About a week ago in some random comments section in the bowels of BE, I found it necessary to explain which champions currently in the UFC I liked more then others and this and that...hoping to finish with a favorite. But I soon figured out that it was something I wouldn't be able to do. Truth be told, I like a lot of different things about each Champion. Anderson Silva the pound for pound king, GSP the OTHER pound for pound king, Jon Jones the young gun who made it to the top faster then anyone(age wise), the brutality of Aldo or Velasquez, the insane style of Cruz. Most of them have something I like.
But just as some fans can't pick a favorite fighter but have a clear cut most hated/least favored fighter, I found one champ to be one I I liked the least. Frankie Edgar, I don't hate him. He has all of the great champion criteria that I like to see. He is on a good win streak, has only one loss that he may soon avenge, has proven to be hard to beat, and has his own sort of style that poses problems for guys. But between his personality and the specifics of his style...I just can't say he is one of my favorites. I find him to be the least compelling of all the champions.
Perhaps it is the fact that the fight where he won the title from Penn was so close that it demanded an immediate rematch. He dominated Penn in the rematch...but it's unfortunate because some would argue that he didn't deserve to win in the first place, in which case the rematch should have never had to happen. Then in his first defense, he immediately gets crushed by Maynard. Granted, he survived, showed a lot of guts, and kept going. He deserves a lot of props for fighting back to a draw...but it still didn't fully win me over. If he had come back to win a clear cut decision I probably would have been fully converted, but the fact that it ended in more or less a stalemate just sort of contributes more to this 'He's not really the champion' aspect of him.
So what about you? Cast your vote and explain why in the comments. Cheers
