Yesterday I spoke with Talk Sport Radio about the Cage Fighting Kids story firing up the UK news media to give my take on it. It was my first Radio interview ever, so while nervous I think I did OK.

Heard you as I was driving home from work.
You went ok I thought, but the whole thing was always gonna be a struggle with Durham and Gough, especially Durham who’s an utter tit.
I think the key was
Making sure I got a word in without being interrupted.

I didn't hear the interview...
…but i saw this story on the news earlier and would like to thank you for joining the debate. MMA is slowly making ground over here but there’s still a lot of knee-jerk sensationalism about it, even in the more ‘intelligent’ sections of the media. The news presenter i saw’s reaction to a a short clip of the two lads grappling (pretty skillfully actually) was ludicrously overblown but fortunately one of their coaches was on the show and responded to the critisisms in a very measured and eloquent way.
What struck me from the footage i saw was that if those boys had been in a gi then what they were doing could easily have been mistaken for judo, which is what myself and many others here in the UK were doing at their age and which was generally encouraged by parents, teachers ect.
Having read your articles before i’m sure you gave a good account of yourself. Again, thanks

Excellently done KJ
As others have said, I commend you for being able to actually get your point across whilst talking to Adrian Durham. At the end of the day, I get the impression his persona on the radio is merely a front. He will always go down the other route so to speak, purely to spark debate on TalkSport that is essentially, a sports debate radio station.
Durham and Gough have touched on MMA in the past and seemed entirely clueless. Although the sport isn’t exactly main stream over here, If I was on a national radio station and was going to give my opinion, i’d probably do a bit of research before I did.
They seemed to want your point of view though and took what you had to say on board, which is a plus. They could have been entirely dismissive and followed the rest of the British media in saying the whole thing was a farce and never should have been allowed to happen, but they didn’t.

I think when they came up against someone who actually was informed, it was much harder to rant and rave in the usual sensationalist way.
In this interview you have a polite, intelligent sounding man, making well structured and insightful comments. I’m quite amazed that at least one media organisation actually had the balls to let that side of the argument be heard, and did it so respectfully.
Agreed. Like I said when they touched on MMA in the past, they seemed largely clueless. The fact KJ has been able to put his points across, it would appear they simply didn’t have a reply to even stir the pot, nevermind actually oppose the idea of MMA taking place in a cage.
It’s nice to actually see both Durham and Gough agree when they’re informed as to how the cage is there essentially, to benefit the fighters also.

Half way through and you've done very well.
You touched upon all the points I wanted to hear addressed.
good work
what did you think of ther second half dick? :)
the thing is with these phone-ins is that the presenters are going to try to be outspoken and controversial and the people who they allow on are usually clueless, reactionary numpties so in that respect you must’ve seemed like the dalai lama coming on.
is your next job to get the BBC to report on UFC events?
My next job might be to report for the BBC at UFC events!
But who knows if that will ever happen. BBC have had to make a lot of cuts in the last couple of years, including their BBC 606 sport website. By not being a commercial service even if there was demand for UFC or MMA coverage because it could possibly draw attention and therefore interest advertisers, the BBC being a publicly paid for service can pick and choose what they want and it’s down to the powers that be.

That would be fantastic!
Getting actually sporting coverage from the BBC would be a massive step forward for MMA in the UK.
K-1 Level Predictions Team
It would be
But I think it’s probably pure fantasy. BBC is too conservative. If there was a network that could have helped UFC or MMA it would have been Channel 5 but they didn’t really do anything by not trying out programming at prime time or having cross promotion on the little sport they do show.

2nd half was great too!
He did a much better job than Gareth Davies did.
hehe. as a brit i’d have to say that davies is a bit of an embarrassment really. i cant help but cringe every time he uses unnecessarily long words in his efforts to impress. and he was nominated for mma journo if the year wasnt he? dearie me
Agreed, i’m not too high on Gareth Davies if i’m completly honest. He seems to really be the only mainstream MMA journalist the UK has to offer and therefore his word is either taken as gospel, or is the only opinion that is taken into mainstream discussion. That’s not his fault or anybody elses, but it would be nice to have other professional opinions to call on.
I’ve seen him a few times on MMA discussion panels with the likes of Rashad Evans and co before PPV’s and I just sort of..hope for the best whenever he opens his mouth, haha.

Great job getting some actual information out there as opposed to the idiocy.
I have always enjoyed your articles and comments, but that may be forever ruined now that I have heard you talk.
;)
Hmm, not sure how to take this comment.
I trust it means my vocal skills are superior to my writing skills. Yeah, that’ll do #coughs#

You are incredibly British lol. Great interview. You didn’t sound nervous and you sound like you’ve done radio before.
My first radio appearance was Jim Rome.

actually not at all
It was during the Barry Bonds home run record race where Rome was criticizing Selig for not being there or acting like he cared and I defended Bud for not being there, saying he didn’t inject the athletes with steroids and that he doesn’t have an obligation to attend every game Bonds plays while he was chasing the final HR. Rome felt he should have to own the steroid era. Over time I have sort of come to believe that more and more, but either way Rome told me I had a I good take. I have the file saved somewhere on an old HD. I became a Rome insider to get it. I ended up paying for a membership for like a year and never used it after the first day.

I don’t think the state athletic commissions work for the federal government as you said (at 1:52, roughly). It’s one reason why fighters like, say, Josh Barnett can be licensed in one state but not another. Or why in some states but not elsewhere they disclose the fighters’ payouts.
Sorry to nitpick. In all other respects, tremendous discussion and I think you edified them.
.....
Yeah I said US government
But it’s the individual state government. I fumbled somethings, saying athletic state commissions instead of state athletic commissions. First time on radio after all.
