USA TODAY/MMA Nation September 2011 Consensus Rankings: Heavyweight

Rank Fighter % Promotion Last Rank
1 Cain Velasquez 100 UFC 1
2 Junior dos Santos 95 UFC 2
3 Alistair Overeem 90 UFC 3
4 Brock Lesnar 86 UFC 4
5 Fabricio Werdum 79 Strikeforce 6
6 Frank Mir 74 UFC 7
7 Shane Carwin 73 UFC 8
8 Josh Barnett 68 Strikeforce 9
9 Daniel Cormier 67 Strikeforce 20
10 Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira 64 UFC 11
11 Antonio Silva 46 Strikeforce 5
12 Fedor Emelianenko 39 M-1 12
13 Cheick Kongo 33 UFC 15
14 Brendan Schaub 31 UFC 10
15 Roy Nelson 28 UFC 14
16 Sergei Kharitonov 25 Strikeforce 13
16 Travis Browne 25 UFC 16
18 Matt Mitrione 23 UFC 17
19 Mike Russow 22 UFC 18
20 Cole Konrad 22 Bellator 19
21 Mark Hunt 16 UFC NR
22 Pat Barry 14 UFC 25
23 Stefan Struve 14 UFC 24
23 Shane del Rosario 14 Strikeforce 27
25 Mirko Filipovic 13 UFC 27

#1 Cain Velasquez will defend his belt against #2 Junior dos Santos as they headline the UFC's first ever appearance on network television.

UFC Live: Cruz vs. Johnson this weekend will feature #22 Pat Barry vs. #23 Stefan Struve as they struggle to remain relevant in the admittedly shallow heavyweight division.

And somehow, those two fights make up all of the relevant heavyweight bouts scheduled between now and the next edition of these rankings.

Star-divide

Based on the premise that all MMA rankings are subjective but that it’s still useful and informative to know who the online MMA community as a whole ranks as the best fighters in MMA, we collect and average the rankings of the top MMA websites to produce our consensus rankings. We compile the top MMA rankings from each of our sources and award 25 points for a first place ranking, 16 for a 10th place ranking, 1 for a 25th place ranking. A formula is used to "normalize" the data so all fighters are awarded points from those lists that do not include a full 25 fighters. This formula ensures that each ranking site awards the same number of total points regardless of how many fighters they choose to rank. Each fighter’s total is divided by the number of possible points to determine their standing in the Consensus Rankings.

No higher than 5 for Brock. He was really exposed recently. A nice performance against Overeem puts him at 2 behind Cain / JDS winner.

Not really. You're thinking of Fight Matrix. MMA Ratings doesn't do that.

Top 10 HW matches that UFC can put on.

Cain Velasquez vs Junior dos Santos is already on, UFC on FOX. Alistair Overeem vs Brock Lesnar for UFC 141. They should put on Fabricio Werdum vs Frank Mir in the near future, maybe UFC 145. Barnett and Cormier will now meet in a grand prix final contest in early 2012. Barnett will lose the GP final, UFC can make Shane Carwin vs Josh Barnett happen at UFC 146. Daniel cormier wins Strikeforce GP and UFC gives us, Daniel Cormier vs Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.

PS

I want to see Mark Hunt vs Stefan Struve, after Struve beats Barry.

by HankTheTank on Sep 30, 2011 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I was thinking

Werdum vs Carwin would be a good/relevant HW clash to headline or co-headline UFC 140. The timing would work as well with Werdum stating he would like to fight in december.

Schaub should definately be before Bigfoot

other than that everything is dandy.

I am willing to test myself against the toughest fighters in the world, in front of hundreds of thousands or even millions of fans, over and over again. Sometimes I win, sometimes I lose, but I always come to fight. I've been doing this for the past fourteen years, and I have at least a few more strong years left in me. Daniel Cormier

Is the 4th or 5th best HW in my opinion. I say it’s:

1. JDS
2. Velasquez
3. Overeem
4. Cormier
5. Lestard

by Johnnynumber5 on Sep 30, 2011 3:35 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I agree,

although he hasn’t really done enough to justify ranking him there, I would put money on him heads-up against any HW possibly excepting Cain…

Fedor and Konrad

are the only 2 top 25 heavyweights not with Zuffa.

I would expect Fedor to drop a bit more as time goes on…he isn’t taking on Monson until the end of November. I imagine beyond that he has to be pretty close to retirement.

Konrad is gonna keep being Konrad…but I wouldn’t be surprised if some ranking leapfrogging gets him out of the top 25.
