Let's Clarify "Back of the Head"
From mmajunkie.com
"Strikes are not permissible in the nape of the neck area up until the top of the ears. Above the ears, permissible strikes do not include the Mohawk area from the top of the ears up until the crown of the head. The crown of the head is found where the head begins to curve.
In other words, strikes behind the crown of the head and above the ears are not permissible within the Mohawk area. Strikes below the top of the ear are not permissible within the nape of the neck area."

I'm assuming that the reasoning is that the nape is where the spine & occipital lobe are located

Because God gave us violence to wage in his honor... There's no moral order at all. There's just this: can my violence conquer yours?"

only one shot landed in the "Mohawk" area
the funny thing is i remember yamamsaki warning him during the middle of the flurry, but in the instant replay it was the last hammerfist he threw (Near the very end of the flurry) that landed on the crown! it will prolly get overturned by the UFC to a No-Contest

I think everyone agrees that the second to last is definitely to the back of the head.
Aside from that there are a number of shots that are more of a grey area, landing towards the back corner that could be argued hit behind the ears and not above the ears, putting them in the “nape of the neck” territory. Complicating things further is the fact that these hammerfists weren’t the cleanest shots, a couple land more wrist and forearm than with actual gloves, and a few shots might have touched Prater’s ear if his arm wasn’t in the way.
My feeling is that there’s a lot more middle ground than people are admitting here. It might not have been the right call, but I wouldn’t say it was a horrible call.
