UFC And Fox Target May 5 For Third Network Show

Photo

Dave Meltzer is reporting that the third UFC on Fox event will take place on May 5. That is the same date that Floyd Mayweather, Jr. has blocked out for his next fight. Despite all the bluster from Floyd on Twitter yesterday there is almost no chance of the fight that date being against Manny Pacquiao. The next best option would be for a bout with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez but the reported negotiations with Robert Guerrero probably mean that's what we're more likely to see.

Regardless, the UFC will probably take the same tactic that they did when they aired the UFC on Fox show against Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez and insist that they'll be off the air in time for the Floyd fight.

If it is Mayweather against Guerrero it's much less important to play that up since it won't do half the number of buys as the standard Floyd or Manny show with "The Ghost" having no name value whatsoever.

No word yet on what the target main event would be for the UFC on Fox 3 card. Cinco de Mayo weekend is traditionally a big fight weekend in boxing where promoters have looked to put on big cards featuring Latino fighters. Given Cain Velasquez's loss on the first Fox fight, I doubt they'd try to use the same tactic with his rumored bout with Antonio Silva.

Update: Bloody Elbow has been able to confirm this news. The target date is May 5.

I think he’s tested positive three times. The first is seldom brought up and I don’t remember the details behind it. It was before UFC 36. Anyone remember the details? I’m having a hard time looking up the exact story; just finding a ton of articles that say he’s tested three times.

Why so stoked already? I’m not saying I’m not excited, but there’s so little information. Perhaps you’re privy to some details that I am not…

If not Cain

Then it must be Gil. Right?

I can’t think of any other big time Mexican MMA fighters in position for a huge fight.

What's gonna headline this?

I’m actually havinga fairly hard time thinking of a good main event apart from maybe the main event winner this weekend versus Hioki.

Well I know what Ill be watchin may 5 , and its not boxing. I dont even care if its the Pac vs Mayweather fight. Ill pick any ufc event over a boxing event anyday.

Cain is rumored to be fighting Bigfoot Silva? Maybe I missed that story.

Lots of main events to fill from March in Montreal through this Fox card. I’m very interested to see what fights they make.

by Hardcharger on Jan 11, 2012 7:23 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Great date!

Maybe the Flyweight finals + BW championship, Faber Cruz 3 with FX doing all the build up through TUF. Tuf starts in March right?

Don’t think TUF will be ready by then, I think it’s supposed to be on 12 weeks (3 months)

How about

Tito Ortiz vs. Forrest Griffin as a co main event on the card, 2 big names that’ll draw the numbers and its enough time for tito to heal up and forrest to train since he’s been on vacation with his family

by spider webb on Jan 11, 2012 7:54 PM EST via mobile reply actions

There is no need to see TIto vs. Forrest III.

And hopefully no one even mentions the absurdity of the 2nd fight even being a split decision.

Personally idc about that fight

Tito mentions he wants one last fight, either Griffin or Liddell, obviously chucks not an option and aparently tito gets what he wants so Griffin it is

by spider webb on Jan 11, 2012 8:11 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Anyway JDS vs. Overeem could be up for this card?

No way they give that fight away for free (as much as we as the fans want it)

They were targeting summer time for a fight, so this is right on the edge

They gave away Cain/JDS for free.

It was also the debut FOX event. What’s so special about UFC on FOX 3?

It's the UFC on FOX?

Well

FOX has a wider audience so therefor the UFC needs to make quality fight cards on them to help attract more fans

wonder where this will be at?

by 209..STOCKTON..209 on Jan 12, 2012 12:28 AM EST reply actions

Not 2 excited about Cain vs Bigfoot. Ya I know they both are coming off 1st rd tko losses n all but it doesn’t seem to appealing. I see it going the same way as Cains stablemate Cormier did against Bgft.Silva. Mir vs Velasquez & Silva vs Cheik Kongo sounds a lot better!

by Hankverdee on Jan 12, 2012 12:29 AM EST via mobile reply actions

They need to develope storylines

Keep fighters from the previous shows mixed with new fighters to promote. Spectacular winners move onto the next UFC on FOX. Dos Santos should fight Reem on tv, but then people would expect every HW Title to be on fox (which i’m ok with since i give no fucks about ppv numbers).

If not that, then every other ufc on fox should have a belt on the line. I want every UFC on FOX to have a belt on the line honestly….

FUCK IT! Make it all free!! I’m broke!

Cain vs Mir

Regardless of anything Cain needs to be on this damn card, that’s a given. Cain, Nate Diaz, and tito in the main slots. Mir, florian, and Forrest as opponents?? Idk, it’s really not easy to call. Melendez vs Penn would be nice but I doubt it.
