UFC Veteran Tito Ortiz Plays Role of Media, Questions Victor Ortiz at Post-Fight Presser

The media frenzy surrounding the controversial ending to the Floyd Mayweather vs. Victor Ortiz boxing bout this weekend has no bounds. Even mixed martial arts fighters are embracing media roles. Just ask UFC veteran Tito Ortiz. He decided to take the microphone this past weekend during the post-fight press conference to ask Victor Ortiz why he looked so bad (Source: FightHype):

Ortiz's previous stints on the other side of the sport as a commentator or interviewer didn't go well at all. Neither did this encounter. He essentially asked Victor if he would do anything different in a rematch because he saw "little small mistakes" with him "backing up and not really throwing punches off". While I'm sure Ortiz meant well with the question, it's difficult not to take the route of sarcasm and take jabs at the situation. Tito Ortiz said he saw Victor Ortiz making little mistakes... in a boxing match? Yep. He did.

I preface this by not having watched the video, but why is it wrong for Ortiz to make comments about boxing mistakes? Some of the best coaches had little to no success in the sport they coach, but they do know technique. Did I misundertand?

Imagine if Victor were pointing out mistakes in the way Tito Ortiz set up his takedowns these days… Not the least bit odd to you?

Josh Gross & Ariel Helwani point out mistakes all the time. Maybe they can double leg the shit out of stuff, but they always point out mistakes after a fight.

I'm not saying you have to participate in something to be knowledgeable about it.

I am saying that a high-level professional boxer probably doesn’t need criticism from an MMA fighter. Whoever trains Tito in boxing would have a much more deserved opinion.

A high-level professional boxer probably doesn’t need criticism from a English major either. My point is that you shouldn’t be on Tito for being a MMA fighter and asking a question, you should be on Tito for being bad in public speaking and having a huge head.

That’s true, except MMA involves boxing, boxing doesn’t involve take downs. Still though, he shouldn’t lecture a fighter who’s a much better puncher about his punching.

Tito Ortiz has a submission grappling background, with rudimentary standing striking.
Victor Ortiz has a professional boxing background, with rudimentary experience grappling.
Neither should be critiquing the other’s talents. That’s all I was trying to say.
If BJ or Anderson would have asked Victor a question like that, I wouldn’t have batted an eye.

Well, that is a little different

Boxing doesn’t have takedowns, so it’s unlikely Victor knows enough to critique Tito’s. There is boxing in MMA, and while Tito seems like a pretty basic boxer, he probably has accumulated quite a bit of technical know-how.

I don’t like it when any media attempts to ask a question that is based upon a perception they had about the event, such as “you made little mistakes backing up and not throwing off punches, how will you adjust that for the rematch”

There are some hockey commentators that drive me crazy with that style of journalism/reporting/broadcasting.

All these, uh, dealmakers making deals. Ya know, I don't, all I know is I'm ready to fight so, ya know, I'm sorry I didn't make it to the beauty pageant.

So Tito can’t ask Victor what he did wrong and point out what he thought to be mistakes because you think Tito’s a terrible striker,, but you believe you have the right to dismiss Tito and critique his ability as a striker? What are your striking accomplishments and abilities that put you above an “F- level” striker like Tito that give you the ability to bring legitimate discussion to the subject that you refuse to give him?

Tito knocked out Ryan Bader. Clearly he’s a elite level boxer.
Plus he trains at Kings MMA sparring with other super technical strikers like Mayhem Miller, Fabricio Werdum, and Mark Munoz

I don't know if you know this or not, but Tito Ortiz is primarily a wrestler.

His striking has been passable at best, his most noted moment being beating a flat footed, sad looking Ryan Bader with a punch that was so short I thought he was going to punch himself.

C’mon! The man was outstruck by Matt Hamil.

You know who else trains in Big Bear? Sugar Shane Mosley. You know who else used to train there? Oscar De La Hoya.

I wonder how many times Tito got to spar with those boxing greats, more or less even have a conversation with them.

Bottom line, Tito Ortiz pointing out Victor’s mistakes in boxing is just hilarious given the mistakes Tito has made in his stand up game.

by OptimusPiss on Sep 19, 2011 6:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Plus if it's not a pure boxing fight, it's irrelevant.

Since Tito had to worry about the takedown as well. I mean, imagine how different GSP-BJ 2 would have been if Penn never had to worry about being taken down? Not saying he’d win, but it’d be a completely different fight, that’s for sure.

Here we are with Seraldo Babalu, you did an awesome job, saw why you’re a black belt in jiu-jitsu, getting an awesome submission there, I want to tell me what you see, let’s go ahead and see by the fight, what you saw, in the ring
You showed the dominance by getting the takedown and looking for a choke in that position. We know the weakness that you had, but you actually showed the heart and determination of a champion of how tough of a light heavyweight you really are, here in the Affliction card. What do you think of the future of you, um, future opponents?
Yes, and uh, my back will be better in about three months, so I know all the fans would love to see me and you get it on. You know what, you’re an awesome fighter, congratulations tonight. Everybody lets give a hand to Renato Babalu, one of the greatest light heavyweights, of the night.

Haha!

You just have to laugh at this, classic Tito. Telling a boxer who just fought Floyd what he did wrong, man. To be honest Tito never seemed like a stupid guy to me, but when he’s on camera and on the mic, he’s just horrible. His last few guest-host spots with Inside MMA have been utterly cringeworthy all the way through. That man needs to be kept away from all sorts of media / journalist / announcer / tv-host type of gigs, it’s just not working, and he hasn’t gotten any better at it.

by Horselover Fat on Sep 19, 2011 6:17 PM EDT reply actions

Tito has more technical knowledge about boxing than probably anyone in here. His question was fine.

F level striking? Come on. He lost to guys like Evans and Liddell in his prime but he always stood well with guys like Forrest who have good striking. Is Tito a boxer? No. Was his question bad? No. Certainly nothing like his awful Affliction commentary.

by Urijah Bieber on Sep 19, 2011 7:03 PM EDT reply actions

Forrest does not have good striking. When he follows a gameplan that makes sense for his frame, it looks good, but it’s far from technically superior to that of most fighters with an average base.

Good enough to contend with LHW greats like Ortiz, Evans, Rampage, Rua in fights and be competitive.

Ortiz used to be counted as one of the new school guys with more rounded striking and ground skills before the Liddell fight colored people’s vision too much. F level striking is hyperbole.

No, this is just blatantly ignorant. Contend? I wouldn’t go that far at all.
