Floyd Mayweather Will Not Face Robert Guerrero May 5 According To Golden Boy CEO
Given that this fight is now almost certain to go head to head with the UFC's third effort on Fox these Floyd Mayweather updates are going to continue with regularity here at Bloody Elbow.
Earlier in the week we talked about the very controversial news that Floyd Mayweather and Robert Guerrero were in deep negotiations to face each other on May 5. This news was met with a lot of pushback from media and fans as Guerrero was seen as talented but too small and not proven enough to move from lightweight to welterweight to challenge the best fighter in the world.
Now Dan Rafael of ESPN has tweeted the following:
That's very interesting news (Schaefer is CEO of Golden Boy) and I don't think it's wrong at all to assume that the amount of ridicule the idea was getting from all corners shut down the idea.
Saul "Canelo" Alvarez may once again be the most likely option and I think that would be a very good fight that is much better than a lot of people realize.
And there is always some outside chance that Mayweather vs. Pacquiao gets done.

I'll be shocked if it's anyone other than Canelo
That fight would make a ton of money and it’s a fight that both guys would gladly sign on for.

The only real sticking point were some reports that Saul was demanding too much money. I wouldn’t put it past Golden Boy to leak a story about being close on the Guerrero fight just to make Alvarez drop his demands a bit.

Yeah I agree with that.
It’s easy to see why Saul would demand a lot of money — has legitimate drawing power and deserves to be compensated accordingly. Plus, he’d be walking into by far the toughest fight of his career. But I imagine they can come up with a number that works for everyone.

Canelo should be asking for a shitload.
Who else is there that could carry a PPV against PBF right now, after the Washington Screwjob…
I would love to see Mayweather lose
no matter who it is.

Manny vs Floyd is the only boxing match I'm remotely interested in
and I’ve given up hope on it happening.
Game as GSP vs Anderson Silva.

You would be bored
Cus it would be a boxing clinic by MAyweather And I take it by your other post relating boxing you don’t find it exciting in the first place
by Mohammedini Hussein on Jan 12, 2012 6:19 AM EST up reply actions
Oh, I wouldn't watch it
Anything less than kickboxing/muay thai and it feels too limited to me.
I’m just very interested in seeing it put together and finding out the outcome…actually watching it doesn’t matter to me.

It’s an interesting matchup to me. Pacquiao would have to be very aggressive to win; with Floyd’s defensive style, combined with his 5" reach advantage, I don’t really see him losing, but it’d be a better fight than any of the recent ones from either man.

this
Canelo is nice, I feel he is better than Ortiz, but I always felt Ortiz didn’t have a prayer. I feel Canelo just isn’t quite on PBF’s level, YET. I do think by the time he is 25 he will be nearly unstoppable.

For those who hate Dana White..........
I present to you, Floyd Money Mayweather. Without a centralized controlling body to dictate fights and rule the sport with an iron hand, this is what you get: one of the most talented fighters (not the most talented, but one of a few) who manages to go an entire career without ever having to fight anyone on his level. He always fights guys past their prime, too small, too early, not qualified, etc. He somehow never actually fights anyone worth fighting, its astonishing.

He always showcases guys past their prime, too small, too early, not qualified, etc. over hard-working, but boring fighters. A guy like Fitch can win 5 in a row and make $45K to show while standandbang guys rake in hundreds of thousands. He somehow never actually tells anybody why he supports SOPA, its astonishing.

Not even in boxing due people get what Floyd gets and pretty much all athletes outside of MMA are GROSSLY overpaid to begin with anyway even if their sports are more culturally set. As for Fitch, he pretty much made his own bed by not even making a conscious effort to finish fights much less be more entertaining and boxing has a history of showcasing guys past their prime and/or unqualified to rake in views.
Make no mistake
Decentralized control of a sport is of more benefit to the fighters, centralized control is of greater benefit to the brand.
UFCs model is a great way to establish the sport and evolve it from infancy, but if in 10 years Dana White is still the face of MMA then this sport will be closer to pro wrestling than a combat sport.

Only a select number of fighters makes what Floyd makes, (namely 2) that’s not indicative of boxing as a whole. The rest of boxing isn’t exactly blowing away the salaries of MMA guys, not to mention boxing has a 100 year head start and mainstream acceptance.

That’s true of any sport, including boxing. Too small, too early, not qualified? You mean like Robert Guerrero? Mayweather himself was “boring” early in his career and nobody cared about him until he started opening his mouth.
I love boxing, but the disorganized, decentralized model is the reason it’s been almost 3 years and the biggest possible fight of this generation hasn’t happened yet.

I agree with most of what you say, and I do think that Floyd gives himself every advantage is his fights, but I have a hard time thinking of more talented boxers, even historically. There may have been better fighters, but there had never been a defensive genius on his level. This coming from someone who despises him.

Willie pep
spelling on the last name maybe wrong. the guy was known to win rounds without throwing a punch was truly a wizard and one of the few who truly defined P4p in a era when they fought alot and often times against other elite

Looked him up, and he is an interesting read.
I should have been more specific and stated “in the modern era”. Based on the evolution of both boxing and the modern athlete it is hard to know how Pep would measure up with most modern boxers. Just with the advancements we have made in sports since the 70’s, its hard to look at anything before that and really compare it. what makes it even harder is the footage that exist of boxers before the modern era isn’t really suitable to measure them with.

I see what your say and
mostly agree. on of the great thing about boxing is i feel like comparing era’s is a lil bit simpler cause "skills pay the bills "
so its no all on the athletic gifts on the individual

Gentlemen
Operation #NoToGuerrero was a great success
As for Floyd Mayweather

Me > Ben Henderson
@KrimsonTVN
Dia2iLL.com is up AND RUNNING!!!
Hope Saul vs. Mayweather happens
so my name can get some publicity. :D
Just kidding, fingers crossed for Pacquiao vs Mayweather.
Canelo is a huge star in Mexico and in the Latino market
Him demanding good money shouldn’t be a problem. They know what he’s worth and this ppv with both these guys will do incredibly big sales. I really hope they make it happen, cause this fight will be better than most think. As Brent mentioned.

Ortiz?
why is My Ortiz II not being discussed t all, amost immediately after the debacle that was the first fight’s finish, the Cinco rematch seemed imminent? Ortiz already booked against another opponent?
hoping for Pac fight obviously, but Alvarez makes a lot of sense if not Pac, Ortiz already booked?
name one second of the first fight where Ortiz was even present??? Ortiz was being hit with overhand rights nonstop, and Floyd was just playing with him. I would love to see mayweather crushed, but Ortiz is not the man to do it. His style lends itself to what mayweather does best. He walks in on a straight line, and attacks predictably. It was getting desperate in the first fight, the second would be no different.

You guys might not know this but This is a classic Arum tactic
Releasing “rumors” every time Floyd is looking to fight PAc to remove the heat on Camp Pac.
IT’s always a low lvl fighter.
OOh Floyd is fighting Mathew Hatton(Ricky’s journeyman brother)
Ooh Floyd is fighting Spadafora(He hadn’t fought for 5 years at the time)
Ohh Floyd is fighting Nate Campbell(he was a bum at that point, 2 weight classes below Floyd)
Ooh Floyd is fighting Erik Morales(for the may date)(Old far-out of-prime Erik)
Ohh Floyd is Fighting Guerrero (a guy who is a LW and hasn’t fought anyone of notice, young guy)
IT’s always a “Reliable” source close to Floyd camp and always right in time whenever Arum and Pac is taking heat.
It always works, the journalist get distracted while Arum concoct a way to shift the Blame to GB and Mayweather

dude
floyd has no more showed he wants this fight then arum has. a couple of bullshit tweets does not mean crap. if he really wanted it he would call Todd arum and arrange a meeting with the right ppl. in fairness Manny and company have shown no want for the fight either. so its right down middle both playing the pr game with money winning this round of bull shit.

Ohh really?
So who came to Pac 2-3 years ago with a fight offer? Who has tried to get negotiations started multiple times?
Floyd gave Pac the choice of ring size, choice of gloves, 1 mil weight penalty for every lbs.
Bob Arum absoluuuutley haaates FLoyd because of FLoyd leaving Top Rank.
Bob use to do this shit to Oscar De La Hoya all the time, blocking him from fighting anyone in his stable.
Bob Arum is the slimiest of the slimiest pieces of sh1t in boxing history.
Even Don King made the fights that the fans wanted even if he fucked his fighters over.
How come Arum comes up with a million excuses for why the fight won’t happen?
Feeding Pac lines to say.
Floyd booked the MGm grand in Las Vegas weeks before the Marquez fight and called Pac out then.
Bob Arum went into Panic mode and made excuses like “Floyd is a racist, It could hurt Pac’s political career”!!!!!!?!!!!!!!!?!!!!!!
He also spread the “rumor” that Floyd is looking to fight Erik Morales all along.
Go to any boxing forum an search and look up an excuse list from Bob Arum.
ITs unbelieveble how the mainstream media has eaten Bob’s bullshit for this long.
Arum is a known compulsive liar, a sociopath.
Ask anyone about Bob.
Btw when was the last time Floyd fought a TR fighter ?
I rest my case

did I ever try go defend arum I said
it my self that his excuses are bull shit. just like floyds are bull shit its a double duck and any one can see it. money has ducked Pac and Pac has ducked floyd and both of them t play the pr game. I hate that grown ass men can’t do it for the fans but saying either one of the teams can do any less then take 50/50. I could prolly come up with a counter to every thing u posted but I don’t wanna come off as a pactard. when in truth I was definitely on pacs side for a good year. but the more these idiots talk the more it becomes painfully clear that there not serious about this and won’t be any time soon
