Anderson Silva: Mainstream Personality

"KISSES FROM THE FATTY"

Just last year, the majority of Brazilians would not know who Anderson Silva was, MMA never seemed like it would turn out to be something many Brazilians would appreciate. Sad was the state of the sport and its number one fighter, Anderson Silva, in the eyes of his countrymen.

With just one fight however, things changed practically overnight. Anderson Silva became a sensation in the Brazilian media, and as a result, it’s hard for you to find a Brazilian who is not familiar with his name. What a world of a difference can a single fight make. After the Belfort fight, Anderson has appeared in a lot of Brazilian TV shows that it was hard for me to keep count, and only after I read a piece stating each appearance did I come to realize that he’s probably the most appreciated mixed martial arts fighter in history (to their countrymen, at least).

I don’t think any other MMA fighter has made that many appearances on TV (US or otherwise) as has Anderson Silva in a short amount of time. After the Belfort fight, Anderson appeared in five TV shows, not just any TV shows, but very popular ones. Post Okami fight, Anderson appeared in nine popular TV programs, three in the same day, and already has his next appearance booked for this Saturday night. The camera loves the guy and he’s good in selling the sport.

He is already being compared to the likes of Pelé and Ayrton Senna, it’s a shame that it came so late in his career, but better late than never.
