UFC 137: Nick Diaz vs. B.J. Penn Official
One day after Dana White stripped former Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz of the opportunity to face Georges St. Pierre for the UFC welterweight title at UFC 137, White has now confirmed that Diaz is back on the card, but he'll now face B.J. Penn:
This is crazy but here we go again! You wanted it so you got it. Penn vs Diaz Oct 27th in Vegas
Penn was originally scheduled to face Carlos Condit, but Diaz's absence from two consecutive press conferences put the UFC in a tough spot. Condit was bumped up to the main event to replace Diaz. Now, Diaz has found his way back onto the card after Dana White mentioned that he was thinking about cutting the fighter. There is no doubt that this is a move to save UFC 137 from monumental failure.
Immediate reactions have been mixed. Many fans are peeved at the notion that White would punish a fighter by removing him from a main event title slot, then turn around and place him on the same card. Others believe Penn vs. Diaz is a dream fight that is much more intriguing. While I understand the former, Nick Diaz vs. BJ Penn is an exciting alternative.

I can see Penn winning by stoppage due to Diaz getting cut. Nick’s paper-thin skin might cost him a fight against BJ

I can also see Penn winning
Due to Diaz getting cut but it will have nothing to do with Diaz’s skin. And it won’t actually count as a win on Penn’s record.

I really do think that the fans do win here in the end
Looking at it as a fan of just watching MMA fights and not caring about the other drama, Penn vs Nick Diaz is just a great scrap. I want to see this fight. Penn deserves to fight a name fighter, and this fight is a very good fight for both Penn and Diaz stylistically. I know that with all of the Nick Diaz drama that some MMA fans will be angry at this move, but I think that in the end, the fans do win here.

Yeah, I can't help but be excited,
but this is just weird in light of the past two days, and probably will continue to encourage Nick to be a selfish jackass henceforth. Anyway, WAR CONDIT!

he got punished
he probably lost ~1.7 million with his little stunt and now has to watch Condit fight for the belt right in front of him- that’s not harsh enough?

I think you're right where punishment is concerned.
Just can’t help feeling like Nick will never change as a result of this. That’s not the UFC’s job though, and as long as they’re not building PPV’s around him, why waste him?

Dana said yesterday...
that if Nick wasn’t in the main event, his behavior wouldn’t be a big deal. There’s not nearly as many media responsibilities for a co-main or regular main card as there is for a GSP title fight/ main. And yeah- can’t take all of that attention garnered yesterday and not use it.

Sure,
it would be foolish to waste Nick, and I can’t complain about this because this card is back to full on awesome, so my interests are satisfied. I just think it doesn’t help get the message through to him at all. He probably feels like everything worked out great, what was all the fuss about? What if Nick beats Penn, can he be given another shot? I don’t see how you could, at least not until he’s had a couple fights and made peace with the UFC over these issues. Is Dana going to give into him and say he doesn’t have to do press, and give him another title shot? Anyway, that’s not our problem:)

I think this is a great decision/punishment
Rather than getting an immediate title shot he now has to overcome one hell of a hurdle in a top 5 WW. If he can’t get through Penn he’ll become just another potential contender in the 170 pound sharktank. If he gets through Penn he justifies his title shot, and learns a valuable lesson not to mess around with DFW.
Plus this should be a god damn war!

I wouldn't say BJ is a top 5 welterweight
highest i have him is at number 6 after gsp fitch shields condit ellenberger besides i think a true test for Diaz would be a good wrestler i mean even Hughes would do as a good test for him to see whether or not he can actually handle a wrestler. Shoot give him Charlie Brenneman and make him work his way up

Diaz has pretty mediocre wrestling
Did you see what BJ did to Jon Fitch in their fight? Even if you argue that BJ isn’t the superior all-around striker (he is, but that’s beside the point), he still has a variety of other tools to allow him to decisively control the fight.
The idea of Diaz submitting BJ is a bit laughable, and I don’t see him having the tools to win a decision even against an out-of-shape Penn. So really his only viable avenue of attack in this fight is to hope he can keep it standing and land big enough power shots to stop BJ.
Considering BJ’s granite chin and phenomenal grappling acumen, I just don’t see Diaz being realistically able to accomplish either of those things.
"Anderson Silva is the best fighter in MMA today. If you don't enjoy watching him fight, you have no heart." - Fraser Coffeen
Diaz has dropped or staggered a lot of guys with impressive chins. Those punches do add up and if BJ just eats them, he’ll fall too.

Those were pretty different stylistic match-ups
I don’t really see Nick hugging BJ’s legs for most of the fight before getting head kicked
Head conductor of the Charles Oliveira hype train.
I'd say that..
Paul Daley probably hits harder than BJ – by how much I’m not sure but I think if Diaz was able to take those shots from Daley, he has a chance against BJ.
Either way, I’m just glad that this card, despite the debacle, is literally still as interesting as it originally was!
I'd further say that
Paul Daley probably hits harder than any top-25 WW and, while Diaz survived getting dropped twice, BJ has a killer instinct to rival that of anyone in MMA – if he drops Nick, he swarms and forces the finish before Nick can recover. And unlike Daley, BJ will have no fear of going to the ground with Nick, although perhaps he should – I don’t think his BJJ = his BJJ rep these days…

Yeah after both times Daley dropped Diaz his follow-up on the ground was ineffectual. That may have cost him the fight. At the same time Nick does a great job avoiding damage after winding up on his back, which should help him.
"He's like Elvis in Korea! They love him there." - Mike Goldberg on Denis Kang
I think BJ's BJJ is just mis stated
He’s never been a huge threat from the bottom. But his guard is half impossible to pass and he’s one of the hardest guys in the UFC to get and hold down. On top of that, it’s his top game that’s really threatening and both times Diaz got knocked down he went straight to turtle. And I just don’t think giving up your back to Penn is a good idea

Tough to say...
I think BJ has the faster and heavier hands, better wrestling, nearly invulnerable skin and at least an equal if not superior chin, but he is a world class front runner.
Diaz is slower and sloppier, but has a nearly equal chin, great recovery when rocked, vastly superior cardio and the ability to goad opponents into mistakes and (an unpopular opinion I’ll grant) superior BJJ for MMA.
Can’t see Diaz KOing or TKOing BJ in a 3 rounder, but I can see him decisioning him or submitting him late once BJ is tired. Of course, I can also see BJ decisioning Nick or KOing/TKOing him…

He didn’t fought any good submission specialist lately though. He fought mainly strikers (and one wrestler in Sakurai).
Penn on the other hand fights mainly grapplers and he always looks good on the ground.

Penn
Has the wrestling to get Diaz down. What he’ll be able to do there, I’m not sure. But Diaz has a very aggressive guard which could provide passing opportunities for an experienced grappler like Penn, if he can keep Nick from scrambling out.

Diaz's chin is good,
but what really sets him apart is his unreal recovery time.
The difference to me being a great chin = not getting rocked when hit with big shots (think Mark Hunt back in the day). Great recovery = looking totally fine after being on queer street just a few seconds earlier.
While I agree,
if BJ rocks him, I think he swarms and forces a stoppage before Nick has time to recover (or show the ref he has recovered).

You initially stated Diaz couldn’t handle the attention of being a main event, and he’ll be getting less media in the co-main event, implying that this will be better for him.
Yet, how will he possibly get less media attention, while still being the comain event, after this complete fiasco? In short, how does this really change anything?

I didn't mean handle in terms of anxiety...
I meant it in terms of responsibility, and the fact is he has less responsibility by fighting BJ instead of GSP. He can turn down interviews now- can’t do that when your being counted on to have a role in the overall success of the card.

The UFC fucked up big time by even considering that Nick Diaz was game to follow his obligations...
but to go on and cast it as an injustice against him would be nuts. Nick is not a reliable individual and, honestly, if it were up to me, I’d force the guy to either review his contract or get unceremoniously fired.

Agree. It’s a great fight but I don’t see the logic. Take him out of the main event and have him co-main on the same card? If his offense was only bad enough to warrant a step down from main to co-main then why punish him in the first place? People still want to see GSP vs Diaz so this decision is really odd.

Great fight...No idea who wins this....
both have great boxing and BJJ
A better fight
Penn vs Diaz is a better fight than GSP vs Diaz or Penn vs Condit. Great fight! On paper, Diaz is the same type of fighter BJ is minus the wrestling ability and takedown defense. If BJ fights smart, BJ Penn all the way.
These sound arguments and relevant prognostications are getting in the way of my trolling......
This is perfect
Diaz fucked up, and he lost out on a reported $2 million payday, but he still gets to ply his trade, watch Condit steal his opportunity from the front row, and give us an awesome fight. I think that the UFC handled this perfectly- pulling him off the main but keeping him on the card is a perfect punishment.

"Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong." - 1 Corinthians 16:13
How on earth...
did he get from Strikeforce-salary to losing 2 million dollars (if he lost those, it means he would’ve earned 2 mil + whatever he gets for fighting BJ)? I find it hard to believe that his title-fight against GSP payed that big. Is this really likely to be true?
"A belt only covers two inches of your ****and the rest you need to back up on your own." Royce Gracie (allegedly...I just read it somewhere and thought it was cool for my sig!)
The report I read...
said he was to net $1m (which is probably 500 and 500) and get $2/ppv….so that’s $2.6m if the PPV were to get 800k buys.
So, he’s probably going to lose out on $1m to $2m. Then again I could use the logic some people were using yesterday regarding the presser debacle and just say “if you don’t have a copy of the contract in hand you can’t prove that figure is true”… :)
No sir, I don't like it.
Not to mention that Diaz really has to EARN a title shot now.
Unless he beats up on BJ, he isn’t going to be right back in the mix.
That won’t be a simple task, and if Dana is still mad afterwards, maybe we see Diaz vs Fitch.
I agree. Great fight, terrible decision.
There is zero chance of this being a boring fight. However, if they were worried Diaz would be a no show for the GSP fight, why wouldn’t he do the same against Penn? Horseshit.
Nevertheless, I see Penn winning this by TKO. Diaz’ terminator routine just won’t cut it against another WW with heavy hands. However, Diaz’ gas tank and durability will give Penn something to think about.
Hit straight, hit hard, lift heavy.
I feel being stripped of a title shot is punishment enough. Diaz is likely losing money both directly and indirectly because of this.
But i thought these guys trained together?
"Who are you and how the hell did you get in here?"
"I'm a locksmith... and i'm a locksmith."
Penn trains in Cali every once in awhile
but a) it’s not a consistent day-in-day-out thing and b) I really don’t think Penn or Diaz are the type to care. Diaz wouldn’t fight a close friend like Jake, for instance, but a dude who passed through once or twice? Unlikely that it fazes him one bit.

I was about to mention how hard this fight would be to pick
On one side, you have BJ’s great striking that just beats Diaz’s, and his superior wrestling
On the other, you know Diaz will be there to fight (if he is there) and can go for a really long time even in a war.
I’ve got to give it to BJ, but it’s tight.
Anderson Silva is, and forever will be the greatest of all time.

What's the point in regard to the title?
The point of bringing in Diaz was to have a fresh body for GSP to fight.
If Diaz beats BJ it would most likely be for the #1 Contender and were back where we started with Diaz in a main event title fight with GSP and the nonsense that comes with it.
If it’s just meant to be a fun fight then great, but I think this might eliminate one contender while producing one who already passed on the opportunity.

Anderson Silva is fucking people up, what makes you think an undersized middleweight would be any different?
The Internets: Where there are no girls and men become children.
That’s the point. I don’t think Georges wants any part of Anderson, and it’s understandable. The more opponents he has in the WW division the longer it pushes off the Silva/GSP fight, and Silva is not getting any younger. I think this chain of events essentially ends any chance of GSP fighting Anderson, if there ever was one to begin with.

I just don't see why GSP would want any part of Anderson more than he would want any part of, say, Shogun or Machida.

It's pure hype. We have zero reason to assume that fight could even be competitive.
Just b/c the two guys have straps does not mean that is a good fight to make. their body types are just too different at this point.
If Anderson can make 170, then fine, but if not, why force it?
Okami is stronger than GSP and more grappler minded and he could not take Anderson down, not with his judo and not with his wrestling. GSP is smaIler, weaker but with a better shot, but that’s it. he’s not a better striker and he’s got no better reflexes.
I don’t care about the fight. Period.
The Internets: Where there are no girls and men become children.
GSP has a fair enough chance in that
And another thing I’ve noticed with him that I’d think Silva would have some trouble with is his timing is very hard to get down. He mixes range strikes with takedowns and occasional close-up strikes. Anderson does great against one dimensional opponents, and GSP offers a lot of threats Anderson’s last few opponents as of late have not. We know that Anderson relies on timing a lot and I just don’t think he could get GSP’s down before GSP starts his own offense.
Anderson Silva is, and forever will be the greatest of all time.
Where can I buy my Cerrone cowboy hat?
For GSP to be aggresive he would have to get *in* to throw his own strikes.
Either that or take the guy whom Okami, a big and strong middleweight who trains with the likes of Sonnen, couldn’t take down.
Now, assuming he takes him down; then what? Will he pound him out, sub him out? has GSP given us reason to assume he will do that? No, he hasn’t. What follows, then?
What follows is GSP getting trounced, or GSP Fitching Anderson for 5 rounds.
Yay… :(

by Unabomberman on Sep 8, 2011 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions
No, he hasn’t. What follows, then?
Yes he has. I swear to god, MMA fans have the memory and attention span of a gold fish.
Also, GSP is a tremendous striker. Not as gifted as Silva in that area of course, but still elite. If Sonnen can out strike Silva due to the looming threat of his wrestling, i don’t see why GSP couldn’t give him problems to a greater extent with the same wrestling threat but also with much faster, more varied, and much more skilled striking.
"Who are you and how the hell did you get in here?"
"I'm a locksmith... and i'm a locksmith."
I agree
And I would argue that GSP’s MMA Wrestling is significantly better than Sonnen’s in everything except arguably the clinch game. Sonnen, who was 207 in the cage iirc is bigger and more reckless than GSP, but that’s about it.

by Our Bovine Public on Sep 9, 2011 6:52 AM EDT up reply actions
You may be right about Silva v GSP
but Okami’s TDs do NOT = GSP’s TDs.
GSP is the superior wrestler and grappler. (GSP’s striking is also better than Okami’s, but I assume you meant his striking was worse than Anderson’s).
Are you serious?
With type of strength training GSP does I suspect his functional strength would be at least the equal of Okami’s, not that it matters. GSP is far quicker, faster, more athletic and with vastly better takedowns and far better striking overall.
He and Anderson would be about the same weight in the cage, although Anderson would of course have a significant height advantage.
GSP would take Anderson down pretty consistently, as would any elite MMA Wrestler, of which Okami is not close to being.

I don’t think GSP is worried with Silva as much as all the other guys in the division he would have to face and stands a good chance of losing to.
GSP matches up very well with Silva, but against guys like Sonnen, Maia, Munoz, and Okami, he would struggle badly and tarnish his career and be forced to move back down. Jumping around in wieght could forever change his ability as a fighter

Yes. This all works out fine and dandy and should be fun but I was sold on Diaz v GSP. I was looking forward to that match. I think this is a good way for them to show Georges respect but I still think pulling him from the title fight for missing a press conference was an overreaction.
alright- you're still wrong.
He got a punishment, and oen that to me was perfectly commensurate with the crime. I’m actually really impressed with the way the UFC handled this. They could have gotten bitter and pulled Diaz from the card, made him jump through some hoops to get another fight, but they just took him away from the opportunity that he wasn’t ready for and still gave him an opportunity to complete his camp and showcase his skills.

I’m not wrong, neither are you, it’s an opinion. They could have gotten bitter, booted him all together and they would have wound up with a crap show that was supposed to be a big seller. Now they get to benefit from all of Diaz’s crazy that makes him sell, pay him less, and get their hot selling show. I will always stand by the fact that the UFC is consistently smart in what they do, whether it is right or wrong.

I think what happened was...
UFC has had a down year on PPV, outside of Brock, GSP is their golden boy and they freaked at the chance Nick was going to no show the medicals or spook some of the public into thinking the fight wasn’t going to happen. The second they had a reason to dump him out of the main event and put a guy like Condit in they jumped at the chance.

"Monumental failure"
Really? Do you even read what you type? How in any way, shape, or form could a card with GSP slotted at the top be a monumental failure? UFC 124 had a co-main event of Stefan Struve vs. Sean McCorkle and still did an impressive 785k buys. While I’m happy BJ vs. Diaz is on, this card would have done just fine with or without Nick Diaz. Ridiculous statement.
by Alpha & Omega on Sep 8, 2011 8:43 PM EDT reply actions 6 recs
UFC was hoping for epic buys for this card. No Diaz hurts that number big time. It would have been a failure without something else at this point. Meltzer was even saying that they were panicking. Here’s their answer.

I think that's overstating it a bit.
Plus, when Dana said “you guys would think I’m nuts” if he revealed who he was trying to get for Penn, I took it as he was referring to Diaz. I don’t think that this was a last minute panic move at all. And Meltzer’s been wrong tons of times.

It wouldn’t surprise me if GSP had a big hand in this flip flop. Not to duck Nick at all but he probably was in Dana’s ear the second Nick didn’t show up saying:
“Dis is bullsheet. Dis guy was not eeven in da UFC and he gets a title shot. I have to stop doing my gymnastiques and go on a press door and dis guy, who talks a lot bout mee for years doesn’t even show up? Dis not right, geeve da fight to Conduit, he deserves eet more. Let Neek fight BJ. Show me da reespect Dana!”
And Dana was probably going out of his mind listening to this on the UFC plane from Toronto to Vegas and said “Ok, fuck eet, I’ll do eet! Alright, Georges?”

loved the first 500 pages, but I thought that it lost it’s focus and started stalling for the last 400. How do you end the book with no resolution in Mereen? How do you have 5 chapters of Stannis being stuck in a blizzard? Why would Snow stay at the wall as a new recruit when his family was going to war, yet leave the Wall as Lord Commander after he created the most volatile environment possible? That’s just the tip of the iceberg of what I didn’t like about it- whereas he created an incredible environment in the beginning in which no one was safe, no everyone is safe! I’m so invested and in it for the long haul, but I think he really fucked it up. Let’s see where the next one goes…

Odd.
I started loving it by the end ’cause all the pieces seemed to finally be aligning hardcore.
Daenerys seems poised to get a true earth stomping Khalasar, Davos sets sail to get the Luigi of the Stark Bros, Jon Snows seems poised to be the Prince that was Promised (read between the lines: you get smoke, salt, and a bloodied star in that scene), jaime sets off to meet Lady Cuntfucker, and Sam is in the Citadel poised to learn some big shit, Sansa is gonna start playing the Game of Thrones herself it seems, and Arya is doing her training montages somewhere in shittown, and Bran is finally learning how to kick some ass (remember when JRR got asked whether you could warg into a dragon and he just said “No comment”?), and Tyrion is gonna plot some nice shit.
All in all I’m fine with how the story is going.

I like where it's going...
but the plot development is really glacial. Now GRRM is doubting that he can get it wrapped up in 7, I dunno- it certainly wasn’t a chore for me to get through (like Crows was at times), but it just doesn’t get anywhere quick enough. Too many pointless diversions and side adventures in which nothing happens, the exhastive descriptions of food and clothes- he’s writing as a celebrity, not as the hungry dude he started as, and I can tell the difference.
Take the way he handled Griff and Rhaegar- they got their army, hired ships and made it to Westeros in 3 chapters. Dany has been unable to do this in 4 books. He needs more movement like that, and less wandering in the woods.

Dude, JRRM has single handedly developed what I like to call The Fantasy/Slice-of-Life genre.
When I told my brother that he just said “Fuck that. I’m waiting.”
The overall thing as I see it, is that Dany isn’t supposed to go to Westeros as a conqueror as she originally wanted to go, but as a liberator of sorts, which sets her up perfectly to fucking fail in the end—just look the kind of fate everyone’s gotten so far.
And in the end, I don’t think he is writing as a celebrity. He is writing as a geriatric dude who has a million things going on in his life other than writing.
Dude is fucking old and shuffling a million different projects.

Diaz should’ve gotten one fight in the UFC to justify a shitle tot.
Then again, Condit is slightly above Dan Hardy as far as earning a legitimate title shot so…..

This just means that Condit will be the one who gets taken down repeatedly and not not finished for five rounds, and Diaz-Penn should be an action packed fight no matter where the fight goes. It will be interesting to see how Nick’s boxing and ground game stack up against B.J’s. And I’m glad to see two Jackson guys having to fight one another, hopefully it won’t be the last time.
It's called Fitching. And yes, Condit is very susceptible to it.

Only if Condit wins.
It will be hard to spin a 3rd match unless he does something drastic. Maybe start training with the Marinoviches again.
All bullshit aside, Nick Diaz vs. BJ Penn is a sick fight. Diaz might get beaten to the punch, and if there’s ever been a fight that I could predict to end via cut, it’s this one thanks to Diaz’s face meeting BJ’s jab, but Diaz will bring it. Should these two end up on the ground, it’ll be a treat to watch as well.
Now, on to the bullshit. I never thought that one day a main event would be scrapped with one fighter getting pulled for negative reasons, then have him back on the card replacing the guy who replaced him the next day. That’s ridiculous.
How does Dana White explain this? Diaz missed two press conferences and bullshitted him, and he’s stripped of a title fight? That’s it? That’s just as detrimental to the UFC as it is Diaz, they had already put effort into promoting the GSP/Diaz match up.
It’s all weird, but I’m glad Diaz is still fighting.

Diaz having a much, much better standup that Diego kinda makes me think it won't be the case.
But Nick’s weird custom of going right in and reciving punishment when in range may be of no help, either. We’ll see.
The Internets: Where there are no girls and men become children.
Penn has very good boxing with lots of power and he does a better job at mixing up strikes than Diaz. As you pointed out, Diaz is alway willing to sacrifice defense to land his own shot, which could get him busted up bad against Penn. Both men have iron chins, but Diaz’ paper thin skin could get the fight stopped.
"Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong." - 1 Corinthians 16:13
Diaz's chin isn't exactly indestructible
it’s more that he’s really good at recovering. Diaz get’s dropped in most of his fights but he recovers well.
That’s a good point. Let’s not forget either that Penn’s killer instinct when he has someone hurt is among the best in the sport. Diaz might not get a chance to recover.
"Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong." - 1 Corinthians 16:13
Yup
thats how I think it’s going to go down. Diaz likes to keep going forward too and BJ normally takes out people who try to do that to him.
let's also not forget...
that Diaz has a HUGE cardio advantage.

It's going to be like the Fitch fight
if BJ is going to lose, it’s going to be in the third round.
Do you think he was really motivated to train cardio for the Fitch fight?
This fight seems like one he can get his heart into, and come in as LW beast BJ
Anderson Silva is, and forever will be the greatest of all time.
Where can I buy my Cerrone cowboy hat?
yeah but BJ’s cardio won’t be as much of a problem against a guy who he doesn’t have to worry about grappling with or trying to put their weight on him and tire him out.
BJ has only had trouble against bigger stronger wrestlers. Diaz won’t have that advantage. If this fight stays standing up, which it most likely will, then BJ should be fine.

Not really
Boxing at a way faster pace than you’re used to is extremely exhausting.
"I'm ready for fight. If I'm win, no win. I don't know. But, I'm ready for fight. This is my working[shrugs shoulders]" - Anderson Silva
But BJ has never gassed in a fight that wasn’t grapple-heavy.
"He's like Elvis in Korea! They love him there." - Mike Goldberg on Denis Kang
He's never had a stand up fight
at nearly the pace Nick will bring.
For the most part, he dictates the pace. Frankie didn’t let him. neither did Georges.
"I'm ready for fight. If I'm win, no win. I don't know. But, I'm ready for fight. This is my working[shrugs shoulders]" - Anderson Silva
I’m inclined to agree that Diaz has a good shot at winning by dictating the pace of the striking and gradually wearing Penn down. However BJ still looked pretty fresh for the first three rounds of either Frankie fight, so Nick will have to really bring it (but we know he will).
"He's like Elvis in Korea! They love him there." - Mike Goldberg on Denis Kang
I don’t feel that will be a factor. BJ will beat Nick to the punch and pick him apart. That’ll slow Nick down enough.
"Who are you and how the hell did you get in here?"
"I'm a locksmith... and i'm a locksmith."
That's not how either guy fights
BJ is comfortable standing in the pocket and the much taller, longer Diaz walks you down constantly.
Not only that, if Diaz throws 10 times more punches(which is entirely possible) BJ has to react and fight at his pace.
"I'm ready for fight. If I'm win, no win. I don't know. But, I'm ready for fight. This is my working[shrugs shoulders]" - Anderson Silva
10 times more punches...
is a gross exaggeration.

What’s the reach difference between the two?
I think the cardio difference will be the telling factor. This is a 5 rounder isn’t it as a co-main event?
It's 3 rounds
only main events get 5 rounders. So the cardio advantage won’t be as significant.
What that gif doesn't show

Diego was badly hurt in the first minute of that fight and never recovered.

I agree, he was. Definitely. But, that is something you have to work on constantly and BJ’s training over these years began to mimic a certain Russian’s who used to have such a beautiful ground game.
The difference between BJ and Fedor is
BJ has preferred boxing ever since he started mma. Fedor on the other hand used his ground game more.
good analogy
they also both have mountains of natural talent, and it can be difficult to progress when you start out at such a high level.

Marinovich worked BJ’s ass off and it had great results. I feel strongly that there are a couple of guys in MMA (Fedor, Brock, BJ) who would benefit so much by going to spend a cmap with one of the top teams. I can’t wait to see what Bigfoot Silva’s striking looks like Saturday night after a few weeks sparring with JDS. Those are the guys that are winning these days, because they are working on multiple disciplines with some of the best.
See, I just don't see it,
Fedor yes. Brock spends time with some of the best trainers and HW sparring partners available in the world. I don’t think a “camp” is the magic formula that will help him. After all, Greg Nelson, Comprido, Peter Welich Erik Paulson—to name just a few—are about as good as it gets.
And while BJ suffers from motivational problems, and could probably use the stability of a camp, he does sparsat least with a whole bunch of very good fighters, and mixes up who comes into his camp very well.
Fedor, on the other hand works, consistently hard, but hasn’t evolved or brought in new people/partners.
Fedor never had much natural talent the way BJ does. His own trainer said so.
It’s all just hard work, in a way. But sadly the times have caught up with him.
Either way, Fedor was awesome during his era when he was the man.

Hey, I'm just going by what his trainer said.
You’ve seen how his standup has eroded. Against Hendo he looked like a wild animal while against Nog-a better striker than Hendo-he looked collected and on point, and always sure to keep the distance where it suited him. His talent or reflexes didn’t fail him so much as his overall work ethic did.
I’d say that Fedor was built on monster hard work while BJ was built on mountains of raw talent.
The Internets: Where there are no girls and men become children.

Yeah, I agree
Fedor’s problem= a combination of aging and not learning and evolving with the times.
BJ’s problem = an aversion to hard grind-it-out work.
BJ trains w/ plently of different elite BJJ black belts,
including Leonardo Santos, Tony DeSouza, Nick Diaz himself, and many others.
I don’t think his BJJ has suffered all that much. All his recent BJJ “failures” are due to him (a) gassing against bigger opponents and (b) the fact that his guard game never translated that well to begin with (this happens to lots of top BJJ guys).
Look to the Florian fight for an example of how well he used his BJJ.

You mean like it was aganist Fitch?
I’m a huge BJ fan- but his MMA BJJ has been greatly overrated (or maybe just underused) in the past 5 years.

I'd say underused
Nobody has finished Fitch ever in the UFC. The only time Fitch has ever been finished was at 205 against Gouveia I think.
op referred to BJ's top control as a "death sentence"
that’s what I was referring to. And finishing or no- he couldn’t stay on Fitch’s back without getting reversed.

I think that had more to do with
BJ fighting at WW instead of LW. Fitch is(was?) a pretty large WW too so that helps powering out of the position.
I don't disagree with any of that
but a death sentence is a death sentence.

Yeah I know
death sentence is not the best way to explain it. Especially since most of the time BJ has gotten top position was because he dropped the other guy when they were standing.
I think that's more of a credit to Fitch
Has anyone else ever escaped BJ’s back mount?

Still can’t figure out why anyone would want Diaz “punished” more severely. Every time he steps in the cage you’re likely to see a memorable fight. Wanting him cut or suspended is only wanting to reduce your own enjoyment. I love watching him fight. I hope BJ brings it and it’s a war. Good for UFC for not going overboard. This card is going to be sweet.

I might be crazy
but I think Penn will finish him. Diaz has a great chin and striking, amazing BJJ but Penn will walk through his strikes, or slip in and catch him good and drop him. He’s been dropped multiple times in fights, I think Penn does the same except finishes it.
He won’t be ko’d completely, and he’ll probably complain to the ref after, but I think Penn drops him and swarms and the ref stops the fight.
Penn almost always finishes when he has somebody hurt
and Diaz get’s rocked at some point in almost all of his fights. Diaz won’t be getting any subs off his back either.
I highly doubt this fight takes place on the mat
Both guys love to swing it out for explicable reason.

Word, BJ hits hard but we’re not talking about just any chin. Penn will come out trying to knock Nick’s block off, and if he can avoid taking too much damage early I see him outlasting and outworking Penn.
"He's like Elvis in Korea! They love him there." - Mike Goldberg on Denis Kang
This is assuming that they're only going to box.
The formula to beat Diaz is already there- get inside on him early and hit him with big shots, take him down, and work from the top until he inevitably creates a crazy scramble and gets up. Rinse/ lather/ repeat.
Nick has improved since his days in the UFC, but that has always been the formula to beat him. GSP would’ve done it better, but Penn can do it too. Sanchez was the best example of a guy fully implementing this gameplan on Diaz, but other fighters were able to replicate success in certain areas before and after him [Jackson knocked Diaz out early in his career with this game; Riggs, Noons (and Sherk to an extent) beat him by constantly landing thudding shots in the pocket; Zaromskis, Cyborg, and Daley all dropped Nick with HARD shots].

by ElliotMatheny on Sep 9, 2011 2:42 AM EDT up reply actions
I certainly can’t argue with that gameplan or Penn’s ability to implement it, but there’s still a very large chance that he just won’t. Judging by the Fitch fight, he’s had the option to take down a lot of his opponents, but he doesn’t always do it. The first Edgar fight is a prime example.
Though I think Diaz winning the stand-up battle does rely on his ability to take big shots and recover (never the safest strategy). He has to hang in there long enough to wear Penn down with body shots, and use his size and cardio to make up for any technical shortcomings. I think he can do it.
"He's like Elvis in Korea! They love him there." - Mike Goldberg on Denis Kang
I don't see
the stand up being one sided for Penn. While BJ might be quicker, Diaz has reach advantage and style advantage boxing.
I can’t see Penn implementing the big punches/take down control gameplan on Diaz. At least not successfully. It’s just not BJ’s style of fighting (grinding out a decision? when was the last time Penn did that?) as it requires a lot more cardio and a lot less killer instinct.
If Penn wins, it will be by KO early, but I still think Diaz will make this a great fight, and his accumulative style of damage plays horribly against Penn’s cardio and heart. I’m excited to see Nick mean mugging BJ at the outset of round 3.
by Armleglegarm Head on Sep 9, 2011 3:25 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, it just isn’t BJ’s style I say regardless of if he could do it or not. He’ll want to be the only guy to KO Nick in this lifetime, and that’ll give him tunnel vision.
Diaz’s style of boxing is definitely more unusual and unorthodox which could help or hinder. BJ may have crisper punches and tighter defense, but Nick’s crazy pressure style throws people off (and questionable cardio doesn’t help).
But I totally disagree with saying Penn will only win by KO early. If Diaz makes a mistake at any point in that fight, he’ll be knocked out or submitted. We’re talking about BJ Penn here, man. I think he could also win a decision, but I trust Nick will be able to outhustle him in rounds 2 and 3.
"He's like Elvis in Korea! They love him there." - Mike Goldberg on Denis Kang
I think you're shortchanging Bj's fight IQ.
BJ likes to throw the hands, but that second loss to Edgar has made him into a smarter fighter. He showed real discipline in that fight with Fitch.
BJ has the perfect style to beat a swarmer/ inverted guard player like Diaz. He will step in with crisp power shots, wrassle Nick to the ground, and apply constant pressure on the ground, which will stifle Diaz’ ability to submit, sweep, and scramble.

without getting tired as hell in the process?
You gotta remember Nick be walking backwards or dancing around BJ. Its killed or be killed in the stand up.
I can’t imagine BJ walking away from that challenge. If he does, there’s a new #2 WW in town.

How do you see Diaz winning?
I just can’t see him edging out BJ on the ground or on the feet. His only advantage is his cardio.
I see Diaz getting dropped, just like in all his fights, except this time he won’t be able to recover in time.
If I was to make a prediction, I’d say it stays on the feet for the majority of the fight and stays pretty even until the last round. I see Diaz baiting a winded Penn and either knocking him out or beating him down for a convincing decision.
by LeDuc on Sep 8, 2011 9:51 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I can see it staying on the feet
but I don’t see Diaz lasting 3 rounds. BJ has only gassed against fighters who tried to grind him out and Edgar.
Plus Diaz’s style of do nothing but move forward is very open to getting countered.

Weird business decision
Short term it makes a ton of sense. But long term, wtf? I am presuming the winner will be the #1 contender. So if Diaz wins you are in the same situation as what led to this mess. If BJ wins you are going to give him another shot at GSP?! I mean Tito-Shamrock was a trilogy so ok I guess…
As far as the fight itself, I wouldn’t sleep on Diaz. All his recent fights in which he was “outclassed” on his feet (KJ Noons, Paul Daley) he’s gotten the better of the standup.
That being said I think BJ’s stand up style is the answer to Diaz. Diaz has a way of throwing long, slow, looping punches. He gets away with it due to his iron chin and sheer volume. But BJ has very strong technical boxing. He sets up combos with the jab, and his punches come quick, tight, and crisp. I think this is the perfect counter to Diaz’s style, so I see BJ picking him apart on the feet en route to a decision win.
I don't think the matchmaking working this way anymore
Contendership is only one factor. They also seem to want to make fights that “make sense.” Fitch doesn’t get GSP because he’s not viewed as an exciting fighter. Okami had to wait A LONG time to get Silva even though he was the #2 guy in the division for ages.
I just don’t know if there is an appetite for GSP/Penn THREE. There’s no rubber involved. The only angle that can be played is the GSP = cheater, and frankly, I don’t think anyone credible believes GSP cheated.
I think this match will pretty much show us who Diaz is. I suspect he’s hollow. His ten victories were against mid-tier guys (Shamrock was not in his prime and KJ Noons is hardly marquee).

This is a win win for the UFC
First, I believe the UFC brass have to be a little nervous that Diaz might win and become the champion. This would be a pr nightmare. No matter how boring GSP’s style might be, he is still one of their greatest draws, as well as a marketing machine.
They still get the best of both worlds. I don’t believe that this ppv suffers at all, and they still might get the possibility of promoting a Diaz/GSP fight.
The original match-ups seemed to have an air of respect for their opponents, so any trash-talk would seem contrived. Penn-Diaz will be full of prefight fireworks, as well as be one great striking matchup. And not to mention its been one of the “dreamfights” on my list.

Condut was the harder fight, I think. There is a lot of good things to say about Diaz, but his 10 fight streak is fluffy.
I am really annoyed at Diaz and I want to see Penn be the avenger here. I want to see him walk away from Diaz’s limp body on the canvas and make the “your DONE” gesture like he did with Sanchez.
Then I want to see Diaz/Sanchez II!

Things have worked out even better than when they started. We still have 2 amazing fights and Condit has a much better chance at beating GSP than Diaz would have, in my opinion.
^that
Agree…Carlos has that crazy scrambling ability, which he’s going to need. Also he has a much more diverse stand-up attack, whereas Diaz is really only a boxer — a good one, but I think you need unpredictability to have a chance against GSP. Carlos is more unpredictable.
I like the fight, just not the circumstances
This is a great fight.
I’m not a fan of “demoting” a guy within the same card, but stranger things have happened. If Diaz wins against BJ then he legitimizes his title shot (but they can’t do a Champ vs. Champ marketing ploy). If he loses there are still a lot of top WWs they can put him in with. BJ gets what BJ wants — big name fight, big pay day, non-wrestler.
Actually, maybe this really is for the best…guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
IMO dana white had this planned from the start
and probably told Diaz to not show. Look how much buzz has been created.
Diaz via stoppage
Penn is outmatched.. Diaz is just too big and too good on the feet
I called this fight while reading updates of the presser.. thinking to myself any minute they are going to announce Penn/Diaz. i knew Dana had this in mind all along. I spammed @ufc and @danawhite asking them to stop beating around the bush and announce the fight. The media was totally oblivious and it’s embarassing that the thought of this fight happening didn’t even pop into their tiny brains. Even while watching the obviously scripted presser.
Diaz isn't a very big welterweight.
He was fighting at 160 not long ago.
BJ has a laser jab, and will be able to get in range easily. He also has a healthy wrestling advantage, and considering this is a 3 round fight, BJ shouldn’t have trouble making it to the bell.

If it stays on the feet
Diaz will push the pace and BJ will gas or knock him out, which ever comes first.
Diaz usually wears out in-shape strikers in 1 or 2 rounds with his pace and finishes them. I don’t see him stopping BJ, but I could see him out-pointing a tired Penn.
You know what its like to have someone come at you full speed. That shit is tiring as hell and gets overwhelming. If you’re not in shape for a long sprint it can be a short night.
That said, if BJ takes this to the ground; an awesome jiu jitsu match will ensue.
For some reason, people discredit Nick’s BJJ but he won the Pan Am as brown belt in 2005. He’s way better now than he was then.

You answered yourself there.
BJ will box for a while and take Nick down when he sees fit. BJ is stronger and will be able to shut Nick down from the top.

BJ is active as hell on top and Nick is on the bottom.
Should be great to watch.

We may even see BJ do some Fitching of his own.

Also, Nick's a pretty big guy. 6'2", easily 180 and really lean.
BJ is barely 165lb.
I think his top shelf guard and lanky but solid build may give BJ(who’s BJJ isn’t looking like a mundial champ’s at the moment) some problems.

yes
The UFC planned all along to sacrifice a lucrative fight for a merely successful one. Airtight.

I have a bad feeling that B.J. will drop Diaz twice (winning a ten-eight round) in the first, then gas. Diaz picks him apart standing and we get another draw.
But, although Penn’s defensive wrestling is legendary, his offensive wrestling is very underrated. Penn could land some big take downs.
Never the less, this has fight of the night written all over it.

Oh snap!
Strange switch, but BJ vs Diaz is an awesome match. I’d have to put my money on BJ finishing Diaz. I envision him dropping Diaz and picking up the change with a choke. Maybe this fight is Diaz’s true punishment.

So Dana goes from “I’ll never trust Nick Diaz again” to putting Nick Diaz in a main event in 24hrs.
Dana’s full of shit. Half of what he says is a combination of BS and emotion.
Main event?
It’s co-main event on the same night he was going to fight. The biggest difference is that he won’t be fighting for the title and from what I hear, he definitely won’t be making the same amount of money.

I'm looking for the chicken and the rice. Please for you give me the chicken then you come with the rice or then you give me the rice and the chicken, I don't care.

Maybe is some way this all will work out for Diaz.
Maybe he was gonna lose this fight with GSP but instead he will win against Penn and then go on to beat GSP or Cond…GSP?
Just when I thought you couldn't possibly be any dumber,
you go and do something like this… and totally redeem yourself!
FOTN candidate
I am betting BJ will take the bout in a split decison
Fuck yes
Its my bday today and this announcement made my day!
Love Diaz , Love Penn, this shit is about to go down, good luck to both!!
So it turns out Diaz being a douche was a blessing in disguise
Sure the build up for Diaz vs GSP would have been awesome. But in terms of the actual fighting I much prefer GSP vs Condit and Penn vs Diaz.
Nice recovery UFC!

Here's hoping...
..Diaz puts down Penn then turns around flips Dana the bird
WAR DIAZ!

Diaz is gonna show ol’ Dana a little ultra violence and social anxiety

When I think of past Penn and Diaz battles they both often bring the Ultraviolence

I hate the way all you UFC nut-huggers lap this crap up.
We’re being deprived of GSP v. Diaz, we may never see Nick in another main event again, let alone title shot. How can anyone not be sad about that?
Clearly
When you have an employee who doesn’t live up to his part of the contract and also lies to you repeatedly, the correct course of action is either:
1. Ignore it and hope for the best. If he doesn’t show for the main event, oh well, I’m sure that won’t cause any problems.
2. Pay him even more while flogging yourself in public for placing any demands on him in the first place. “It was unreasonable of us to ask that the fighter show up to participate in any media events. We don’t really care if this fight makes money for us or not. We’re in business to pass the time, not turn a profit. We apologize to the fighter for not just paying him because he’s alive. In fact, he doesn’t even need to show up to the fight. We’re just happy to have him on the roster.”
Only a UFC nut-hugger could disagree.
Y'know what I think? Don't really matter what I think. Once that first bullet goes past your head, politics and all that shit just goes right out the window.
I don't think the term 'UFC nut-hugger' works anymore
saying as there is no competition left, I mean who else ya gonna shill for?

I wonder if losing the title shot and being humiliated by the UFC will affect Nick's motivation
Or will he put on an even better show to make a point, regardless of who wins?

Damn, alot of you guys are really pinning Diaz down.
I am a huge Penn fanboy but I wont be surprised if Diaz wins this by TKO.
Looks like the oddsmakers have it just about a pick ’em fight.
