UFC 142 Results: Anthony Johnson 'Likely Cut' Following Loss To Vitor Belfort

Anthony Johnson (seen being kicked by Vitor Belfort) is likely gone from the UFC. (Photo by Josh Hedges/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)

After failing to make weight for the third time in his UFC career, it looks like Anthony Johnson is going to be let go by the promotion. Johnson had moved up to middleweight after a career at welterweight but still missed weight by eleven pounds. The reasoning for his failed weight cut was that he felt ill the day of the weigh-in and was told to take fluids by doctors.

Johnson made things easier on the promotion when he appeared exhausted early in the first round against Vitor Belfort and his exhaustion allowed Belfort to hit him and take his back to get the rear naked choke finish. Larry Pepe of ProMMARadio tweeted this during the post-fight presser:

Dana White: "We are probably going to cut Anthony Johnson"
Jan 15 via webFavoriteRetweetReply

Johnson is just too large of a man to keep trying to cut as much weight as he has all career. It's amazing to think that he made welterweight at any point given that he doesn't even look like a middleweight now. The guy appears to have the natural body size of a light heavyweight and it may be time for him to test that out.

The best move to score some points with the UFC may be to be very pubic in saying that he needs to fight at 205 and go out and have some success doing so on the regional scene. Or, even if he wants to stay at middleweight, he has to make the cut with ease repeatedly and prove that he can do it.

I truly believe we'd see him have better success if he stops wrecking his body with crazy weight cuts.

To be frank, he looked bigger than Rashad in that pre-fight video the UFC put out. He needs to be in a weight class he’s built for, and he needs to make sure he’s doing everything correctly in the weight cutting process. You can’t just throw yourself in a sauna and call it a day. You need to diet right in and out of camp, and make sure you’re not sweating everything off in a short period of time.

How do you miss weight by 11lbs, rehydrate a couple more pounds and then fuckin GAS in the 1st round….

by Ricardo Arguello on Jan 15, 2012 2:03 AM EST reply actions

Rogan said after weighing in at 205 at 12 PM, that Johnson was at 211 by fight time. If he didn’t have to essentially continue to cut weight for another day, he may have walked into that fight at 216-218 lbs.

I just really wish his weight cutting methods were leaked. Where is he cutting from? How much time is he giving himself? The eyeball test tells you that he’s doing all the wrong things, but is it stupidity, laziness, ignorance, or just poor coaching that keeps landing him in the same situation.

by GogoPlatter on Jan 15, 2012 2:28 AM EST up reply actions

Power lifters I knew cut for 5 days

but I have seen a powerlifters log of his weight cut where he literally cut 34lbs in a single day leading up to an event.

It is just him thinking he can do 110% of what he should everytime. He’s sacrificing his body to gain an edge and regardless of how muscular he is, his body doesn’t have enough water to drain to make weight this way.

by Hashmo on Jan 15, 2012 2:32 AM EST up reply actions

during the conference call

which was what…..like a week ahead of the event(?), he said he was weighing 219lbs. I usually laugh at people that buy into the Dolce Diet because all that information is available for free, online but I think he legitimately needs it. He needs someone that will come in and make meals for him, and tell him when to eat so he doesn’t have to think about it. I know plenty of people like that, they do well as long as someone is there doing all the thinking for them

I agree, too. I think he's done.

Not sure where he goes from here really. Strikeforce is owned by Zuffa – so they probably won’t touch him with a barge-pole. His only other options would be Bellator or BAMMA.

If he was serious about his career, he should issue a public appology to Vitor, the fand and the UFC – he should hire somebody like Mike Dolce to show he is taking the right steps and then, just maybe, he will work his way back into the ranks of the UFC.

I like watching Johnson fight, and he’s a nice guy – so I hope he comes back strong.

when you wreck your body cutting weight, the size and strength advantage tend to go out the window. It helps, but Johnson is legit.

Alves, Tibau and plenty other have no problems wrecking their bodies cutting a shit load of weight and are still bigger and stronger on fight day.

Do you think because Johnson isnt doing it right, or hes just doing too much at once? Because if I recall correctly, Tibau cuts from 190ish to 155. And when he fights, hes always stronger. Alves from 200+

by Ricardo Arguello on Jan 15, 2012 2:16 AM EST up reply actions

Aaron Riley walks between 180-190 when he isn’t fighting, so do many 155ers, Aaron is far from the biggest. I doubt he weights more then maybe 170 something when he begins his cut.

Also, for every big man who made a career of cutting weight, there are little men who cut little to no weight that own them. Evans, Machida, Edgar, Velasques, fedor, big nog, ect. Being bigger does not equal instant advantage. You site Alves and Tibau… Pretty much all there losses are to smaller men who cut less. How many times has Alves been criticized for gassing? A few… why does he gas? He’s so large and he has to cut so much weight.

Prime example, while most Judo players I know cut weight, I am always the smallest guy in my division on purpose (100 kg, I normally weight in at 222lbs, in jeans and a sweat shirt), I own the big guys despite the fact I tend to be at least 60 pounds smaller than my opponents.

no, because i tend to have the same issue

the little guys find angles and holes that don’t even exist for the big guys. I’ve seen it in boxing gyms too, the little guys dancing around the big guys, able to blast them with their most powerful shots because they are so much quicker. The big guys getting lit up because they are too slow with too little cardio to connect cleanly.

What annoyes me

Were the people almost blaming the doctors for him missing by 11 pounds and his response too. “Oh well they forced him to rehydrate and he was only 2 pounds away from making weight.” That doesn’t change the fact that he would have missed it either way. He was off by 11 pounds when the official weigh-ins rolled around. Having to stop 2 pounds above his goal was just his body giving out on him, his own fault for starting such a (still) drastic cut so late.

He needs to take some off to diet accordingly if he still wants to fight these lower classes, not start trying to cut weight two days before the fight.

Medical circumstances that arose due to his own inability to control his weight...

And begin his cut from a realistic start point which resulted in his body showing adverse effects to the cut and the need for medical intervention.

If he ate right, towed the line and minimized the damage a drastic weight cut like this could have on his body he wouldn’t be in this self imposed shit storm.

He's not talented because he can't fulfill his contracts regularly.

Has anybody missed weight by 12 pounds before in UFC history? That’s insane. And it’s because he’s too lazy or dumb to diet properly and then only dehydrate what is necessary. He kept bragging about being happy to eat and then had to dehydrate 20+ pounds. That’s not UFC material. Eat chicken breasts and spinach like everybody else or find another job.

Where did he start his cut from? Less than two weeks ago he was over 215lbs. So maybe he power dieted down to 210, then had to dehydrate the rest? That’s insane and stupid. He should have been around 200-205lbs less then two weeks out, and that’s for being a big 185er. Most are smaller than that but guys can make weight comfortably from there.

AJ is killing himself because he makes terrible decisions in camp. I have no sympathy for him nearly dying to make 185. It didn’t have to be dangerous but he willingly chose to damage his body.

His inability to make wieght doesn't take away from his proven talent

I’m not saying it deserves to be completely dismissed but I don’t think he should be cut.

He could easily be a competitor in a notoriously weak division, for one. And on top of that, he’s already been punished by losing 1/5 of his purse. They could continue to punish him by relegating him to the prelims. My point is, there are plenty of other options to punish him than letting a higher tier talent slip away to another organization.

I agree with you on this. They can simply keep him under contract and either make him fight on Facebook or just not schedule him for the next 6 to 9 months. If they keep him, he’s punished financially while he’s inactive, and it might be one of the few incentives that would get his attention. When they do get around to scheduling a fight for him, make it at LHW and demand he be within a certain weight range, say 210 to 215, by a week before his fight.

I keep personal rankings for reference up to 25 per division.

He is unranked right now. He left 170 and can’t go back, he’s 1-1 at middleweight against unranked competition, and 0-1 at light heavyweight. He isn’t committed to the sport and his whole career is more show than go. UFC doesn’t need him and shouldn’t have him on the roster until he proves he gives even a quarter of a shit.

After the announcement that he was fighting Belfor at MW Johnson said on his twitter specifically that 170 was his “home”, so why is it that he can’t go back?

You talk about his record at MW, which we both know is before he entered the UFC in 2007 which makes it entirely irrelevant and site a make-belive LHW record of 0-1 for his loss to Vitor tonight, which was actually a catchweight bout and you know that.

On top of that, you say the UFC doesn’t need him. You’re probably right, he’s in no way a proven draw. However, the UFC doesn’t need to be giving away established talent either.

His MW record is against Yoshida and Clementi.

Both were inside the UFC and fell within the 172-186lbs limits of middleweight. And there’s nothing make believe about that LHW record. I’m not sure you actually understand catchweights in combat sports.

Manny Pacquaio won a super welterweight (154) title from Margarito at a 150lbs catchweight. It was still a super welterweight fight because it was above 147 and below 154. MMA isn’t special and different from that. Vitor beating Rich Franklin is technically a light heavyweight fight and doesn’t count towards his middleweight record, for example.

As for why he can’t go “home” to 170… he just missed 185 by 12 pounds. His dehydrated weight was 197, and the reported low he got before losing feeling in appendages and having doctors terrified for his health was was 187. I can’t get any more polite than this: fuck off about him fighting at 170, that’s stupid.

And for what it's worth

He has two wins against current UFC fighters in Hardy and Brenneman, and Hardy should’ve been cut a long time ago. Brenneman is his only win against top 15 competition.

He should be at heavyweight

I mean cutting weight is not his thing so he should just bulk up and keep eating… i mean if i was him i would just say screw it im going to heavyweight. But seriously there needs to be a scale right next to the cage… problem solved… enough of this weigh in stuff days before the fight.. when we all know not one person weighs what they should weigh when they enter the cage…. its kinda like cheating and everyone is cool with it… We need real weight classes.

I couldn't believe how huge Johnson looked compared to Vitor..

But he looked like crap in the octagon. It’s like he put on loads of heavy muscle, which requires more oxygen and just gassed. He looked strong as hell powering through Vitor’s sprawl, but musclebound during the striking portion. Dude couldn’t even get back around after throwing a high kick.

All that out there, I say cutting him (temporarily) is best for both him and the UFC. Look at Alves, didn’t Dana threaten to cut him after missing 170 for the umpteenth time?

Yeah, it is tough to see them let go a guy who’s only had three fights go to decision and has won KOTN twice and FOTN once.

But still, he’s missed weight three times in his last ten fights. And he didn’t miss by just a little. He missed by substantial margins. His release is understandable from Zuffa’s point of view.

It’s funny, I just realized how ironic it is that a guy who likes to eat got subbed by a choke.

The fact of the matter is that Rumble is still pretty young, and I feel that he still has a lot of upside. I can see him getting some wins outside of Zuffa and get invited back into the UFC in the near future. It’s all about him making weight for his fights though and proving that he can consistently make weight.

If can fail to make weight 3 times on the biggest stage in MMA then i doubt he’ll have much respect for any of the regional scene promotions.

He has name value coming from the UFC, and despite his weight issues, he is a good fighter. Even fighters with sketchy history like Junie Browning still get bookings in the regional scene. To my knowledge about the regional scene, their standards are not that high that they won’t book someone like Anthony Johnson.

It honestly wouldn’t surprise me if regional promoters booked Johnson at fights at Light Heavyweight or some sort of catchweight. I would imagine that they would want him on their events despite the weight issues as he could maybe draw some fans in to watch their show.

This guy clearly needs his hand held upto fight day. Getting cut might wake him up, but I somehow doubt it.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the UFC doesn’t cut him with volume of cards they’re putting on and seeing that he still has potential.

If they don’t cut him he’ll need to fight at LHW. He clearly cannot make weight in the lighter classes.

And people need to give up on the notion that the UFC is going to “strikeforce” him. The UFC has “sent” no one to Strikeforce and they won’t start now. Jardine wallowed on cards in third world countries where he wasn’t paid before getting signed to Strikeforce. MMA fans just make shit up and take it as fact.
