Gary Shaw On EliteXC Attempts to Sign Fedor Emelianenko 'Nobody's Worth That Price'
Gary Shaw isn't a guy who MMA fans are particularly fond of. His approach to running an MMA promotion with EliteXC was iffy at best and he clearly put too many eggs in the Kimbo Slice basket. But his insight into certain matters is still of some value.
So when the FightHubTV.com guys caught up with Gary, his insight into attempted dealings with M-1 Global and Fedor Emelianenko is worth something.
The juiciest quote (transcribed by MMA Mania):
I did try several times to get Fedor to come to EliteXC, but the numbers they were asking, there's no fighter who was worth that. I wasn't willing to meet their demands. I thought M-1 was very difficult to deal with. It wasn't only Fedor. They wanted to be the co-promoters and the managers and they wanted you to put on so many Russian fighters of theirs on every show. Nobody's worth that price. Maybe if Fedor would have had the right management from the beginning, he might have been in the UFC and been a huge star.
While there are many subjects on which Gary could speak where I'd call BS, this seems pretty well in line with anything else people have said about attempts to work with M-1 and Fedor.
Although, one could point out that many of Gary's current boxers aren't worth the money they're getting either. I'm looking at you, Chad Dawson.

he was referring to the attempts to sign Fedor to Elite XC. he made interesting points there.
he later trashes the new ProElite at the end. he fucks that up effortlessly.

The $haws – see what I did there? – have no involvement in the new ProElite.

true
yet he bolstered the claims that Dana White had made about negotiating with M-1 and their outrageous demands. while there’s no novelty, it corroborates claims heard elsewhere.

Seriously tho people need to get over the Fedor thing
Stop being bitter and pissed off at the dude because he didnt fight in the UFC. The guy went out his way. He may of gotten his ass beat but he went on his shield like every fighter does and with a truckload of money that was backed up to his Dacha every time he fought.
If you didn’t get that, you deserve a lolwut
"He's got a great package... and an unusual one!" Joe Rogan (of Lyoto Machida)
I'll take the lolwut
Now what does that mean?
Business as Usual has a STACKED team. I mean, we could win with just me, but you know.
um, yeah...
people aren’t just pissed because he didn’t fight in the UFC, but rather the reasoning behind WHY he never got to the UFC through M-1’s shenanigans. that’s the real topic.

Many fight fans are simply frustrated that an amazing fighter didn’t get the exposure and big marquee fights they felt he deserved.
But Fedor never cared things like a legacy or any of that, so I hopped off the train a long time ago. His mystique has faded after losing and Dana White is probably using the millions he saved not signing Fedor to swim in, Scrooge McDuck style.

"im looking at you chad dawson"
Im going to have to represent Elm City, Connecticut. i worked with dawsons pops when chad just started making good paydays and we talked about the guys who got out of new haven with their talents. let chad get his money. hes going to get really tested soon and well see if he deservers that money.
I’m more than happy for Chad to get paid. He’s just getting paid more than he should.
Tim Bradley may be a better guy to have taken a shot at though. Dude got a ton of money w/ Devon Alexander and they drew like 350 people.

In all fairness:
Dawson is a pretty good fighter. Boxing generally is just dropping the ball. Sergio Martinez was at Modell’s today trying to sell tickets to his fight with Barker. Per Bad Left Hook, they were apparently giving away free pairs of tickets with $20 purchases. I’m positive promoters just fucking suck at this point.

"I have no say, I have no take, but the people that are running it are losers"
Wonder just what he means by that.
Losers because they might take ProElite and have some success with it…even if on a smaller scale.
Or losers because he thinks they are going to crash and burn the promotion as well.

Chris he pretty much is saying he hates and hopes for any thing and every thing to fail that Doug DeLuca,Jeremy Lappen & Chuck Champion ever do in the future be it with pro elite or not, The relationship the sha’as had with those 3 was like a dysfunctional family at best,I really don’t know how Elite xc lasted as long as it kid knowing what that situation was like and how much the 2 sides who ran the promotion hated one another. Listen to sherdogs interview with $kala aka Jared Shaw sometime and you will se how much the Shaws hate and feel wronged buy what happend with Pro Elite and Elite XC. They bring it up almost any time they can in a interview and just love to bad mouth the 3 I listed above. It’s quite quite sad
ah ok then, thanks for that

Yet another Fedor wasn’t worth the money argument. I think a fighter that hasn’t lost in 10 years is worth a little bit. He was getting paid like he felt he should have. He obviously got his money he wanted since he fought after that. Poor poor Gary Shaw, I feel so bad for the poor guy.
"He's got a great package... and an unusual one!" Joe Rogan (of Lyoto Machida)
I think Fedor was definitley worth a lot of money
Hell, if you remember the numbers circulating that the UFC was willing to offer him…he was worth a ton of money.
But I think the co-promotion demands, direct payments to M-1, as well as featuring other M-1 fighters on cards…those are the type of things that are a little extreme and extraneous.
Fedor was absolutely worth what he was being payed while he was winning…but it’s hard to say M-1 wasn’t abusing the whole ‘We have the #1 heavyweight in the world’ angle and making a few too many demands.
But apparently it wasn’t too many for some…when the organizations were coming up and wanted to challenge the UFC…getting Fedor seemed like a good start…and it seemed like many were willing to do whatever it took to get him.

IMO
A fighter’s window of opportunity is so small, and I think M-1 and Fedor knew that his window was closing and I can’t really blame them for trying to cash in. If M-1 ripped Fedor off, I have something to say about it but Fedor earned the right to get paid all he wants.

And in other news, Gary.

It's that the world is basically a forced labor camp from which the workers, perfectly innocent, are led forth by lottery, a few each day, to be executed.
I don't think that's just the way I see it. I think that's the way it is. Are there alternative views? Yes. Will any of them stand close scrutiny? No.

My boss is Hungarian, and any time you mention the word Russian he just shakes his head. Apparently M-1 isn’t the only impossible Russian entity out there.
The thing about Russia is it’s been so entrenched in mob mentality, that people that have a little bit of power have no concept of reality, because if you were in a powerful mob, you had carte blanche to do whatever you wanted.

I doubt Fedor with all his super religious beliefs would be party to that. He is stubborn but he is honorable. He has been more honorable, humble and respectful than any fighter of his calibre. I don’t doubt that in the slightest. His post fight comments after the Silva fight was, in my opinion classic Fedor even in defeat. He has never had much of an ego. Never celebrated at a defeated foe, never taunted, never insulted. That is why if you ask just about any fighter worth his salt, Fedor is the greatest, or at the very least one of the greatest fighters ever.
"He's got a great package... and an unusual one!" Joe Rogan (of Lyoto Machida)
Yup
Even the police in Russia wear ski masks to protect their identity from the mob. The mobs are as big as the police force. But I’m pretty sure Fedor has nothing to do with that scene, he probably used the money he made through out his career to get as far away from the shitty districts as he can.
