UFC 149 Fight Card Primer: Brian Ebersole Vs. James Head

Brian Ebersole and James Head face off during the UFC 149 weigh-ins at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada on Friday, July, 20, 2012. Esther Lin, MMA Fighting

In a UFC 149: Faber vs. Barao Welterweight fight, Brian Ebersole (50-14-1(1); 4-0 UFC) faces James Head (8-2; 1-1 UFC). This is the second fight on the UFC 149 PPV main card. The USA TODAY / MMA Nation Consensus MMA Rankings have Ebersole as the #19 Welterweight in the world, with Head unranked. The UFC 149 PPV card airs live Saturday night July 21 at 10 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. PT.

Not to sound like a broken record, but this is yet another changed fight. Such is the case with UFC 149: Card Subject To Change. This was originally scheduled as Head vs. Claude Patrick, but Ebersole stepped in for an injured Patrick about 3 weeks ago. He's a bit of a surprising replacement. For one, Ebersole just fought on the FX show less than a month ago. Also, it's a fight that doesn't really gain him much, but could potentially cost him considerably should he lose. Plus, he's talked about moving down to Lightweight immediately after this fight.

How do these two stack up?

Ebersole: 31 years old | 6'0" | 73" reach
Head: 28 years old | 6'2" | 73" reach

What have these two done recently?

Ebersole: W - T.J. Waldburger (UD) | W - Claude Patrick (SD) | W - Dennis Hallman (TKO)
Head: W - Papy Abedi (Sub) | L - Nick Ring (Sub) | W - Gerald Harris (UD)

How did these two get here?

Brian Ebersole came to the UFC last year as a highly (HIGHLY) experienced veteran. With 11 years experience and 60 pro fights prior to his UFC debut, Ebersole is one of the most experienced active fighters out there today. In the UFC, he's been on a real run, going 4-0, with every fight aside from one (UFC 140 against Claude Patrick) being a high energy, excellent fight. A win here moves him up to a perfect 5-0, at which point I feel like a real high profile opponent has to come, though if he does drop down to Lightweight, he may need a fight or two to get accustomed to the weight.

James Head came to the UFC in 2011 as a bit of a surprise. Early in 2011, he fought Gerald Harris outside the UFC in what was expected to be a rebound fight to get Harris back into the Octagon. Instead, Head got the win and stole his spot. He lost his UFC debut against Nick Ring at Middleweight, then dropped down to Welterweight to defeat Papy Abedi in April. Head is still relatively inexperienced, with only 10 fights in his pro career, but he's already faced some notable names. He'll be looking to score the upset and make an impact here.

Why should you care?

One word: Ebersole. Like I said, he brings the excitement to his fights, consistently delivering good action. I'm excited to see how far his late career UFC run takes him.
