Let's just hope
Inoki doesn’t try smacking Wanderlei in the face like he did to Lyoto…

What Menckenstein said, pretty much.
During one visit to a school in the 80’s, Inoki was punched twice by a student. Inoki slapped the student across the face, knocking him down. The student, who later turned out to be an Inoki fan, then rose, bowed deeply, and thanked Inoki for the slap. The incident became very famous as the then live clip of the binta (slap in the face) was shown many times on Japanese television. Now various celebrities and even common people in Japan ask Inoki to slap them to install courage or even as some sort of strange blessing. The slap’s name is the “Fighting Spirit (or Toukon) Slap.” (闘魂ビンタ)

After reading this, that is my new favorite GIF. Somebody needs to combine that gif or picture of the slap with “Lets Mutherfuckers”.

I'm reading Brock Lesnars book right now
and he mentions this in a chapter. Brock said he let Inoki know that there would be no slapping of his face :)
maybe thats why he doesnt react well to getting punched

If I remember right, that was post-fight. Lyoto had won his fight but hadn’t looked very good while doing it. Inoki had been personally cultivating Lyoto through his connections and this was supposed to be Lyoto’s big moment. Inoki was not pleased.
Lyoto was Inoki’s vision of the perfect fighter. Capable of being a work class MMA fighter, but also intended to be a world class pro-wrestler. It wasn’t until Lyoto broke ties to Inoki that his MMA career went anywhere.
But even though Inoki’s crazy as all hell, you can make the case that without Inoki scouting Lyoto and personally spending money to send Lyoto around the world getting the very best teaching he could afford, Lyoto would have never gotten where he is now.

All based on memory
So some minor details could be wrong.
Lyoto, a Brazilian/Japanese was supposed to be Inoki’s successor. Inoki had spent years in Brazil, so felt a natural connection. And since he believed he was the best fighter & pro-wrestler of his generation, Lyoto was supposed to be of this generation.
But Lyoto never caught on with the Japanese audience. And he really never went anywhere as either an MMA fighter or pro-wrestler until he broke off.
it is somewhat sad that for years Inoki cultivated fighters/wrestlers to follow in his example, but was always proven wrong. Guys like Fujita or Yasuda were never very good MMA fighters. But with Lyoto he finally found the guy who could do it, who then abandoned Inoki to further his own career.
Fujita was the closest, and was actually a very good MMA fighter. He was built up as the guy that would make the last stand against the “Pro-Wrestler Hunter”, Mirko Cro Cop. Cro Cop beating Fujita at Bom-Ba-Ye 2002 didn’t even really hurt him that bad, and Inoki used Fujita against a boxer in the main event of Bom-Ba-Ye 2003 (well, the main event for Japanese TV), the same card Machida fought Franklin on.

I always liked Fujita
As a fighter. He stunk as a pro-wrestler.
But despite all his efforts he just wasn’t able to live up to the ideal Inoki had. A lot of fans think that Fujita was a crappy fighter, but he wasn’t. He was far from elite, but he was a solid B level fighter who could give anyone in the HW division fits if you let him. If anything, constantly being under Inoki’s shadow and trying to live up to that mythical standing (lot of which is BS) held him back.
He did a hell of a lot better then guys like Tadao Yasuda, Kendo Ka Shin, Yuji Nagata, and Katsuyori Shibata though.
Definitely. I’m not sure anyone could live up to Inoki’s expectations though.

That’s the problem when you’re completely crazy and living in a delusional world.
We’ve seen time and time again that you can’t be a top of the line MMA fighter and do other things like pro-wrestling. But even to this very day, Inoki still believes it’s possible. Inoki Genome Federation’s entire purpose is to have freakshow pro-wrestling/MMA worked shoot matches that fulfill his philosophy.
It’s worth seeing Tim Sylvia do pro-wrestling at least once in your life though.

Inoki wants full time hybrids. Josh does one IGF show every two months.
He is about as close as you can come though.
Ah, okay. Yeah, I guess so. Either way, good info here my man.

I wouldn't call Fujita "very good",
but he was definitely quite good in his prime.

Is there really much of a difference between quite and very?
"You are a miserable human being." - Mike Fagan
My twitter: @TB_Money
I think so.
Someone who is quite good might be able to pick up a few wins over middling competition. Someone who’s very good beats those same guys impressively, on a consistent basis, and might even beat an elite opponent 1 out of every 10 times (and will be pretty competitive with most of the elite). An ELITE fighter will destroy middling competition, outclass very good fighters, and is someone who only loses to the top 10 of the division, and even then- no more than 50% of the time.
Of course these are my subjective guidelines, but that’s how I see it.
I like the lettered grading system Hawk uses too. Of course this is just a semantics debate, but I don’t think it’s fair to very good fighters to name Fujita among them. He was quite good.

so why did Machida break off from Inoki?
is there any place where I could read about that?
I’ve been overwhelmed and I’ve been underwhelmed. Can I ever just be whelmed?
I believe he left when Inoki’s business really started floundering and he went back to Brazil to fight for Jungle Fight again. Inoki had a long-standing relationship with K-1 that allowed Machida to fight on their MMA cards. He fought out of Inoki’s “office”, and trained with him and Kazayuki Fujita. He also worked with Wallid Ismail while he was in the US. He never fought in Pride because Inoki and them didn’t get along, and eventually Inoki’s relationship with K-1 soured as well, which led Lyoto back to South America, then North America as a founding member of Black House in late 2006.
Don’t quote me on all of that, and I’m honestly not sure where you could read about it. Sorry.

Silva in IGF would be the greatest thing ever.
I have a firm belief he’d be a better worked-fake-MMA-pro-wrestler-hybrid-thingy then Ray Sefo is.
Geez... talk about weird looking grins.
This looks like Aphex Twin was making a Wandy highlight vid
I suspect
Inoki is going to play a similar role to the German guy the UFC used.

I had a feeling he was going to participate in UFC Japan somehow, yeah.
Remember all those folks that said WEC lightweights simply wouldn't be able to hang in the UFC? Yeah.......

The thought of Wanderlei Silva stomping the original Tiger Mask unconscious is total win.
Seriously, IGF is the most insane wrestling federation ever created. Harry Smith! Mil Mascaras! Original Tiger Mask! Bobby Lashley! Bob Sapp! Vader! Kensuke Sasaki! Necro Butcher!
My avatar has Bas Rutten and Terry Funk in it...therefore it's the manliest avatar on SB Nation.
