Sure I'm excited about Jon Jones vs Rampage Jackson at UFC 135, but the fight I'm dying to see remains Jones vs Anderson Silva. Read it at MMA Nation.

I just can't fathom why.

Match-ups where a guy is going up in weight aren’t interesting if the guy with the size advantage also has a massive wrestling advantage. Jones would ragdoll Andy. Boo-urns.

What everyone needs to do is calm down, take a deep breath, and prepare their bodies for the Thunderdome.

by lowellthehammer on Sep 12, 2011 1:03 PM EDT reply actions

Probably.

Reach, size, strength. It wouldn’t be very pretty. I already get ill thinking about what he did to Shogun.

Jon Jones'

wrestling, reach, size and strength still wont be enough for Anderson’s skill.

by MaximumWatermelon on Sep 12, 2011 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah

that’s why Brock Lesnar vs JDS would be such an easy win for Brock.

1) Brock isn’t an amazing MMA wrestler, he’s a big strong guy with a decent double and lots of holes in his game. Jones is a hundred times the MMAist that Brock is.
2) JDS isn’t a LHW.
3) JDS is an excellent scrambler, whereas Anderson never has been.

What everyone needs to do is calm down, take a deep breath, and prepare their bodies for the Thunderdome.

JDS has very good TDD, Anderson does not

Getting taken down by Henderson, Chael, and…I guess Lutter doesn’t automatically mean that you have garbage tdd. Didn’t Okami manage to get Marquardt on his back? But he couldn’t do it to Andy and he tried.

Anderson Silva, Edson Barboza, Jose Aldo, Charles Oliveira, Thiago Alves = Muay Thai wrecking machines!

Silva has good TDD, and good wrestling in general.

I dont understand why people dont want to see this

Andy physically is a 205er. Jones isnt going to hw anytime soon. The size thing is just an excuse. It should happen and I would pick Silva for the same reason I think Machida gives bones issues.

by mortarz on Sep 12, 2011 1:14 PM EDT reply actions

What reason is that?

Couture is old, Tito is old and isn't much of an MMA wrestler these days,

and Rashad was only striking with him because he had the worst gameplan of all time.

What everyone needs to do is calm down, take a deep breath, and prepare their bodies for the Thunderdome.

by lowellthehammer on Sep 12, 2011 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Saying he has a propensity for destroying wrestlers is a bit disingenuous though.

He beat two old wrestlers and a wrestler that didn’t shoot on him once.

What everyone needs to do is calm down, take a deep breath, and prepare their bodies for the Thunderdome.

by lowellthehammer on Sep 12, 2011 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Sure

But I do think that on paper he looks like a great anti-wrestler. With his great sense of spacing, good clinch work, and hips.

Uhgreed.

I like a Machida/Jones match-up.

What everyone needs to do is calm down, take a deep breath, and prepare their bodies for the Thunderdome.

by lowellthehammer on Sep 12, 2011 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Tito wasnt nearly as washed up then

Rashad was striking because Machidas known take down defense.

by mortarz on Sep 12, 2011 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes. Yes he was.

Hell that was before he had surgery so he might have been worse at that time than he is now.

spinal fusion surgery is a preventative one

Your worse for getting it but long term prevents further complications. It isnt an knee scope.

by mortarz on Sep 12, 2011 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I kind of disagree with both points there

Rashad was striking because he and Winklejohn fell in love with his knockout power after the Chuck fight. Not because he was afraid he couldn’t take him down or anything. People aren’t usually afraid they can’t land a takedown so they choose to not try and get knocked out instead.

And Tito wasn’t completely shot like he is now, but he was well past his best.

I agree with this point

But i do think Machidas rep preceded him

Since when Silva has shown a propensity for absolutely destroying wrestlers?

Besides Okami, Hendo

And the one time he fought Chael with a broke rib.

by mortarz on Sep 12, 2011 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

With the exception of the Okami fight (which was pretty much zero percent contested on the ground), none of those fights had Anderson Silva “destroying” anyone.

Let alone "absolutely destroying" them.

Sonnen gave Anderson fits and Henderson took that first round.

He destroyed Hendo.

Clinging to your opponent for a round does not mean you are competitive with him.

What everyone needs to do is calm down, take a deep breath, and prepare their bodies for the Thunderdome.

by lowellthehammer on Sep 12, 2011 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I never said it was a good first round.

But Hendo managed to take him down and cling to him and not get “absolutely destroyed”. If Hendo can do that much, I’d imagine (yeah, conjecture!) that Bones could do the same, but worse.

lol wut

He made Hendo eat leather. Probably would of tko’d him but het fancy. Okami, Hendo, Chael are the 3 best wrestlers by far in that division.

by mortarz on Sep 12, 2011 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Chael is a great wrestler, the other two are not.

Says more about the MW division than those fighters.

What everyone needs to do is calm down, take a deep breath, and prepare their bodies for the Thunderdome.

by lowellthehammer on Sep 12, 2011 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Hendo is a decorated olympic wrestler

And wrestled as a national champion as late as 2000. Thats not a skill you forget and Chael was roided as hell.

by mortarz on Sep 12, 2011 2:02 PM EDT up reply actions

The weirdest thing about Hendo

Is that he’s a wrestler, and a good one too. An animal in the clinch. But the way you beat him is by taking him down. The Shields fight wasn’t even close for four rounds. Lawal is by all indications a worse fighter than Henderson, but if Lawal fought Hendo he would fucking murder him.

Its revolves around his gameplan

if he respects ur striking like Page, Feijao Silva he will put that greco to good use. He just came with ahorrible plan for jake and bad condition.

by mortarz on Sep 12, 2011 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

At this stage of his career Hendo is a brawler, not really a wrestler.

I mean he has credentials but his MMA wrestling is nothing to write home about. Okami’s grappling is good but his offensive wrestling game has never, ever been impressive. Chael is an amazing wrestler.

What everyone needs to do is calm down, take a deep breath, and prepare their bodies for the Thunderdome.

If Anderson has a weakness

It’s definitely wrestling.

Its Hendo's gameplan

If he respects a striker he will use his weestling. Rampage, silva, and Feijao he put the clinch game and throws to great use. His top game isnt devastating like Chael tho. I think he completely underestimated Shields tho.

by mortarz on Sep 12, 2011 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s not just size. It’s Jones’ size combined with his amazing wrestling and ground game that makes this match-up uninteresting. It’s be one thing if Silva had great, or even very good TDD, but he does not. Against a guy like Jones, it’s not even a question of where this fight ends up.

I don't think Andy's ever fought at a reach disadvantage.

Let alone a 6" reach disadvantage. That means this stuff goes right out the window.

Barboza had 6 inch reach advantage over Pearson, and Ross still managed to outstrike him (outland, at least). Consider that Jones isn’t the striker Pearson is and Silva is a lot better than Barboza.

I'm not saying that reach is everything.

It just seems to me like a lot of Anderson’s game is built on having a reach advantage. Add to that the fact that if Anderson gets inside Jones’s reach, he still has the clinch takedowns to worry about.

His game is mostly base on distance and timing. It’s not like he jabs people a’la Klitschko.
Check out how he closes the distance a lot greater than his reach, by extending his whole body (it sounds stupid, but I don’t have the right words at the moment)

Also take into consideration that Jake O’Brien was landing jabs and hooks on Jones (Jones improved since then, but still…)

Jones put his hand on Shogun’s head like he was a little kid trying to grab some candy from him. I think Andy would get destroyed. His guard is overrated and Jones would destroy his face with elbows.

fact is Bones will be that much bigger than everyone he faces

That is no reason to not make a fight when the spider has the best combined talent and size of any potential bones opponent.

Nonsense.

Cain Velasquez.

Obviously at this point thats not going to happen

Bones needs to clean out 205 first. He has a long way.

Cain qualifies as “any potential bones opponent” in my book.

Anderson is such an incredible sniper that he has a chance against anyone but Jones using his wrestling to crush him is the the most likely result. I like both guys and despite the appeal of the fight it’s not one I want to see.

can we please

let this guy defend his title first jesus christ

same shit with machida

oh man machida vs silva would be epic

machida is undefeated never lost a round never been dropped etc, etc, etc,

won a fight everyone said he lost and then got put to sleep in rmeatch

Jones is a wild striker but that’s not to say that he doesn’t use any skills or tactics. It’s just that his long reach gives him an amazing advantage and lets him get away with strikes like that by being able to keep distance with those long limbs. I think if Jones didn’t have such a reach advantage, he wouldn’t be as wild or as daring as he is now, striking wise anyway because he would be countered much more often and harder as well. I’m sure he’d still be a great wrestler though.

by ultima0chaotic on Sep 12, 2011 2:43 PM EDT reply actions

i still want

gsp v. silva

and i believe if gsp wins the condit fight, it will happen. gsp knows he’s a unanimous #2 in the p4p polls and he’ll call him out. i think he’s been planning it for a while – that’s why nate marquardt moved down to ww.

i don’t have a real problem with jones v. silva but there is as much, if not more, of a size issue than with gsp and silva. and jones has a lot more work to do at LHW than GSP does at WW.
