to me like a guy who wants what’s best to Shogun and feels his training would be better. Can’t say I disagree with him, given that Shogun’s best moments happened with Rafael as his trainer.

Right. I'm saying Shogun is wrong.

You don’t think that guy can find some weight to lose? A little more time jumping rope and running and that a food scale and fridge full of tilapia filets and spinach would get him on weight.
To compare with the eye test, here is Kenny Florian fighting at middleweight 40lbs heavier than his last fight:

A little bit of diet and weight cutting make Shogun one of the gnarliest middleweight fighters. Might be too late to make the switch but Shogun could easily drop 20lbs.

Ten wins and three title shots.

And that's the reason people think he could drop
It seems he carries a bit of extra weight in his fights that could be lost, without losing his power and even increasing his speed.
