Newcomers Daniel Pineda And Pat Schilling Meet At UFC On FX 1
With less than two weeks to go until the UFC's first FX-televised event, there was still one more fight to be added, and it will feature two UFC newcomers in the featherweight division: Daniel Pineda and Pat Schilling. The UFC tweeted news of the match-up yesterday:
Nashville@FXNetworks card changes: Mike Brown injured; Daniel Pineda vs. Pat Schilling and Mike Easton vs. Jared Papazian added
Schilling trains out of Ambition MMA in Minnesota under head coach Joey Clark, and has relied mainly on his ground game to go undefeated in his first five pro fights, with four of those wins coming via submission. Competing on the Minnesota and Canadian regional scene, Schilling''s competition hasn't exactly been too impressive, with his most recent win coming against an 0-7 fighter.
Pineda is a native of Houston, Texas and trains at the 4oz Fight Club. He'll have a significant experience advantage over Schilling, with 22 fights under his belt, and against tougher competition in larger organizations like Bellator and Legacy Fighting Championship. Pineda has only been to a decision once, although that's probably the result of his reckless style, as Pineda has 6 submission losses to go along with his 9 submission wins. Perhaps the most notable name on Pineda's record is current UFC bantamweight and TUF 14 cast-member, Johnny Bedford, as Pineda and Bedford split a pair of fights in 2009, with each man getting a submission win over the other.
Pat "Thrilling" Schilling (5-0)
W Cody Larson (submission - punches) - Brutaal Fight Night: Brutaal Myth
W Tom Waters (submission kneebar) - W-1 MMA 6
W Dustin Smith (submission - RNC) - Brutaal Fight Night
Daniel "The Pit" Pineda (15-7)
W Gilbert Jimenez (KO - spinning backfist) - Legacy Fighting Championship 9
W Frank Gomez (submission - RNC) - Legacy Fighting Championship 7
W Ray Blodgett (KO - punch) - Legacy Fighting Championship 6

Pineda seems like a good prospect, while Schilling seems like a typical Midwestern prospect. Should be interesting.

Minnesota has plenty of talented prospects
He is not one of them.

I should rephrase..
He’s not one of the better MN prospects to come out in a long time, and he doesn’t come from one of the more prominent camps. He’s cut from the Brett Rogers cloth.

With all due respect ...
Just because a fighter trains at the same facility does not mean they are “cut from the same cloth”. That is a generalization, and as such it is wrong as most generalizations usually are. Pat trains extremely hard and has a work ethic second to none. He is a stand up kid, and a class act. He is humble, always shows respect for his opponents and doesn’t respond to or get involved in any negativity that might be directed at him. I see some think think he “is a huge question mark” and that’s totally understandable… he’s only been fighting for a couple years is relatively unknown, and it is still very early in his fighting career. He is probably getting this opportunity much earlier in his career than many fighters would. I can tell you that Pat will make the most of the opportunity and regardless of the outcome he will have given a good accounting of himself when this fight is over…
With even more respect
Pat is not a stand up kid or a class act. A stand up fighter does not lie about his record. Everyone in Minnesota knows he got knocked out by Bruce Johnson last year. His willingness to go along with te shenanigans of Ambition gym and promoter Nick Gamst to defraud people and keep the fight off of his record shows he has no class. A real class act would accept the loss, but Pat’s people had it removed from the record and Pat walks around telling people he’s undefeated, when that is BS.
seems like Ufc is overworked, no?
anyone else think so? This fight was just added to Ufc on FX which is barely over a week away.
It seems like the Ufc is taking longer and longer to fill cards and grabbing lesser and lesser prospects. Pineda seems solid to me but Schilling is a huge question mark. Who knows maybe he’ll be a Junior Dos Santos type(prospect with no hype who explodes) but I doubt it.

Yeah, I have the same feeling. Maybe it’s just a transitioning period with the new FOX deal, but they sure are taking their sweet ass time booking fights. Also the general quality of the fight cards seems to be going down further, no doubt a result of having 30+ events to fill for the year.

over/under 50 minutes total cage time?
11 fights here, and probably at least 7 finishes with some squash matches. Only a few fights will go to decision like Brenneman/Roberts and Neer/Ludwig

Is it me, or does Pineda bear a striking resemblance to Leonard Garcia?
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.
