So is Dana just being Dana. He claims a live UFC event is the best live sporting event bar none. Better than stick and ball, better than boxing? Debatable, and probably not a debate to have on a MMA enthusiasts website. My question is, within the community, what is the best way to view an UFC event?
I had the opportunity through a friend a few years ago to watch a live event at the Anaheim Pond in Anaheim, California. The company he worked for had an annual box and events that they deemed inappropriate for corporate clients were given to employees (Nine inch Nails, A Perfect Circle, Up in Smoke, UFC ect....). The event was UFC 63: Hughes vs Penn.
I was so stoked. My first live event, in a fully catered box, a bunch of close fight friends, and the return of BJ Penn. Needless to say I was beside myself with joy. Maybe I had over hyped it and maybe box seats really aren't that great for watching live fights so I left the event less than satisfied. The atmosphere was just "OK." Between the drunken swearing simpletons and the Affliction wearing bros I felt quite out of place. Then there's the actual viewing experience. If your not within throwing distance your pretty much (with a stiff neck) watching it on the jumbo-tron with no commentary.
The next option is the bar. Finding one can be a pain depending on where you are. Finding one without a cover is almost impossible. It can be fun, the atmosphere can be electric, the drink deals can be enticing, and not forking out $50 just to watch seals the deal.
Then there's PPV at home. Obviously the best thing to do is invite a bunch of friends, split the cost of the PPV, buy a bunch of beer, and do a pot luck so there's tones to snack on. It's my personal favorite way because I know who I'm sharing the experience with. The back and forth banter with friends who support opposing fighters. The fact you can DVR the show means you start it a little later, stop, pause, rewind, and slow-mo the "OH $HIT" moments. The drinking games alone are worth the price of admission. Every time Goldy shouts "Oh My!", pound that beer. A good time is had by all.
So please vote. Which do think is best? And please if you've had the seats where you can actually hear the fighters breathing and taste their blood please refrain from voting. Firstly because most people cannot afford the decent seats and are relegated to the nose bleed section. And secondly, because I hate you and you suck at life.
