UFC 135: Rampage Jackson Outs Spy, Accuses MusclePharm Employee
In the never-ending cycle of media relations leading up to UFC 135 this weekend, current UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and challenger 'Rampage' Jackson appeared on ESPN's Sportscenter this morning. The usual verbal sparring match ensued, but Jackson dropped a bomb during the segment, claiming that a man named "Leonard", who worked for his sponsor MusclePharm, was the spy in his camp feeding Jon Jones information.
According to a SEC Filing issued on September 16, 2011, MusclePharm executive vice president Leonard Armenta resigned from his position with the company, leading to some speculation that he was, in fact, the 'Leonard' that Jackson is accusing in the interview. Jackson stated on Twitter that he didn't want to reveal the man's full name out of respect for MusclePharm, so it isn't confirmed whether Armenta is the man Jackson is talking about.
Jon Jones took to Twitter moments later, stating it "sucks" an employee at MusclePharm was fired over Rampage's paranoia:
Some of the immediate reactions to the news, especially if you buy into the notion that Leonard Armenta's resignation has everything to do with 'Spygate', has been mostly positive toward Jackson. Rampage delivered a name when pressed by Jones to reveal the spy, and the SEC filing could be connected to Rampage's claim. We have no idea if the resignation of Armenta and Rampage's claim are connected though.
It also brings up another question that seems to get ignored in all the arguing. If spying did actually occur, who's to say that Jon Jones even knew about it? Perhaps a pissed off former employee gave the information to Jones' camp. Hard to ignore a phone call from a legitimate source who says Rampage is hurt, isn't it? In any case, the saga probably won't end here.

I really haven't been paying much attention to this
To me, this is outside of MMA and something thats ‘other’ because I feel that spies could only do so much.
So they have a spy who is giving them info on what he sees? How reliable or effective is that?
‘Yeah, he trained like, some of this stuff today’…okay, that’s all well and good. But there are something like 40 fights Rampage has that you can watch and actually see how he applies himself vs what he trains.
Also, this easily could have been a non-spy effort anyway. This leonard guy may have simply heard Rampage was heart, and felt like spreading the info in a completely harmless way to the other guys camp.
That is a total non-spy issue. But of course, the paranoid fucking Rampage sees it as a spy, then Malki Kawa has to explain where he heard it. But he can’t say he heard it from this Leonard VP guy because while Leonard probably just passed the information around as a sort of casual effort…it’s now being misconstrued as something with heinous intent…so Malki can’t just out the guy.
So Malki says that he saw it on twitter, which Rampage says there was nothing on twitter and is even more convinced os spies.
Rampage isn’t going to back down from any statement because he is an asshole. So his bottom line was ‘found out who told them about my fake broken hand, and say that he is a spy’ and so that’s what he did.
I think this is one huge misunderstanding and Leonard merely felt he was being cordial by telling Kawa that Rampage had broken his hand…for whatever reason. Or maybe Rampage talked some shit to this guy and he wanted to screw with Rampage…Rampage is a huge asshole, we can’t forget that.
So yeah, I sincerely doubt there was any spy. Can we stop talking about this now?

The issue was regarding an injury to a specific region of his body. Rampage faked it to out the spy, and he did that because he felt training partners were coming in and trying to hit him in areas he was previously hurt. He figured that some of the guys coming in were informed of this, and trying to hurt him more. So, he made up an injury to out the spy. Apparently, it worked.
Training wise, I don’t think it helps that much. But knowing where a guy is hurting when he comes into a fight could be valuable.

what he is training, what he is looking to avoid, what he is looking like in camp etc are huge. I think it’s clear Jackson’s camp is dirty and this is another example.

You generally don’t start to work on very SPECIFIC ways to counter your opponent until a few weeks out from the fight. And you’re only going to do that kind of training one- on- one with your coach.

Glad it’s over. So some MusclePharm employee was a Jon Jones fan, big deal. Acting like spies have been planted in his camp just confirms to me that Quinton is a pretty paranoid guy. Everyone is gay, everyone is counting him out, people are spying on him, people are disrespecting him. Same old stuff.

I see it as an advantage in the context of game-planning only.
With regard to techniques, training modalities and so forth, a spy is generally useless. In the context of delivering information concerning an intended game-plan, however, a spy could be of certain use. That said, Rampage has never been known for brilliant game-planning.

It is about injuries
Rampage was injured in the Evan’s fight. Evan’s magically was punching Rampage’s injury, even though he never told anyone outside his camp about said injury.
IDK why this is so hard to understand. It isn’t about game plans… it is about injuries.

The strike to the knee when someone is against the cage is common
I doubt Evans ‘knew’ that was Rampage’s hurt knee.
I am not a fan of Evans at all…but I don’t think there is any spying going on anyway.
I mean, if you have an injured rib, leg, or something…at some point in th fight the opponent is going to strike you there…at least that’s more then likely…and either you will react noticeable worse and tip him off, or you won’t.

I’d think any information might help, even if just in feeling like you have a psychological edge, but it’s certainly small potatoes. It’s just that calling the guy a “spy” is a ridiculous use of the term. Even if any of this is true, the Jones camp didn’t plant the guy at MusclePharm, years ago with orders to someday infiltrate Rampage’s training camp. I find it pretty unbelievable to think anyone was approached with an offer of compensation for information. At worst, this is what’s known as a “leak” of information. Is this guy a MMA trainer? Would he even know what he was looking at in watching Rampage train and spar? The whole “spy” angle is just the media running with Rampage’s statements because it sounds like a good story. Either way, whether this is just Rampage’s imagination, or if a guy at MusclePharm was a fan of Jon’s and thought he would help them out, Rampage always thinks there’s a spy on him. He brought it up himself in his initial complaint about this. Either way, I don’t think it has anything to do with Jon himself.

If he did tell someone about the fake injury,
then he IS a spy, whatever his intentions were. It’s not his responsibility to diverge confidential information, and I’m sure he signed a contract that said he would not do so.

Let’s get to the damn fight already. I like trash talk and a good build up for a fight, but this is getting so ridiculous. I’m rooting for rampage, but think Jones will win. Is Bones going to actually stare down Page at the weigh ins? He did at the conference. Those things are more interesting than spygate to me.
i think both are trying to be creative with the staredowns...

He’s done talking. Even if this isn’t as bad a cut as some others, you know he’s done with this, and doesn’t want to talk about Jon anymore, or his accusations, how he feels, none of it. Pretty normal for Page to get quiet and surly the day or two before a fight.

What I don't get about the spy thing is that he complained about this before
He said that he suspected Rashad had a spy in his camp. That is why he was elbowing him in the knee(that was hurt) or whatever. However this is his first time training at this MusclePharm gym.
The guy resigns and people blame Rampage for it? I bet he’s playing the game. telling people yet I outed him and he had no choice but to resign when in reality he probably just resigned for his own reasons.
I wouldn’t be surprised if there is no connection between the two and Rampage just knew he quit so he’s using this convenient quit as a way to drive the story to make Jones look bad.

Jon Jones knew and outed himself
In an earlier interview — I believe it was used on the Countdown special — Jon Jones responds to the Spygate accusation by saying, “I don’t know what Rampage has been drinking at MuscleFarm but …”
I thought it was odd for Jones to suddenly bring up Rampage’s sponsor by name in this controversy, and now it’s clear why he did.
Same reason he said on Twitter “I’ve gotta start practicing elbow defense” on the day Rampage was drilling elbows.
Jones is trying to be cute and get in Rampage’s head. But he got too cute and now Rampage is making him look like an ass.

Rampage is training at some million dollar MusclePharm facility in Denver. His whole camp is there.
It is getting harder and harder to ignore all the cheating out of the Jackson camp.
Greasing from multiple fighters, HGH accusations, spying. His fighters at the highest levels always have perfect game plans, know where to attack, and are immune to submission holds. Jackson fighters are the best for a reason. They cheat.

Penn vs Fitch
anyone who says a spy (who can reveal a gameplan) isnt a big deal, watch that fight and tell me Penns gameplan didnt play a HUGE part in their fight. Everytime you hear a figther say well he surprised me I thought he was gonna do (fill in blank) that was a game plan that changed the course of the fight. was Bones involved, I doubt it, but his management team was and thats just as bad.
What is that talk about Rampage spending north of 1 Million $?
I’ve never heard about it before watching the video. Did he invest in the Muscle Pharm training facility?

This is a win-win for us.
We either get Bones vs Evans or Page vs Evans. Yessiree I like it.

I would not want to be around Quinton when he cuts weight

Jones always comes off flustered
when him and rampage get into it
I'm the best ever, I'm the most brutal and vicious
And most ruthless champion there's ever been
There's no one can stop me, there's never been nobody who could -
I'm Sonny Liston, I'm Jack Dempsey, there's no one like me
I'm from their cloth, there's no one who can match me
Praise be to Allah!
not only has Jones never faced a fighter like Rampage, he’s never faced a shit-talker of his caliber. you and i would be just as flustered.

I can't believe people haven't wised up to this sit.
It’s a fucking hype job to build interest for the fight. I’m actually both surprised and saddened by how many people fell for this shit.
