Rashad is winning me over.

I like him now and see where he’s coming from.

i thought that whole showboating.....

stuff in griffin fight was blown way out of proportion, his stint at TUF opposite rampage did no good for him either, seeing as how rabid rampage fans are, i never thought evans was cocky in the first place, i think michael bisping when i hear cocky.

heh.

well spoken black guy talk is funny to me.

don’t get me wrong, i’m not accusing you of racism or anything. i just find it amusing that it needs to be pointed out when a black person is articulate as if it were not common. a lot of people point it out without malice and without realizing it.

no clue where the hell you get that opinion

insert any name instead of Rashad and it still reads in the same context.

That's a fair point...

But I think the MMA fighter identity plays a role here. It’s not super rare, but it’s definitely notable when any combat athlete is as intelligent and eloquent as Rashad.

Yeah,

anyone who has seen a Mike Tyson or Chuck Liddell interview probably doesn’t expect fighters to be fast, smooth talkers like Rashad, Chael, Frank Mir, etc

my point is that we shouldn't be surpised.

as far as fighters go, there are more articulate top level MMA fighters than what the general public might expect. it kind of reminds me of how surprised people were when Obama came out on the national scene and people were commenting on how articulate he was.

No body ran from the division when Wandy or Liddell reigned for years. Well, except for Rich Franklin probably left the weight class because of these guys for MW. Jones is a fighter like anyone else. Anderson hasn’t chased anyone away either, besides…..Franklin.

Jones specifically said he thought he could beat Machida.

by IKiIIed007 on Sep 23, 2011 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions

He didn’t even chase Franklin away. Rich knew he wasn’t getting another shot anytime soon and the UFC asked him to start doing Franklinweights instead. Instead of being #2 in a division with no chance at a title shot he moved up.

by Empty Thoughts on Sep 23, 2011 6:42 PM EDT up reply actions

What?
He didn’t even chase Franklin away. Rich knew he wasn’t getting another shot anytime soon…so he moved up.

by Urijah Bieber on Sep 23, 2011 6:48 PM EDT up reply actions

His moving up wasn’t his running away. I mean he fought the champ twice and took beatings both times, Franklin is not the type to get scared and run. Not hard to follow really.

by Empty Thoughts on Sep 23, 2011 7:02 PM EDT up reply actions

i do remember Franklin claiming on various occasions that he’s more comfortable due to the lack of a weight cut at 205. that might be the case.

"The Glen Rice scandal is way out of line w/ the GOP's values. They're interested in fucking black people by the millions, not one at a time"

by Victor Rodriguez on Sep 23, 2011 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep, that is also a factor with it. Franklin has gotten older and doesn’t like the weight cutting anymore.

Still though, Urijah is taking the simplest answer to it and claiming it is the only answer. Franklin knew he wasn’t getting another shot at Anderson until the division was cleaned out, the UFC needed somebody to take fights that were out of the division, moving up opened up quite a few more marquee fights for him, etc…

Until Rich says otherwise, I personally think that if the UFC called him up tomorrow and asked him to fight Anderson he would do just that. He made a business decision to move weights, he didn’t do it because he was having nightmares about Silva. It’s insulting to say otherwise about him imo.

by Empty Thoughts on Sep 23, 2011 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Why are you arguing against fear and nightmares

I don’t think I said that. Silva absolutely ran Rich Franklin the hell out of town though. The thoughts and feelings and motivation of Rich Franklin while he was leaving can be debated, but that is just what happened.

by Urijah Bieber on Sep 23, 2011 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions

i agree that Franklin must have thought he wasn’t getting another crack at Anderson after getting served as coldly as he did twice in a row until the division was cleaned out. he must have gotten comfortable with being where he’s at. i kind of agree with you as far as Franklin leaving middleweight because of Silva, but he may have stayed out for different reasons. that said, i can’t really hate on Rich for it anyway. he’s still a phenomenal dude.

"The Glen Rice scandal is way out of line w/ the GOP's values. They're interested in fucking black people by the millions, not one at a time"

by Victor Rodriguez on Sep 23, 2011 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Of course the main reason he left the division was Silva. I just don’t believe though he was ran out of town like Urijah wants to state. Instead he knew that his options at 185 were basically fighting everybody but Silva again so he took the marquee fights offered and moved up.

And yes, Rich rocks. He gets not even close the amount of respect he should as a fighter.

Jones on Machida in 2009

http://www.cagepotato.com/jon-jones-doesnt-think-lyoto-machida-christ-or-bruce-lee/

"I think Machida is getting a lot of hype, and I know he has lots of big wins over a lot of big fighters, and a lot of experience over me. I don’t think he’s Christ; I think he’s very beatable. They’re looking at him and his karate like he’s Bruce Lee. He’s not Bruce Lee…I honestly believe that a great Muay Thai champion will beat a great karate fighter any day; it’s been proven on lots of occasions.

If Machida has (the belt) by the time I get to that level, I’ll be ready for him. I’ll have a lot of game planning and a lot of strategy ready. I want to be that greater Muay Thai fighter to beat a great karate champion. I don’t think Rashad Evans came with any type of game plan, but to look really cool or look really fancy, dancing around in pretty footwork stances. He really didn’t come up with any way to beat him. I didn’t see any of his strengths. I didn’t see any takedown attempts or any straight right hands that are always good against southpaws or anything. He was just out there looking flashy.

I’m going to go out there and pull the trigger if I ever get to fight Machida…I know I have a lot of time before I get to that level of fighting him, but when I do, I definitely won’t be nervous or intimidated by him at all, and (I’ll be) ready to fight him."
