Mayweather vs. Ortiz: Oscar De La Hoya and Bob Arum Disappointed By Unsportsmanlike Behavior
The top two promoters in boxing, in Oscar De La Hoya and Bob Arum rarely get along, but aside from additional promoterspeak, their statements on the highly controversial Floyd Mayweather vs. Victor Ortiz bout are pretty similar. Disappointment.
Golden Boy Promotion's Oscar De La Hoya, who sort-of has Mayweather on his stable, finally commented on the situation on his twitter page. He says he will push for a rematch:
Ortiz took it to the street and Mayweather finished it in the street. Bad sportsmanship by Mayweather. ORTIZ was just warming up, a young lion does not deserve to go out like that and i will fight for Ortiz to have a rematch. But I feel Mayweather looked good and Ortiz looked good.
Terrible head butt by Ortiz and should have been deducted 2 points, but to win the way he won was not right. Ortiz deserves a rematch!!! ...And sorry to say but the ref. was lost as can be.
Top Rank's Bob Arum, who is Manny Pacquiao's promoter, says he's disgusted: (HT: BadLeftHook)
Whether it was legal or not legal, it was unsportsmanlike behavior [by Mayweather] and it was a cheap shot [by Mayweather]. I'm disgusted by what I saw.
For this kid to take off on Larry Merchant the way he did and use the language that he did - it was a disgrace.
[Ortiz] intentionally headbutted Mayweather. It is inexcusable, but he paid the penalty, which was the deduction of one point. That doesn't excuse unsportsmanlike behavior and throwing a cheap shot like Mayweather did. That's not something Pacquiao would do. That's not something that any of the fighters that I had in the eighties would do, like Leonard, Hearns and Hagler. It's just inexcusable behavior.
Obviously, with these two promoters, you have to take their statements with a grain of salt. Although not technically a Golden Boy Fighter, Mayweather has been working with/for De La Hoya for several fights now. Arum on the other hand, genuinely dislikes the guy, and would probably not have said the same had his Top Rank fighters been involved. That being said, and ignoring the added promotional-speak about his other fighters, I pretty much agree with what Arum said.
The punch was legal, but very unsportsmanlike, and I firmly believe that one disgraceful act shouldn't excuse another. Ortiz showed his inexperience by letting his emotions get the better of him on the heat of the moment. He threw a blatant headbutt that he got penalized for, and sure, part of the blame should be put on him, but Floyd should've been above that. Mayweather always boasts about how legendary a fighter he is, but he should've acted like one in the ring by being mature enough to not have that eye for an eye mentality.
Although this is Floyd Mayweather we are talking about, so while he should have been above it, I can't really say I was completely surprised that he wasn't.
After the jump, Arum talks about the referee, and addresses Mayweather's steroid allegations stemming from Manny Pacquiao's rise in weight.
Here's Arum's thoughts on Cortez, who got a bit of criticism during all the confusion in the ring:
Cortez, in my opinion, did a very poor job. When the foul came, he properly took a point away, and when the action continued he should have looked at both fighters and said 'fight.' He didn't do that. He was looking at the timekeeper apparently, and said 'time in.' But that is not communicating with an Ortiz. Do I think Cortez did a poor job? Yes I do.
On Mayweather claiming Pacquiao's weight gain is unnatural:
When they were both 16, they were both at the same weight, 105-pounds. Floyd was an amateur because he had the benefit of living in America, and Pacquiao was a professional because he was living on the streets of Manila. But they were both 105-pounds when they started at 16, you can look it up.
As always, do check out Bad Left Hook's more comprehensive coverage of the event.

Mayweather acted like a legendary fighter
by knocking out an inexperienced an emotional opponent in a moment of weakness and ineptitude. Legendary fighters see openings and exploit them and win.

be phony and pretend
what you say is true but this was different
pretend to accept an apology (afterall he could’ve put his hands up and walked back and shake his head no)…. make like you go up to him make like its okay, hug a little and tell him its okay
and then punch him…. real good sportsmanship sarcasm

Mayweather look like he did not want any part of that hug, this was NOT like when in mma two fighters put out there arms like there going to tap gloves and then one punches the guy.

This.
Floyd was blocking Ortiz’ hug with his forearms.. if Victor wasn’t so concerned with doing his best Care Bear impression, maybe he wouldn’t have been knocked out during the biggest fight of his career.

I don't get it.
If Floyd didn’t pretend to accept the hug, why did he approach Ortiz? Is the same fashion that Ortiz should’ve known to keep his hands up, Floyd should’ve known to remain in the corner until told otherwise. Floyd pretended and he knows it.
Because you have to approach a guy to exchange blows...
what are you expecting? Floyd running around a ring away from Ortiz’s hugs? They were told to continue. One person did…the other, kept acting like a moron.

Floyd...
approached Ortiz before Cortez said time.
And apparently...
Cortez was okay with this. So are we now expecting boxers to self regulate themselves middle of the ring?
So now, if anyone facing another boxer, keeps their hands low and just wants to hug it out, the opponent is supposed to just stand there like a moron too?

Cortez wasn't ok w/ it.
He fucked up and realized it was too late and instead of correcting it, he just let it go, thats not him being ok w/ it, its him covering his own ass for fucking up. He totally lost control of the fight and Floyd took advantage of it. I’m not saying Floyd is the only person to blame here but he didn’t make matters better by taking advantage of Cortez fuck up. So regardless of where or not Cortez was ok w/ this, Floyd made a dick move and he know’s it, thats why he went off on Merchant, because he know Larry was gonna put him on the spot.
Mayweather acted like a legendary fighter?
Sucker punching isn’t legendary around my parts. Even when I was in high school 10 years ago most people had the class to fight straight up man to man. Not wait to get someone off guard. Given it was legal. It was still a sucker punch. Guess not everyone grows up quite the same.

Given the head butt was BS
But like I said a sucker punch is a bitch move. Mayweather could of won without it.

I've said this before, I'll say it again-
Mayweather’s “sucker punch” wasn’t a bitch move; if anything, it was a dick move. The real bitch move in this situation is Ortiz flagrantly headbutting Floyd, and then acting like Barney the lovable dinosaur afterwards, trying to come across as the good guy.

I’m not a Mayweather fan. Never have been, nor ever will be, but I find no fault in how he handled it. Oritz pulled the first bitch move, which was completely illegal; Mayweather’s move may have been a bitch move, but at least it was legal and in retaliation. I’m not getting the Mayweather hate at all. Ortiz threw a flying headbutt lol, that shit’s illegal even in mma! Mayweather was emotional and upset due to Ortiz’ bullshit move. Ortiz should’ve kept his damn hands up anyways. He got clocked with a hook and just fucking stood there! Why the fuck if you’re a professional fighter would you just stand there after a guy punches you square in the face?
I also wouldn’t say that it was a cheap shot. Daley/Kos was a cheap shot due to Kos having his back turned. Ortiz was facing Mayweather. It’s not Floyd’s fault that Ortiz had a huge brain fart that night.

You know what Old timers would do to Ortiz if he head butted them like he did Floyd?

Interesting logic
My impression is that legendary fighters don’t have openings handed to them, but rather, create them. I don’t know why we can’t all agree that everyone in the ring acted like an idiot. Even worse, now there’s a real demand for a rematch, which takes the focus off the Pacquiao fight. Ortiz doesn’t stand a chance in a rematch (he was being outclassed as most of his flurries didn’t land). This fight should be forgotten, and most of all, Victor Ortiz: he had his chance, blew it with an idiotic move, but at least got his 2 million. Wake me up from his petty jive when Mayweather is fighting Pacman or Martinez.

Yes
the only way to observe that Ortiz was losing is explained by people being Mayweather “marks”. Mayweather is a slow starter, and if Ortiz was winning it was because Floyd wasn’t active. There’s simply nothing about Victor’s performance that makes me think he would have gotten better as the fight wore on (conversely, there’s plenty to indicate he would have slowed down).

Ill give credit where it is due: Floyd Mayweather has created a career through sheer force of will. For you BE fans who dont follow boxing, you may not be aware, Mayweather was a nobody for years. He couldnt draw fans TO HIS OWN HOME TOWN!! He constantly had to go to other fighters hometowns because he couldnt sell tickets on his own. His boring style has created a situation where he has never really had an interesting or compelling fight. As his career has gone on, he has never really faced a true welterweight in his prime, not a single time (his main chance was when Margarito offered him 8 million, and he turned it down…….repeat, he turned it down). However, the one thing Mayweather has going for him is this: the mainstream media doesnt pay any attention to boxing. Therefore, if you just SAY your a legend enough times, eventually the distracted sports media will just start taking your word for it. The truth is, hes barely a borderline Hall of Famer and would have gotten annihilated in under 5 rounds by Tommy Hearns. As far as Ortiz, why were we pretending this guy was ever good? Why, because Mayweather the promoter SAYS he is? this is a guy who was in a draw with Lamont Peterson 9 months ago, he sucks to begin with. The Sugar Rays, Hearns, Widfred Benitez’s, these guys wouldnt WANT to win that way. IS it legal? Sure. Is it a cheap shot bitch move? Yup.
Yup. That's why he left arum to begin with.
And here comes arum now, making comments and taking floyd’s behavior to the negotiating table. His comments are as meaningful as mine. He had no stake in that fight, he’s just going to hold it against Floyd and keep bringing it up when the topic of a fight with manny comes up.
I've stayed out of this because it seems like a pointless argument.
But I can’t believe how little people care about what Ortiz did, or when they do acknowledge it they rationalize it with the fact that he was deducted a point. I may not have watched that many boxing fights, but damn that was blatant. And if your rationale is that it’s okay because even though it wasn’t within the rules, he was punished… Well what Floyd did was within the rules, so apparently everyone is just mad because he can’t be punished for it. Let me simply, maturely say…. Waaahhhhh.

I think everyone is just quick to only condemn Floyd because he’s much easier to hate. I agree, they were both dumb things to do. But I think the vast majority of the blame for Floyd’s actions lies on the referee’s negligence.

I think it’s due to the finish. IF Ortiz had shattered Mayweather’s orbital bone with his forehead-to-face antics then everyone would be seriously attacking Ortiz, BUT since Mayweather was fine and his LEGAL antics brought him a tko finish, people are putting way more stock into that instead.

Arum shouldn’t be allowed to talk. Guy is ruining great fights for everyone by not letting Pacquiao go to 150 to fight Sergio Martinez, a guy who has been calling Manny out for a while now. Instead, we got Pacquiao against a bunch of guys who had no business being in the same ring as him. It’s pathetic. I just hate Arum. I really do. He annoys the crap out of me.
Bob Arum is a scumbag. He gets up in arms over this yet defended Margarito when he was caught with loaded gloves. Ridiculous.

You take out the “YOUR TWITTER URL HANDLE HERE” part and replace it with a “http://twitter.com/TWITNAME”, minus the quotation marks. You then change the last part to what your @ name would be. For me, it’s @FlyByKnite. So the code, for you, would look like the following.
<a href=" https://twitter.com/antontabuena " class=“twitter-follow-button”>Follow @antontabuena< /a>
Just close it all up. Take out the spaces between the URL and the quotation marks and remove the space between the “<” and “/a>” portion and you’ll be good to go.

That head-butt...
Man, Mayweather could have come across with a quick right elbow as Ortiz was head-butting him, and ended the fight right there… Should have grabbed the back of Ortiz’ head with his left glove and smashed his face with the hard right elbow. Fight fucking over.
Come at me, bro.
Anyone calling for a rematch is nuts. This fight was nowhere near close and everybody who was saying Victor was coming back are either major Ortiz marks, blind or downright retarded. This fight was nothing more than a glorified sparring session for Floyd.
It is a shame it ended like it did, because Ortiz would have been outta there in another round or two anyways giving everyone the chance to say how he didn’t deserve to be there and Floyd handpicks his opponents yada yada yada.
Bob Arum is just a grumpy, greedy old man and De La Hoya will be the first boxer to be in the hall of fame without beating a great opponent. What Floyd did was nowhere near as bad as things people such as Chael Sonnen, Rousimar Palhares, Gilbert Yvel, Thiago Silva, Renato Sobral etc have done.
EXACTLY!
Why would anyone want a rematch? Other than that single flurry leading up to the headbutt, Ortiz did shit.
And after that blatant illegal move, he lost the right to have his face punched in for next 8 or so rounds.

What Mayweather did, KO someone under questionable (to some) circumstances was shady at best. Not disgraceful.

I can’t defend Ortiz. I wanted him to win, I’ve been following the kid for awhile and this happened made me wanna smack fiyah out of him.
I didn’t see the ref let anyone know that the fight started. Then he turned to the timekeeper. It’s hard fo rme to sit here and beleive that Joe Cortez said something to restart the fight especially with the confusion. Mayweather took the oportunity and took him out. Honestly, they couldn’t have planned it better. It allows them to tie up a guaranteed fight, because of all the “controversy” probably will get more PPV, and i’m sure most boxing fans/press are completely ok with a rematch.
Obviously i’m not saying it was planned, just it’s prefect from a promoter and Mayweather pay day point of view. Let’s face it, Money isn’t know for being a “sports man”. Being the casual boxing fan that I am, don’t see this being big deal. It’s great that Mayweather gets to be a loud mouth and rough (take note Diaz, he still did the interview then immediately rebuffed it, creating massive hype for any potential next fight. )
Ortiz got what he deserved
that’s what happens when you blatantly throw illegal headbutts. And can we PLEASE stop with the Mayweather is ducking Manny bs? Didn’t Mayweather say that he’d gladly fight Manny as long as Manny signed up for Olympic style drug testing? Manny supposedly declined because they could take his blood up to two weeks before the fight and he felt that he’d be too weak to compete at his best :/ I’d think that 336 hours would be enough time for you to recover whatever blood that you lost during a blood test.

Mayweather did what most other boxers would have done...
…I box at a gym full of mostly amateurs with a few pros sprinkled on top. The general consensus is 1) What Floyd did was completely legit & 2)We would all do the same thing ourselves.
All of you guys who are commenting about ‘unsportsmanlike behaviour’ are obviously not familiar with a few of boxing’s maxims. In a fight, you fight fire with fire. If you get hit with an illegal blow, on numerous occasions, and the ref isn’t protecting you, you have to take matters into your own hands. It happens all the time in boxing. Also you are taught from the day you start sparring ‘PYAAT’.
Essentially you keep your hands up at all times and never take your eyes off your opponent. In throwing that blatant headbutt Ortiz must have known retribution in some form was coming, you could see in Floyd’s demeanor, in his eyes. He wasn’t a happy bunny.
At the end of the day Floyd did what most other boxers would do. He’s done it before (the Mosley fight) and given the chance he will do it again. It was legit and that is the end of the story.
Mayweather works with Golden Boy but not for. Mayweather put up the money and if the event is called off etc. he loses money.
On the other hand he also benefits from all money profited from the fight from international sale to even concession stand sales. He even cut himself the $25 million dollar paycheck for the fight
It was a cheap shot, Lets get over it.
Does Bob Arum know anything about the boxers that he promotes? Pacquiao has blatantly admitted in the past that he had put weights in his pockets to reach the 105lb limit when he was 16 so im not sure that argument made any sense whatsoever or helped reinforce anyone’s belief in the fact that Manny gained the weight naturally.
But like Anton said, Grain of salt.
