People will like Jones

if he gets beaten badly and stages a gritty comeback. Right now it all seems too easy.

People hate on Jones...

Because they are jealous of his success at an early age. They like to

Bring down successful people because of how disappointed they are of their own lives. That’s the only way you can talk so much shit on someone you never met.

Succesful people are the most people friendly? orly?

I’m pretty successful in my life, I have everything I want and need, i’m no millionaire but I still don’t like jon jones, he seems like a douche to me.

Charisma is kinda a “you got it or you don’t” kinda thing and he don’t.

I understand that many people are annoyed by Christains who state their beliefs and express their love for their religion. But what I can not understand is when people decide to question that person’s integrity because they’re passionate.

I guess it is hard to believe another person’s passion if you have no passion at all? I don’t know. I’m not a psychiatrist.

quote jesus and have a live in girlfriend and a baby out of wedlock.

Wwjd?
I don’t care what he does, but I am not sure he has read that book that he had verses tattooed on his chest from.
Also when you repent for your sins you have to mean it. If you have never stopped doing it how could you repent?
Unless its just lip service. Which it would be and that speaks to character. Hence why someone could see phonyness in his words and actions.
To claim a religion and continuously defy it makes no sense and speaks to character.

Wait, are we really judging what kind or how good of a Christain he is?
Let he who has not sinned throw the first stone. That’s in the same book.

Do you have information or are you taking a tally of more sins committed by Jon Jones?

It points to fakeness. Or lacking the courage of your convictions? Either way that’s what I was referencing, but I don’t wanna talk religion.

Jon Jones isn't One of Us

He’s black!

Seriously, though, I can’t follow Snowden’s logic here. The most popular UFC fighters of all time are probably GSP and Brock. Does Brock fit better into the “normal guy who succeeds through hard work” or “freakish natural athletic gifts who was protected and achieved immediate MMA success” mode? Is GSP a regular guy, athletically? Is Jones less popular than Frankie Edgar, the only UFC champion who even remotely fits Snowden’s Just Folks category?

How was Brock Lesnar protected?

A dirt poor farmboy from South Dakota who had to build his body and work hard to become an NCAA champion? And to come into the UFC with only 1 fight and face a former champion in his first fight? and defend his title against at the time two undefeated wrecking balls in Shawn Carwin and Cain Velasquez after a bout with diverticulitis. He’s also coming back after another bout with diverticulitis against Alistair Overeem. That’s not being protected.

When history looks back on Lesnar’s MMA career, it will show that he has had the most dangerous work schedule compared to Velasquez, JDS and Carwin.

Protected was exactly the wrong word, sorry

I meant that Brock is a pretty close analog for Jones in terms of athletic “gifts” and got to the top of his division in the UFC very quickly – much faster than Jones, in fact. There is nothing that indicates that Brock works harder than Jones, now or when growing up. Yet Brock is a hugely popular fighter responsible for the best selling PPVs ever and Jones is, allegedly, not clicking.

Snowden’s argument is that Jones isn’t popular because of his freakish athleticism and because things “fell into place for him” in the UFC. I think Brock had the exact same qualities and was a superstar, so if Jones is indeed not popular it must be for some other reason.

This article has been written again and again and again.’

Here’s a reallly odd but applicable quote for you.

I bet you I’ve taken over 60 steroid tests. In college I had 15 random drug tests in two years. I’ve taken drug tests for the NFL, the WWE, the UFC. I must be pretty good at masking steroids. God gave me this body: Are you jealous of it or what? Give me a break. I got the genetics of—not to get into racism or anything — but I’m built like a black man. Would you say so? … It’s all genetics. I wouldn’t say we’re all created equal. That’s just to make the other guys feel good who don’t have what you’ve got."

It’s odd, it’s weird and wrong in so many ways. I could have easily taken his statement out of context but the entire comment is so loaded with . . . crap, psuedo science, etc.

yes, athletes are good at masking steroids.

And WWE tests aren’t worth the paper they are printed on.

his genetics are there, and they are great.

But I would bet the farm on the fact he is/has/will be on gas and no one should fault him for it. It’s impossible to maintain that kind build naturally. It’s also impossible to get that build with out great genetics.

Odd to be defending Lesnar, but the point is, he has good genetics that suit what he does, just like a genius physicist is not just a math student who worked hard. Also, he is right – not everyone can be president, or an olympian, or a Nobel Prize winner, that is a myth.

Super sloppy article

as I said over at MMA Nation.

The big draws in MMA with a couple of exceptions (Randy and Forrest, principally) have NEVER seemd like “ordinary blue collar joes”—BJ, GSP, Rampage, Royce, Tito, Chuck, etc.

You could maybe throw Matt Hughes into the exception pile—but it took Matt a loooong time to become a draw.

Snowden is seriously reaching in this article.

hughes is extremely gifted.

He is said to have Chimp like strength.

Yeah,

to be more clear, obviously every top flight athlete is not like you or me (or at least, not like me anyways!). Hughes is an immensely gifted athlete and fighter, one of the best ever.

But the narrative for some athletes (e.g. Hughes and Randy in MMA, also Forrest) is that they are ordinary blue-collar working guys, like guys you hang out with, and through hard work and grit etc. they magically became top-tier athletes. That’s the narrative—which is false as most sports narratives are.

I’m pointing out that most of the big draws in MMA don’t even have that as a narrative. No-one ever looked at Brock Lesnar and thought, oh what an ordinary fellow!

by jhf884 on Sep 20, 2011 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t like him, and I think the reason for it is because he is mostly unlikable. He is quick to smile, but way to self serious and unable to laugh at anything about himself. He might be charming to some, but it’s a measured, ingenuine, charm. He does remind you of someone better than you, but growing up it would be the privileged yet overly driven kid who is so overburdened with expectations that he barely has a personality of his own. But that’s just the image I’ve developed over a couple very controlled media presentations of him, so who knows what he’s really like.

by Balrog on Sep 20, 2011 2:51 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t like him because he seems like a prick. His personality just doesn’t feel genuine to me. The way he is on twitter, the way he speaks, he just sounds like one of those stuck up guys who takes things way too serious & probably can’t take a joke.

Rampage on the other hand, even though he can be a dick too, is a guy I can root for. Different people give off different vibes & depending on the kind of person you are, you either like them or you don’t.

The reason people don’t like Jon Jones is because his personality turns people off. It’s not racist, or hating, or trolling. It stems from a simple dislike of a persons personality.

by discoandherpes on Sep 20, 2011 3:44 PM EDT reply actions

Jon Jones clicks with most people. The millions rooting for him in the cage will out weigh the thousands bitching online.

Many people don’t view these types as hardcore fans but whiny, girly, fickle, nerds who spend to much time on the computer. Grown ass men, crying because some fighter won’t sign their toy belt. (He autographs kids belts.) The ticket sales, the ppv sales, the explosive cheers from the crowd shows that this kid does click. He clicks with everyone except a handful of internet haters whose opinion doesn’t amount to much anyway. Your hate won’t affect sales or the outcome of the fight. He’s the new guy that can beat the brakes off of your hero and you don’t like it. Shogun fans can’t get over it. Evans, Machida, and, Page fans hate it. He doesn’t kiss their ass either, that pisses people off. Instead of gsp’ing his speech he said “I AM BETTER THAN SHOGUN!” and he is. Finally if you are a personality fan be that, but stop calling yourselves “hardcore” or fight fans because you’re not. You’re gossip fans.

by djkrazykill on Sep 20, 2011 7:04 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

It's basically jealousy with a bit of racism mixed in.

But it isn’t racism so much as “I dislike this guy because he is black” because I’m a massive fan of Rashad and Silva and Overeem and so on. It’s more a dislike of ‘that guy’ who can walk into a gym and not even seemingly lift heavy weights and bam he’s huge and shredded. ‘That guy’ who could basically walk into any sport and outstrip someone who has been training in said sport all of their life and can’t quite get over that last hill due to a lack of genetic gifts. And I’m not trying to be a dick here but like 75% of the time those guys are black. Obviously there are white guys out there like it too. One of my best friends seems to balloon when he even looks at a dumbbell. It’s all genetics.

So it’s natural to be jealous of those types because as Snowden says, when you watch a guy like a Royce Gracie or a Forrest Griffin or yeah, even a Matt Hughes, there is that sense in the back of your mind that even as a somewhat mediocre athlete, if you trained hard and did the right things you could do what they do. There’s nothing like that with Jones.

I think Jones will take off in popularity if either someone gives him a vicious beating and he comes back to win, or decides to fuck being humble and embraces his cockiness. The latter would make him a villain but I bet it’d sell PPVs.
