UFC 139 Fight Card Shaping Up

Photo

The UFC 139 card was expected to feature a UFC heavyweight title matchup between Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos, but that bout was moved up a week onto the UFC on Fox card. Instead, the UFC has decided to go with a main event featuring Vitor Belfort and former Strikeforce middleweight champion Cung Le. And yes, it has been confirmed that it will be the main event. Le is a local San Jose legend that is a huge draw in the city, but it's still a bit of a head-scratcher to say the least. The co-main will be a de-facto number 1 contender's matchup at bantamweight with Urijah Faber taking on Brian Bowles. In addition to the seven bouts announced so far, it is expected that Jon Fitch will compete on this card as well, though an opponent hasn't been decided as of yet.

Nov 19th, live on pay-per-view from San Jose, CA:

Vitor Belfort (20-9) vs. Cung Le (7-1)

Brian Bowles (10-1) vs. Urijah Faber (25-5)

Martin Kampmann (17-5) vs. Rick Story (13-4)

Ryan Bader (12-2) vs. Jason Brilz (18-4-1)

Stephan Bonnar (13-7) vs. Kyle Kingsbury (11-1, 1 NC)

Rafael dos Anjos (15-5) vs. Gleison Tibau (23-7)

Tom Lawlor (7-3, 1 NC) vs. Chris Weidman (6-0)

Not a great Main Event,

but the card seems to be really deep

not a bad main event should be a good stand up war and faber vs bowles should be a good scrap.

Watching his sanshou replays on ESPN was great!

Having said that, he is even older than Vitor, and he’s going to get shut off.

No doubt, but Cung is 40 and Vitor is only 33. That is a world of difference in the MMA game minus HGH, lol.

This is an odd choice for a main event.

If you were to line up 20 MMA fans and asked each one of them who Vitor is my guess is that at least 95-100% of them would know who he is. Now if you ask those same people who Cung Le is they will then ask you “Who is Cung Le?” I dont see this card selling more then 250-275,000 PPV buys.

1) Junior v. Cain got pulled.
2) Lesnar v. Overeem got announced. My mother, who loves Brock Lesnar more than I do, said she was going to take me for Christmas.

Everyone seems to be missing something

San Jose and the Bay in general is an absolute hotbed of MMA. Tons of fight camps past and present have been here, and the fans are extremely passionate and knowledgeable.

You could have an MMA card of me vs. some guy off the street, and chances are it will sell out if it’s held in San Jose or Oakland. If not a sell out, at least come close.

So saying “Oh that’s smart; Cung’s from San Jose” makes no sense. People here were coming anyway – so why give us a lackluster main event?

Let me clarify (kinda drunk from teh footballs)

Making Cung the main event and then justifying it with “well he’s from San Jose so it will sell well” doesn’t fly, because ANY main event will sell well. So making Cung the main event is just a shitty move.

Like Matt said below, it’s like England – it’s gonna sell out no matter what. So give me Cain/JDS back plz.

that

and the fact that he was massively overrated.

Still, could you imagine him KOing Vitor and the we get the dream fight vs Silva????

Ya, me either.

by BJJDenver on Sep 11, 2011 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think he was overrated at all

Unless you come from the philosophy you can only be “rated” if you beat top ranked guys. Cung never made it high up into the rankings. I prefer to judge fighters based on their skills, and this guy obviously has some of the most advanced and deceptive stand up anywhere in MMA. And great wrestling. If Le were younger he’d be a championship caliber prospect and in actuality still might be.

You can be wrong if you want, lol.

by BJJDenver on Sep 11, 2011 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions

What do you disagree with?

Ever watched him fight and seen the skills he has?

by Urijah Bieber on Sep 11, 2011 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Does he have skills? Yes. Would he get wrecked in the UFC? Yes. Was he overrated in SF and then lose to a middle of the road at best fighter? Yes. Will he probably get KTFO here? Yes, probably.

I’ve watched most of his fights and some of his san shou. He looked very good against lower level competition. He was feed guys he should beat so he could be a SF/San Jose posterboy.

Not saying I dislike him or he is terrible, simply that he is overrated, started MMA to late and now is coming off a film making layoff that may not end well for him. Being overrated doesn’t mean you are bad, I’m simply more realistic and I’m not going to go crazy for some fancy striker that hasn’t fought high level opponents for a sustained period. And please, don’t give me Frank Shamrock.

I think it's an interesting fight.

If Cung survives the dreaded Vitor blitz in the first I give him a good shot at the upset. Pretty big if though.

What everyone needs to do is calm down, take a deep breath, and prepare their bodies for the Thunderdome.

Agreed

Cung Le has the offensive weapons, his power hasn’t ebbed, but will he show up as a Liddell 40 year old or a Hendo 40?

by Dootch on Sep 11, 2011 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

He has the defense too.

I think he can continually make Vitor miss, hit him with shots he doesn’t see coming, and either make Vitor quit or cruise to a decision. I know Le looked bad suddenly in the last round of a fight he was totally dominating, but Vitor never looks good late in fights.

by Urijah Bieber on Sep 11, 2011 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions

i agree

everyone is sleeping on le here.

all they say is “he lost to scott smith.” yes, he lost to him, after dominating the first two rounds, and then he won the rematch. the man is basically undefeated. has he fought anyone as good as vitor before? maybe not, certainly not for 2-3 years. but still, it’s weird to say he has “no chance”, so little chance that everyone actively hates the fight, about a guy with legit skills and a great record.

and really, cung le is 39 years old. he’s been fighting cans a long time and he fights once every 16 months. how slow and easy do you want to take it with him? he’s had his whole life to get ready for this moment. he SHOULD be thrown in the deep end. if he wins, they can give him the “super” fight with silva. if he loses, well, so what? he’ll go act in shitty movies, or then he’ll take a money fight against alan belcher or something.

this might not be the greatest headliner for a ppv, but it’s a great fight.

Clearly the main event is a stand and banger to draw people in

As far as title relevance, the REAL main event is Faber-Bowles.

But I don’t care, I’m always glad to see a FW or BW fight on ANY main card for ANY reason. Progress is progress.

I really hope Bowles drops the farmhand on Faber though, Mike Brown style and just ends him. I’m much more interested in Bowles vs Cruz 2 then Faber vs Cruz 3.

Imagine, with the big power Bowles has for the division, if he could time Cruz and catch him coming in…it could be a very interesting fight.

Very solid card top-to-bottom though. I hope Kingsbury and Wiedman can keep their streaks going.

Yeah, and it's a shame

I personally scored the Shields fight for Shields, but although I can see a case MAYBE for Diego in that fight, I really thought Kampmann should have got the decision.

Either way, both fights were very close, and it sucks that in two close fights he didn’t catch a break either time.

For that, I really hope he wins. Plus, the slight hope that Condit becomes champ and Kampmann works his way to a title shot for a rematch between the two…it would be awesome. 5 rounds of those two would be good, the first fight was a classic.

Not because it’s a more important fight or because it’s a better draw but because I want to see them go five rounds, if it comes to that.

In what way is he a proven commodity?

The only big selling PPV Vitor has been a part of was 126 where he lost to Anderson on a star studded card.

Vitor’s drawing power, much like his actual competitive career, is largely a myth.

by elmojo on Sep 11, 2011 10:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Guess what

I promise you that wasn’t because of Vitor.

Anderson Silva, Rich Franklin, Forrest Griffin and TUF winner Ryan Bader all had a higher profile with American PPV buyers at the time than Vitor Belfort who hadn’t fought in a year and a half and had been off UFC television for years before that.

So much like his perceived “elite” status as a fighter, Belfort’s chops as a draw, at least in terms of selling PPVs in America, are extremely overrated.

I agree

Comparing Faber’s pull to Vitor’s pull is kind of ridiculous, Vitor is a casual fan favourite, even to the point of frustrating Anderson Silva, he stated several times that Vitor was more popular than him in even Brazil before their fight.

Faber’s stardom was in WEC, not everyone watched WEC and after a loss to Cruz and title aspirations basically dwindling he hit his popularity peak ages ago.

by elmojo on Sep 11, 2011 11:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Vitor's popularity in Brazil

Does not translate to PPV buys in America. There is zero evidence that suggests that Vitor moves the dial with American PPV consumers.

but dude is a gate keeper and nothing more. A high level gate keeper sure, but he will never string together enough fights to be a real contender.

He is a good fighter but people love to drop the caveat with him “if he would fight smart….” and he just won’t and never will.

If he loses this fight, which he very well might, he is on a 3 fight losing streak and will be .500 in the WW division. That isn’t relevant that is a gate keeper

There’s maybe one other unlikely possibility here. If there was ever a time to yank Gilbert Melendez from his fight with Masvidal and flip him to the UFC, it would be for this event. He’s fought tons of times in San Jose before and would be a big name to the card, could even fill a vacant main event slot.

I love the fight even though on paper it appears as a mismatch, but regardless expect fireworks.

I think that Shields and Fitch will be on this card unless the injury news is true. Plus i expect a few people on current cards to fight. If Kos peforms well he could be on the card. Machida if not hurt might find a way on the card. Davis needs an opponent. We will see, card is still a long ways away. Don’t know why they made the NOV 12th cards a full card…should of put the Main event and 5 prelims for Facebook and left the Guida Bendo fight for 139.
