UFC on Fox 'Major Announcement' Conference Call Live Updates

NEW YORK NY - JANUARY 13: Dana White UFC President looks on during a press conference to announce commitment to bring UFC to Madison Square Garden and New York State at Madison Square Garden on January 13 2011 in New York City. (Photo by Michael Cohen/Getty Images)

The UFC announced a special media conference call for 1 p.m. ET today. Few details were announced outside of UFC President Dana White's participation, though White tweeted, "The "BIG Announcement" 2 morrow at 10 am will be the FOX fight. The UFC and FOX are so pumped for @UFCONFOXSports!!!!!!!!" after the press release was sent out.

Follow Mike Fagan on Twitter for live updates. Matt Roth will provide a running digest here, and check this post following the conclusion of the call for a full recap of the proceedings.

Speculation has, predictably, run rampant over the past 18 hours or so. Given the swirling information, my educated guess has these fighters most likely to appear in the show's main event, in order of likelihood: Frank Mir, Alistair Overeem, Brock Lesnar, Tito Ortiz, Rich Franklin, Dan Henderson, Mauricio Rua.

Mir has been linked in rumors to both Alistair Overeem and Brock Lesnar, and seems like a virtual lock at this point. All signs point to Overeem having signed with the UFC, even if he will not appear on the Fox show. Lesnar rumors have resurfaced, though Dana White penciled him in for a 2012 return. Tito Ortiz and Rich Franklin would be an OK, if uninspired, co-main, and an atrocious choice to head the card. Dan Henderson, according to various Twitter reports, has yet to sign with the UFC, while Mauricio Rua's camp claims they wouldn't be ready for a November date.

I’m expecting Tito vs. Franklin but I’m hoping for AO vs. Mir

Tito vs Franklin as ME would be disappointing

But fine for a co-main. I’m not expecting UFC to sacrifice a major PPV draw, but I’d like to see something more relevant in contenders or maybe lesser drawing champions.

Tito vs Franklin headliner and mir vs overeem co main. Not my choice but from a business stand point, im going with the reverse.

It's a MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT from Dana

After the last couple of them (mainly the SF buyout) we are due for a disappointing one.

I agree. Tito will be on the card to attract casuals but I disagree with people who think that a mainstream draw is needed or the event fails. Outside of tito who is known outside of the hardcore crowd? Almost no one other than brock. Who’s health is up in the air. I would like to see reem and mir. A clash of heavys is always attractive. Ortiz/ franklin co.main would get the casuals. Would be happier with a guida/ henderson co.main though.

by XingYi on Sep 2, 2011 12:25 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I think Guida Henderson is a no go for the Fox show. It makes me kinda glad since I want it to be a main event (5 rds.)

I don't think Mir vs Overeem will headline

Overeem and Mir aren’t big enough household names to headline the very first card. It’s a great one for hardcores but casual fans, not so much. Tito vs Franklin makes more sense from a business stand point. Tito has huge draw and Franklin’s has declined as of recent, but he’s still a recognizable name.

Matchups don't = major announcement

It’s something else.

If part of the announcement is who the main event will feature, that will only be a bonus, not the part that makes it “major.” They announce fights almost every day, including main events with big names, so it’s not major to announce a fight* with this kind of buildup.

It just means shifting a fight from PPV to free TV. Are “casual” fans supposed to believe this is representative of what they’re going to be seeing each time there are fights on Fox? Good luck with that when they find out they’re getting a steady diet of TUF contestants.

How is this "major"?

This fight was already announced. They just moved the date. If anything, we’re being cheated out of the extra super fight we all thought they were going to announce. Not to mention, their previously scheduled card on UFC 139 has taken a major hit. That card has lost all of its luster now. I guess it’s good news for FOX, but i don’t see why FOX’s good fortune excites you as a fan.

Don’t act like you won’t. Or if the loss of the Cain/JDS fight makes you skip it, then it seems like this isn’t such a win for the UFC afterall. It would have been a much better announcement had they found a NEW big fight to headline this card, then we could have had consecutive weeks of BIG fights. They just sabotaged UFC139 to make the FOX card big.

it’s not a zero sum game. These guys are not major PPV draws, so it’s not like a lot of buys are disappearing, and that will be made up for by the huge exposure the week before the event on network TV.

AS draws, so that the next PPV they’re on will draw. Why is that so hard to understand?

139 is already a badass event from my perspective. Sure they will need to find a replacement main event, but that will happen.

Whether or not you consider that new main event worthwhile is up to you. Whether or not you consider having Cain and JDS for free on network tv shouldn’t be though.

What? Is prize fighting a charity now?

Do people watch football because it’s so important that the players become millionaires or is it so the NFL owners can stay BILLIONAIRES? I’m a fan of MMA, but it’s a symbiotic relationship. I care more about what I get out of the exchange than what they get. Any sensible consumer would say the same thing! I don’t applaud multi-billion dollar TV deals for the NFL and i don’t applaud moves that make billionaires like the Fertittas and Rupert Murdoch even more money. What the hell type of person celebrates another man’s dominance over the rest of mankind? If you’re celebrating this news because you can save your PPV dollars (I find it hard to believe that many people are paying 65 bucks without the aid of a few friends or the local sports bar anyway), then more power to YOU, but stop acting like if the UFC keeps getting bigger, that it’s gonna cost you any less (might even cost you more) in the long run.

No. I wasn't gonna watch it live.

My point is, if you like this newws because now you can save your 65 bucks on the UFC139 card, then that makes sense, but if this excites you because you theorize that it will somehow be huge for the sport or the fighters, then you’re misleading yourself. This NOT good for Urian Faber, Brian Bowles, Josh Koscheck, Matin kampmann, and the rest of the guys who are losing eyeballs from 139 as a result. And frankly, I don’t think this fight is gonna do the numbers people think it’s gonna do, nor do i think that subsequent PPVs are gonna see a spike in their numbers due to newly acquired eyeballs for the sport. Either way, it’s not a major announcement except for FOX and UFC execs.

by Grease S. Pieces on Sep 2, 2011 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

a 1 hour commercial on national television a week before their event is certainly going to fuck them right in the ass.

by Phildo on Sep 2, 2011 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

No it won't.

But it’s still not MAJOR news. If a major fight against Brock Lesnar doesn’t turn Cain into a draw, then neither will an ass whooping at the hands of JDS. The only thing I can see the UFC gaining out of this is that one of these fighters (the victor) will become a marginal draw in his subsequent fights. This event will do little for any other fighter in the sport.

by El Pablo Diablo on Sep 2, 2011 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm willing to bet anything you want...

….that the impact of the FOX fight will be negligible on subsequent PPV buys. These guys aren’t monster draws. The UFC already has tons of fans, and still can’t get US fans excited about an Anderson Silva title fight! I don’t care if 30 million viewers tune it to watch JDS vs Cain (which definitely won’t happen), the following week’s card wil STILL be a bust!

by Grease S. Pieces on Sep 2, 2011 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions

in all honesty,

this entire year has been a bust compared to last year as far as PPV purchases. but compared to 5 years ago….10 years ago, its pretty incredible.

But putting on a fight that is all but a garanteed slobber-knocker, featuring heavyweights (which the general public eats up) in a title fight will turn new eyes onto the sport and will very much so affect growth and PPV numbers down the road. The sport has more or less plateaued over the last year, and this is an enormous opportunity to kick start some new growth and create some new fans.

This is smart business 101.

by El Pablo Diablo on Sep 2, 2011 4:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Get this idea in your head already. It ISN’T the money that is making most people excited. It’s what this could mean for the sport if it goes over well and draws huge numbers.

What I don’t get is why you are countering an argument I made specifically for the “saving-my-65-bucks” crowd with an “it’s not about the money” counter-argument.

by Grease S. Pieces on Sep 2, 2011 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s exciting for me because I don’t have to spend any money to see that fight, and because the first fight on fox has a much better chance of being successful, and because it being successful means lots of good things for the sport and the fans.

I don’t know what I’m doing, but I, like many people in the world, don’t think 65 dollars for 3 hours of fighting is worthwhile`and order the card with a group when I think it is. They may actually be running the risk of increased expectations from fight fans. “You gave me JDS/Cain for free, why should I pay for Lesser fighter A vs. Lesser fighter B?” But really, I expect that this FOX fight, especially with its less than appealing one or two fight lineup, will do little to create a sustained increase in the fanbse.

Every time I glance at your name I see Dragon Ball Z, seriously.

Anderson Silva, Edson Barboza, Jose Aldo, Charles Oliveira, Thiago Alves = Muay Thai wrecking machines!

Haha I'm going to take that as a compliment. I grew up on DBZ.

With celebs? Sounds like a bad idea. Hopefully we get C-listers that know about MMA

Great idea actually

Its in LA on prime time network TV.

I’m sure there will be plenty of A-listers willing to get some camera time.

So one fight for an hour on Fox right before the Paciauo – Marquez fight. Me thinks prelims will be on another Fox Sports channel or on facebook. Red Carpet treatment? I don’t care who’s there cause it might be a bunch of people trying to be seen. If I see nicki Minaj in the audience, then this is officially mainstream which can be a double edged sword.

Bottom line: Cain vs JDS for free then Paciuao vs Marquez for free as long as I keep buyin jack and cokes and wings. I like it.

What, really? That’s strange.. I’m not logged in but I’ve been updating his twitter url several times and the latest tweet I can see if from 13 hours ago saying “And now I start the Wire.”

by Horselover Fat on Sep 2, 2011 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Wait, so I found out what was wrong. Just noticed the “20 new tweets” button. I don’t know why the hell it wouldn’t just show them to me without me seeing that button and clicking it, but yeah, sure enough there were some tweets hidden there. Damn.

haha happens to the best of us. I sat there for a few minutes and wondered what was taking so long before I noticed that.
