TWIQ: MMA Quotes for the Week of August 28 - September 3

NEW YORK NY - JANUARY 13: Dana White UFC President speaks during a press conference to announce commitment to bring UFC to Madison Square Garden and New York State at Madison Square Garden on January 13 2011 in New York City. (Photo by Michael Cohen/Getty Images)

VELASQUEZ VS. DOS SANTOS: IT'S NOT THE KLITSCHKOS!

"You have to put your best foot forward, and we have to go with the most prestigious championship in all of sports..." - UFC President Dana White, holding up the purple-jeweled WAMMA belt he recently won in an auction on eBay. (Fox Sports via Bloody Elbow)

"If we were in boxing, we'd be throwing the Klitschkos in there, which would put everybody to sleep." - White. The entire nation of Germany would be riveted.

"The fans that we've had for years appreciate the fact that when we have thirteen pay-per-views a year, that we give them some big fights for free too." - Dana White. Fans also appreciate pay-per-views headlined by Frank Mir vs. Mirko Cro Cop, Quinton Jackson vs. Keith Jardine, and Rashad Evans vs. Thiago Silva.

"We looked at a lot of different things. What we do is we have a big white board in here. We put all the big guys up on the board." - White, acknowledging, with a wink and a nod, that fighters under 155 pounds weren't considered.

"And the Cain Velasquez-Junior dos Santos fight made the most sense." - White

NOTE: THE WEEK IN QUOTES IS SATIRE. DON'T FORGET THAT FACT LIKE I FORGET TO POST THIS DISCLAIMER.

Star-divide

JOSH BARNETT SAYS SOME THINGS

"Titles and things like that are the spoils of war. You have to go out and win battles before you raid the dead of all their belongings." - Josh Barnett, on the vacant Strikeforce heavyweight title not being put up as collateral in the heavyweight grand prix. (MMA Mania)

"You could almost say that I'm sure he's had his issues growing up with a thing like gigantism, and all the difficulty that's come from that. But gigantism is what actually allows him to be a decent fighter, because he doesn't do anything particularly awesome, but he's just massive." - Barnett. Replace "gigantism" with "steroid use" and turn this quote around on Josh. (MMA Fighting)

CO-PROMOTING AIN'T EASY

"I think it was a deal that made it very difficult to be profitable from." - Strikeforce Director of Communications Mike Afromowitz, on Walter and Skyler White's purchase of a car wash. (Sherdog)

"That was the biggest acquisition we had made as a company. Right away, signing Fedor put our company, put Strikeforce, in that many more households." - Afromowitz. No word on whether those households want to co-promote.

"You know, what's funny is somebody said to me not too long ago, ‘You are never going to make money with Fedor.'" - Afromowitz. There is, however, always money in the banana stand.

"[Fedor] losing two in a row ... maybe it was for the best, from a business standpoint of course." - Afromowitz. Strikeforce was sold to the UFC just over a month later.

TEAM QUESTION MARK

"I never heard anything from [Henderson] before he filed the lawsuit." - Matt Lindland, on a lawsuit filed against him by former friend and business partner Dan Henderson. (Sherdog)

"I thought we were friends. He never called me and said he had a problem with me. He just filed the lawsuit. That's not how I do things. You don't sue your friends." - Lindland. You do, however, sue to get on the Olympic wrestling team.

"I have no idea what the basis for the lawsuit is. None of the documents we've asked for have been delivered to us, so I have no idea what we're being sued for. That would at least tell me why [Henderson] thinks he has a case." - Lindland. Team Quest has never been known for their gameplanning.

WHITE NOISE

"The Japanese ruined him!" - UFC President Dana White, on Daisuke Matsuzaka.(Fight Opinion)

"Obviously... the last thing we want to do and even the stuff that's happened with me, and really in the last 10 years there's been one thing that I've regretted and apologized for and, uh, it was taken out of context. It wasn't a homophobic slur but... this is the fight business, man." - White. Dana conveniently forgetting that he called Loretta Hunt's anonymous source a "faggot."

"I think that people need to stop taking themselves so seriously and... it is what it is." - White. Elegant as always with social issues is Dana White, Joe.

"I mean, look at Fox as a network. Fox is an edgy guy's network. Family Guy, exactly, Family Guy and if you look at the programming on FX, their stuff is edgy. It is what it is, you know... some people are going to get offended and some people are going... if you don't like it, don't watch it." - White. That hole ain't diggin' itself.

PARTING SHOTS

"It's like when I fought Chuck Liddell to get the title. No one counted me in." - Quinton Jackson. When underdog cliches go bad. (MMA Fighting)

"Besides being the champion, she's the highest paid female athlete in the world." - Cris Cyborg's manager Rudimar Fedrigo. Fedrigo mispoke or Strikeforce done gone broken the payscale. (Tatame)

"I feel like I've taken first step in re-building my MMA career." - Andrei Arlovski, who beat Ray Lopez by TKO in round 3 in Pro Elite's zombie show. (Sherdog)

"Just to clarify what happened during Toquinho's fight, he told me that he stopped because his opponent said 'stop, stop' when he was punching him hard. ... Who can say now that 'Toko' isn't a fair fighter? He is just too naive, but he has a big heart." - Murilo Bustamanate, with better spin than the Harlem Globetrotters. (MMA Torch)

Klitschkos

I am German and Dana is kind of right but imo you cant blame the Klitschkos if nobody comes to fight and just wants to collect a paycheck :) Anyway Cains vs Junior will either be fireworks or Cain will exploid Juniors wrestlingskills and we will all snooze :)

Yeah

i like the Klitschkos, but the lack of competition since Lewis retired has made it easy for them to just sit back and do what they do. HW boxing is just terrible the past few years, but it isn’t their fault.

any ifght can turn out in unexpected ways...

but if you wanted to mitigate the chances of that happening, you book a fight like this. And once on the ground, Cain constantly improves position and looks to damage, so even if he wrestles JDS up, it shouldn’t be a snoozer.

I tend to go by what we’ve seen from a fighter. Velasquez has taken down fighters like Kongo, Rothwell and others and has delivered constant ground n pound. It’s hardly lay n pray as he is constantly active on the ground.

JDS is almost impossible to get down, then he IS impossible to keep down. This will be a stand up war. Neither guy is going to want to gas themselves out trying to take the other down.

Terrible commentary on these quotes...

As if the UFC could have known that Mir vs. Filipovic (a last minute replacement for the more intriguing fight originally scheduled) or Evans vs. Silva or Jackson vs. Jardine would have been snoozefests…

And it really doesn’t make any sense to substitute “steroid use” for “gigantism” in the Barnett quote…

And we all know what he meant by “all the big guys” having their names written on the whiteboard.

The quotes themselves are interesting enough without trying to force really stupid jokes into the captions.

What’s your point? All Dana was saying is that he’s aware there are devoted fans out there willing to buy UFC PPV’s and he’s willing to reward them by putting an incredible heavyweight championship fight on free tv. Even if Velasquez vs. Dos Santos turns out to be another boring headliner, there’s a belt at stake in the fight and the outcome is definitely going to have a huge impact on the UFC heavyweight picture.

by BBQ Show on Sep 5, 2011 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions

And I’ve shelled out $55 for more than my share of boring UFC PPV’s but I’m definitely not copping a snarky, wise-ass attitude towards Dana for giving me a free HW title fight.

Miller is still better than half the UFC’s middleweight division. His losses are to three guys who have been consensus top-5 fighters, a top-10 guy and a top-15, and none have been able to stop him. If being outside the top 15 means not being any good at MMA there are a lot of shitty fighters in the UFC.

Plus, all that is beside the point that claiming that Miller shouted “stop, stop, stop” despite the fact he didn’t quit in a much more precarious situation in the second, actively working the second Dean threatened to stop it, and despite Herb hearing nothing of the short is a BS excuse. Toquino screwed up, something he has a history of doing in fights, and trying to pass the buck is lame.

Just Blog Guy - http://JustBlogGuy.wordpress.com/

by JustBlogGuy on Sep 5, 2011 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Toquinho has a "special needs" fight IQ...

the dude doesn’t speak English, heard Dean saying “fight back, I’m going to STOP this” in an arena that was going bananas and thought that it was Miller who yelled “stop.” Still very stupid to do, but I don’t think that Palhares went through his mental rolodex of Miller’s fights to assess his heart as he thought that he was saying “stop.”

Secondly- I disagree that Miller would beat half the MWs in the UFC. The guy’s always game, very difficult to finish and he takes tons of fights at the last moment (to his own detriment), but these qualities don’t overshadow the fact that he’s just not real good. He’s as mediocre as it gets. I’m not saying he should be cut or anything, as guys like him are very valuable to a promotion, but anytime he’s had a chance to get out of the mid-tier, he’s failed. Right now he’s ranked #23, and I wouldn’t give him a chance against anyone above him, #24 would beat him and #25 would be a toss up. In 6 months, he won’t be top 40.

“Mediocre as it gets” doesn’t even make it to the UFC. I’m with JustBlogGuy…Miller could beat at least half the UFC middleweight roster right now. And there are definitely guys above him that he could beat.

As mediocre as it gets for the UFC- and yes, mediocre fighters make it to the UFC all the time. They just don’t stay there. The only ones on the top 25 list I can see him beating are Wanderlei and Sakara. I was going to say Akiyama too, but I actually think that the Sex would take him.

Overrated as what?

You don’t think that they’re top 15-20 fighters? I haven’t heard either of them described as contenders in years. And I disagree on Mayhem- I actually think he’s underrated and should put on a pretty good showing in the UFC. I don’t see him challenging for the belt, but I can see him beating Bisping (a great fight)- in fact, I can see him beating every MW in front of him all the way up to #3- Wand, Lawler, Belcher, Kennedy, Leben, Maia, Stann, Munoz, Jacare- I can see him beating all those guys.

"You never know. I don't know. You know?" -Nick Diaz

by John Danaher's Hair on Sep 5, 2011 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

I believe neither of them should be ranked. Mayhem hasn’t beat a remotely solid fighter in close to four years now. He has fantastic defensive jiu-jitsu, but he’s desperately average everywhere else. His wrestling isn’t great, his striking isn’t great, and he’s made a career out of being an outrageous personality. Mayhem would get worked by Mark Munoz and has been by Jacare already. While those guys are getting better, Mayhem’s not.

As for Belcher, the Cote win was likely the best of his career, but he hasn’t fought in 18 months and has one win at middleweight in almost three years. His fight IQ isn’t very good and while he does have good size and striking for the division, he’s fairly easy to neutralize.

good points all

I can’t argue with anything you say, because you’re stating facts, but I will say that: Jacare edged Mayhem and I can see them splitting 10 fights (though your point about Jacare’s improvement is solid). You’re right, of course, about Mayhem’s schedule recently, but that was a result of him being punished by SF for the brawl and horrible mismanagement on the part of his promoter. I think that he has improved, but that we haven’t been given an opportunity to see it- do you think that Bisping’s going to blow him out?

"You never know. I don't know. You know?" -Nick Diaz

by John Danaher's Hair on Sep 5, 2011 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Mikey fights stupid so much that it’ll be closer than it should be, but as much as people love to bag on Bisping, he’s an extremely solid and well-rounded fighter. He has better wrestling than Mayhem, and much better standup. The keys to beating Bisping (getting to his chin, getting him off his own game) are skills that Mayhem doesn’t bring to the table. I’d be extremely surprised if Bisping finished him, but I think it will be a pretty lopsided decision win for him.

As for Jacare/Mayhem 1, I saw that as a pretty lopsided win for Jacare (which I know is a bit of a minority opinion). Jacare completely controlled the first round outside of the last 30 seconds or so. While Mayhem landed some strikes in the second, Jacare still got him down and mounted him again, and threatened with subs throughout the fight.

I disagree about Bisping having better wrestling, but agree that the Jacare fight was pretty one-sided…only GSP has done as well as that against Mayhem though…

Also disagree about him not improving – he just got his BJJ BB within the last year…
