Bas Rutten: 'If Cyborg Wants To Clear Her Name, Send The Drink To The Athletic Commission'

Photo

Bas Rutten has a simple advice for Cristiane Santos or 'Cyborg', who has now been suspended and stripped of her title following a failed drug test. Cyborg has since released a statement and blamed a 'dietary supplement' for testing positive for a banned substance, stanozolol.

If it's true, Bas says there's an easy and simple solution to clearing her name:

If Cyborg wants to clear her name, simple, send the drink to the athletic commission, let them test it. I just don't believe they put it in drinks to LOSE weight. If they DO put roids in, show the drink and her name is cleared. Its what I would do. Like I said before, they all say "I took something over the counter". What? Tell us what you took? Help your fellow fighters not to make the same mistake by accident, just saying

Your body doesn't produce this one.

Winstrol isn’t a typical synthetic testosterone, and overall levels are not generally raised in any significant amount. Because it is not a synthetic, it doesn’t affect the T/E ratio much, if at all. What it does (regarding testosterone) is increase the amount of free testosterone by binding with SHBG, thus preventing it from binding with existing testosterone.

Because the T/E ratio is essentially unchanged, that test wouldn’t catch someone using just it, but a test for stanozol metabolites is also typically a part of PED testing.

Bottom line, if she tested positive for stanozol, assuming the test is correct, she took it. Whether it was done knowingly or not is a separate issue.

^^^^^ This

I’ve always wondered this myself. so many athletes claim to get popped from OTC stuff they assumed was clean. if that’s really the case i always felt like they’d do whatever was possible to at least show to the commissions and league heads of their various sports that they took something innocently, or unknowingly consumed a product with a banned substance.

I feel like, as a professional athlete, I would do my hardest to prove my innocence. doubtful it will make them think to remove the ban, but at least make an effort to show your bosses and the sports world that you’re not a cheat and a jucier.

but that’s just me.

I’m sure the story would be that they take so much shit that they can’t be sure which thing they were taking has the steroids in it. That, or there was one pill of steroids in the giant bottle of whatever nonsense they were taking and it’s a miracle that it somehow ended up in the bottle of a professional athlete and then swallowed just before a fight.

Any athlete subject to any sort of testing, unless they are looking for a cover story for publicities sake,,

is a fool to use any supplement not labeled NSF Certified for Sport. They do very thorough testing, and have agreements in place with approved manufacturers regarding production, quality control, samples of all batches being maintained and the like to be as sure as possible that they are what they say they are.

Having said that, the supplement industry is the wild west, even in the US. They are largely unregulated and there have been many instances documented where they either don’t contain what they claim, contain banned substances, or both.

There have been a few documented cases of people who do not naturally have a T/E ratio of 1:1,

but the T/E ratio test is used mainly as an inexpensive, front line test, designed to flag which samples are likely to contain synthetic testosterone for more extensive (and expensive) testing.

Even if his testosterone levels were double the normal high end of the range (i.e. 2000+ ng/dl), unless he were also one of the extremely rare individuals with a far greater than 1:1 natural T/E ratio, it would never show up on any sort of urine PED test (those urine tests show nothing about the actual testosterone levels, no matter how high or low).

Healthy men have way higher than a 1:1 ratio. Around the end of puberty it’s something like 50:1. Even in people with hypogonadism it’s close to 10:1.

by Simen on Jan 10, 2012 12:01 PM EST up reply actions

Perhaps you are mistaking T/E ratio to mean testosterone to estrogen? Testosterone is produced almost exactly 1:1 in almost all healthy men to epitestosterone, which is the ratio used as a front line urine-based PED test (generally a 4:1 or 6:1 threshold is used as the allowable over/under, which is a very flawed testing method, as I once detailed here). The sole purpose of that test is to flag samples likely to contain synthetic testosterone for further testing (it says nothing about the actual testosterone levels).

T/E is also only an indicator

And other tests have to come in. It used to be used by itself, but then it was discovered there are all sorts of variants including among different races.

What even WADA don’t want to admit to, is that PED testing is still very much an approximate science, and not an exact science.

Exactly,

T/E by itself is worthless except as a cheap test to identify those likely using synthetic testosterone, so they can be further tested (usually via GC/MS) to identify the specific compound.

I agree many parts of it are somewhat approximate.

If you want to see how scary the other side can potentially be, take a look into the science and assumptions behind said science the NFL is trying to get the NFLPA to agree to…

I agree with Bas

Have you noticed all these sports people blame something “over the counter” that they knew nothing about? I guess its convenient to do that, but c’mon do they really expect us to believe that? From what I understand, Ms Cyborg was taking something as a weight loss aid, those products usually have stimulant type things in them not hormone related substances (which may in fact, cause weight GAIN)…something doesn’t sound right here don’t you think? Just as a matter of general interest, what they measure in these tests is the testosterone/epi-testosterone ratio which get skewed when a steroid-like substance is used which takes away the argument of just having a “naturally high” level.

not every steroid turns you into the incredible hulk. She tested positive for one that is used by people cutting weigh/looking to put on lean muscle.

by Phildo on Jan 10, 2012 8:52 AM EST up reply actions

Winstrol

is not really a mass increasing steroid. It is used for strength gains in higher doses, and for reducing water retention, fat loss and increased red blood cell counts (all desirable things for a weight-cutting MMA fighter). It is also reputed to be an estrogen blocker, but I am not sure about that part.

More importantly, Winstrol is also one of the only steroids “safe” for female athletes to use because it has none of the androgenic (masculinizing) side effects that the testosterone type steroids have in women (male pattern baldness for example).

All things considered, if she was going to use an AAS, this would likely be the one imo.

Very few supplement companies will do that. These companies pop up with great new packaging make some money and disappear.

Many of them routinely spike batches of their product so that it becomes hot and they can make some good money selling others garbage that is pretty much useless. Keep in mind even protein shakes have strange ingredients in them so i mean can athletes not depend on those as well? Do I think the majority of these guys that get popped are getting popped for legit steroids? Yes. Do I think that no one has a handle on the supplement industry and that its such a large market that until you have a large amount of deaths nothing will change? Yes. Personally she may have willingly used steroids, cycled and actually got caught for the OTC. We don’t know. All professional athletes will look to LEGAL ways to improve on their athleticism. They are by nature competitive and it is their jobs and livelihood.

This is about the least suprising positive test we’ve had thus far IMO, and I don’t have a great deal of sympathy for her. She’s mad her name physically overpowering and beating down overmatched girls. Cyborg relies more on physcal strength than skill, and now there is proof that at least some of that ability is gained through the use of steroids.

I don't buy it

As I mentioned, being a world champion it is absolutely down to her, her manager and coaches to be more vigilant about her supplement intake. The ‘playing dumb’ routine just doesn’t cut it anymore.

And MMA managers considering a deal with Xyience or Musclepharm, or whoever else sponsors fighters, should insist on the liability clause I mentioned. If the companies are above board and don’t lace their products with steroids to make them more effective, there’s nothing to lose in agreeing to the liability clause. If they’re hesitant or don’t want to, alarm bells should start ringing that they’re trying to hide something.

The International Olympic Committee had done a larger scale test a few years prior to that, with similar findings (just under 20% tainted with steroids, including 6 of 9 “testosterone boosters”). USA Today article says about 25% had steroid contamination in that study.

I was unsure if I didn’t like you or if I enjoyed your quirkiness. But after I you ended that thought with “just sayin’”, I now have my answer.

So to quote that alien in the Mos Eisley Cantina “I don’t like you, and my friend, he doesn’t like you either.”

Clearly

You fine folks tolerate “just sayin’” as a suffix much better than I do.

The real issue here is that I'm nor following Bas on twitter.

I apologize to everyone and will rectify this immediately.

In her drink

Get the fuck outta here – it’s pretty obvious she has been juicing for a long time. She really thinks that is believable given how she looks? :-S

Yeah, because that worked for Sherk

Bas is spot on here

Too many fighters refuse to take responsibilty for their actions. Name the supplement, get your name cleared, help other athletes avoid making the same mistake. It’s quite simple really.

Great point by Bas. The problem is when she produces said supplement and it says Winstrol right on the packaging it might not help her case.

This is true

Athletes are responsible for what they put in their bodies, so from the AC point of view intent really doesn’t matter.

History shows that when people are caught cheating they will...

…deny, deny, deny.

I was a Cyborg fan, but no longer. If she admitted what she did instead of this lame supplement story, it would help gradually win me back. There is some upside to being honest.

Victor Conte tweeted about

how there has never been an over the counter dietary supplement found ever to contain stanozolol

Even though Conte is a sleazebag, but hot damn, he knows his shits when it comes to this stuff

1. Bas is hilarious & spot on as usual.
2. There is NO WAY cyborg will actually do that because it is wayyy to simple, and smart, and makes entirely too much sense.
3. IF she did turn it in? She’d be caught lying and that wouldn’t work out in her favor at all.

Over the Counter, Oh yeah

I’m with Bas on this
IF there is an over the counter dietary aide that contians BOVINE STEROIDS
then for Pete’s sake tell everyone which one it is
not just for the sake of fighters but for everyone’s sake
so the right officials can get it off the market or at least off the shelf
Sadly
I don’t believe her story; no dietary aide, no over the counter,
but she may have been told by SOMEONE that is was safe and legal
Gee Whiz, I wonder who is close enough to Cyborg that she will simply take any unknown substance on no more than their word?
It is really sad for she was right on the verge of at least one money-making fight and maybe more IF she could get to 135
(where honestly most of her victims have come from anyway)
