UFC 139 Fight Card Shaping Up
The UFC 139 card was expected to feature a UFC heavyweight title matchup between Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos, but that bout was moved up a week onto the UFC on Fox card. Instead, the UFC has decided to go with a main event featuring Vitor Belfort and former Strikeforce middleweight champion Cung Le. And yes, it has been confirmed that it will be the main event. Le is a local San Jose legend that is a huge draw in the city, but it's still a bit of a head-scratcher to say the least. The co-main will be a de-facto number 1 contender's matchup at bantamweight with Urijah Faber taking on Brian Bowles. In addition to the seven bouts announced so far, it is expected that Jon Fitch will compete on this card as well, though an opponent hasn't been decided as of yet.
Nov 19th, live on pay-per-view from San Jose, CA:
Vitor Belfort (20-9) vs. Cung Le (7-1)

Watching his sanshou replays on ESPN was great!
Having said that, he is even older than Vitor, and he’s going to get shut off.

No doubt, but Cung is 40 and Vitor is only 33. That is a world of difference in the MMA game minus HGH, lol.
Cung’s 39, Vitor’s 34. Not that it makes much difference.

Ugh.

Fucking christ
Someone repost my earlier comment about UFC 139 being like that vacation/raise analogy.
Based on what this card was supposed to be, I want to take the current version of 139 out back and shoot it in the throat.
Cung Le Main Event? Bader/Brilz? The not-as-good guy from the most overrated fight in history?
BOOSH
This is an odd choice for a main event.
If you were to line up 20 MMA fans and asked each one of them who Vitor is my guess is that at least 95-100% of them would know who he is. Now if you ask those same people who Cung Le is they will then ask you “Who is Cung Le?” I dont see this card selling more then 250-275,000 PPV buys.

1) Junior v. Cain got pulled.
2) Lesnar v. Overeem got announced. My mother, who loves Brock Lesnar more than I do, said she was going to take me for Christmas.

Clearly the UFC is testing how PPV buys will work
By advertising this card heavily on FOX.
I respect your opinion even though it's wrong.
Everyone seems to be missing something
San Jose and the Bay in general is an absolute hotbed of MMA. Tons of fight camps past and present have been here, and the fans are extremely passionate and knowledgeable.
You could have an MMA card of me vs. some guy off the street, and chances are it will sell out if it’s held in San Jose or Oakland. If not a sell out, at least come close.
So saying “Oh that’s smart; Cung’s from San Jose” makes no sense. People here were coming anyway – so why give us a lackluster main event?
BOOSH
Let me clarify (kinda drunk from teh footballs)
Making Cung the main event and then justifying it with “well he’s from San Jose so it will sell well” doesn’t fly, because ANY main event will sell well. So making Cung the main event is just a shitty move.
Like Matt said below, it’s like England – it’s gonna sell out no matter what. So give me Cain/JDS back plz.
BOOSH
I think it's pretty obvious they want to give San Jose some San Jose dudes
It’s why Cain was on this card in the first place.

The difference is guys like Cain, Fitch, Shields...
They are all without a doubt near or at the top of their divisions. Cung, while I don’t think he is going to get squashed against Vitor like most, is nowhere near the top of 185.
BOOSH
But it's the kind of thing where
Cung is well respected in so many circles, where it would be weird if a guy like Urijah (who’s also really high profile in the bay area and Northern California) headlined over him when Cung was fighting a guy with as big of a name as Vitor.

This is a great card
To put on free TV. But as a ppv? At least they’ll get a packed house in San Jose with Cung Le and Urijah and we’ll get some immediate results as to how well the Fox deal is paying off.
Also can’t believe that since Diaz was bounces from the GSP fight they didn’t book Shields vs Fitch and Koscheck vs Diaz for a Gracie vs AKA night.
I would imagine

Quit yer bitchin'!!
lol, seriously though, who cares what the main event is? The only real bearing it has is for the UFC and how they market it. We aren’t the casual fans that only half know the main event guys and that is who we buy the card for. This is a very good card and I much prefer that to some crap card with a high profile ME.
And damn, RDA vs Gleison should be freakin’ awesome!
PS Yes, Vitor is going to destroy Cung in that crappy main event!
Top three fights are pretty good
and then the card quality just plummets into the abyss.
What everyone needs to do is calm down, take a deep breath, and prepare their bodies for the Thunderdome.
by lowellthehammer on Sep 11, 2011 8:56 PM EDT reply actions
The main event only sucks because of Cung's lay off giving legitimate questions on top of the fact no one seems to have a fucking clue how good this guy really is standing
He rarely gets hit standing and has a very high level MMA oriented game already. Cung is very live in this fight.
that
and the fact that he was massively overrated.
Still, could you imagine him KOing Vitor and the we get the dream fight vs Silva????
Ya, me either.
I don't think he was overrated at all
Unless you come from the philosophy you can only be “rated” if you beat top ranked guys. Cung never made it high up into the rankings. I prefer to judge fighters based on their skills, and this guy obviously has some of the most advanced and deceptive stand up anywhere in MMA. And great wrestling. If Le were younger he’d be a championship caliber prospect and in actuality still might be.

What do you disagree with?
Ever watched him fight and seen the skills he has?
by Urijah Bieber on Sep 11, 2011 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions
Does he have skills? Yes. Would he get wrecked in the UFC? Yes. Was he overrated in SF and then lose to a middle of the road at best fighter? Yes. Will he probably get KTFO here? Yes, probably.
I’ve watched most of his fights and some of his san shou. He looked very good against lower level competition. He was feed guys he should beat so he could be a SF/San Jose posterboy.
Not saying I dislike him or he is terrible, simply that he is overrated, started MMA to late and now is coming off a film making layoff that may not end well for him. Being overrated doesn’t mean you are bad, I’m simply more realistic and I’m not going to go crazy for some fancy striker that hasn’t fought high level opponents for a sustained period. And please, don’t give me Frank Shamrock.
And please, don’t give me Frank Shamrock.

Agreed
Cung Le has the offensive weapons, his power hasn’t ebbed, but will he show up as a Liddell 40 year old or a Hendo 40?
He has the defense too.
I think he can continually make Vitor miss, hit him with shots he doesn’t see coming, and either make Vitor quit or cruise to a decision. I know Le looked bad suddenly in the last round of a fight he was totally dominating, but Vitor never looks good late in fights.
by Urijah Bieber on Sep 11, 2011 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions
i agree
everyone is sleeping on le here.
all they say is “he lost to scott smith.” yes, he lost to him, after dominating the first two rounds, and then he won the rematch. the man is basically undefeated. has he fought anyone as good as vitor before? maybe not, certainly not for 2-3 years. but still, it’s weird to say he has “no chance”, so little chance that everyone actively hates the fight, about a guy with legit skills and a great record.
and really, cung le is 39 years old. he’s been fighting cans a long time and he fights once every 16 months. how slow and easy do you want to take it with him? he’s had his whole life to get ready for this moment. he SHOULD be thrown in the deep end. if he wins, they can give him the “super” fight with silva. if he loses, well, so what? he’ll go act in shitty movies, or then he’ll take a money fight against alan belcher or something.
this might not be the greatest headliner for a ppv, but it’s a great fight.
Yeah, but
Vitor is such a picture of dedicated, consistent excellence that…

Ugh I was going to attend this one
Guess I got spoiled thinking Cain JDS was going to remain the main event…
WAR Chris Lytle!
Tibau vs Dos Anjos is the sleeper here
I hope it isn’t buried in the prelims
Head conductor of the Charles Oliveira hype train.
Clearly the main event is a stand and banger to draw people in
As far as title relevance, the REAL main event is Faber-Bowles.
But I don’t care, I’m always glad to see a FW or BW fight on ANY main card for ANY reason. Progress is progress.
I really hope Bowles drops the farmhand on Faber though, Mike Brown style and just ends him. I’m much more interested in Bowles vs Cruz 2 then Faber vs Cruz 3.
Imagine, with the big power Bowles has for the division, if he could time Cruz and catch him coming in…it could be a very interesting fight.
Very solid card top-to-bottom though. I hope Kingsbury and Wiedman can keep their streaks going.

Wish they wouldn't match up Kampmann and Story
If Kampmann loses I think even with his 2 BS decisions the UFC would cut him
I respect your opinion even though it's wrong.

Yeah, and it's a shame
I personally scored the Shields fight for Shields, but although I can see a case MAYBE for Diego in that fight, I really thought Kampmann should have got the decision.
Either way, both fights were very close, and it sucks that in two close fights he didn’t catch a break either time.
For that, I really hope he wins. Plus, the slight hope that Condit becomes champ and Kampmann works his way to a title shot for a rematch between the two…it would be awesome. 5 rounds of those two would be good, the first fight was a classic.

No way. Even though he lost, his last fight with Sanchez amazed Dana to the point that he gave him an extra $100K on top of the FOTN bonus. He’s safe even with a loss to Story.

They ought to make Bowles/Faber the main event
Not because it’s a more important fight or because it’s a better draw but because I want to see them go five rounds, if it comes to that.
Impressive way to have another 300k buy PPV
I respect your opinion even though it's wrong.

That was Faber fighting for the title.

Faber did 300k headlining
With a belt on the line. Am I missing something? Is that number wrong?
I’m saying without that belt on the line Faber is going to sell a lot less than 300 k.

Belfort\Le
Ain’t gonna move the needle any better. Let’s at least have the better fight be the 5 rounder.

Vitor is a proven ppv commodity
Not a great one, but his track record is better than Faber’s.

In what way is he a proven commodity?
The only big selling PPV Vitor has been a part of was 126 where he lost to Anderson on a star studded card.
Vitor’s drawing power, much like his actual competitive career, is largely a myth.
"My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we'll change the world."

Well one things for sure
he lost alot of that luster when he got kicked to the face
no matter this card could use a heavy name to co headline it
One of Anderson's best selling cards.

Guess what
I promise you that wasn’t because of Vitor.
Anderson Silva, Rich Franklin, Forrest Griffin and TUF winner Ryan Bader all had a higher profile with American PPV buyers at the time than Vitor Belfort who hadn’t fought in a year and a half and had been off UFC television for years before that.
So much like his perceived “elite” status as a fighter, Belfort’s chops as a draw, at least in terms of selling PPVs in America, are extremely overrated.

Saying it's overrated
And that it’s less than Urijah Faber’s draw are two very different things.
If you go back to what I originally said, I said that Vitor was not a “great” pay per view draw. Urijah isn’t even a good one.

I would disagree
Seems at least on par with Vitor following the surprising success of both his fight with Dominick Cruz and the lone WEC PPV.
"My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we'll change the world."
- Jack Layton
There was never a WEC PPV.
That was Aldo Versus Faber in The Promotion.
"Someone is WRONG on the internet. What do you want me to do? LEAVE? Then they'll keep being wrong!"
-Randall Munroe
I agree
Comparing Faber’s pull to Vitor’s pull is kind of ridiculous, Vitor is a casual fan favourite, even to the point of frustrating Anderson Silva, he stated several times that Vitor was more popular than him in even Brazil before their fight.
Faber’s stardom was in WEC, not everyone watched WEC and after a loss to Cruz and title aspirations basically dwindling he hit his popularity peak ages ago.
Vitor's popularity in Brazil
Does not translate to PPV buys in America. There is zero evidence that suggests that Vitor moves the dial with American PPV consumers.

That sucked.

Weird fight..
Next up the UFC will give Vitor DHK at catch weight just to continue the random streak of non relevant asian opponents
this card blows
assuming the top five fights listed are the main card we have…
slaughter
good
meh and kampman is irrelevant
irrelevant
very irrelavant
this is the sort of card that should be free. this card is not worth 50 bucks…

people love kampmann on here
but dude is a gate keeper and nothing more. A high level gate keeper sure, but he will never string together enough fights to be a real contender.
He is a good fighter but people love to drop the caveat with him “if he would fight smart….” and he just won’t and never will.
If he loses this fight, which he very well might, he is on a 3 fight losing streak and will be .500 in the WW division. That isn’t relevant that is a gate keeper

Kampmann could be switched out with literally 10 other guys in the welterweight division and the quality of that Rick Story fight wouldn’t be affected.

Irrelevant?
he beat the living shit out of Diego Sanchez and got screwed over by the judges and lost a close fight to Jake Shields.
your analysis of the card is irrelevant it seems.

There’s maybe one other unlikely possibility here. If there was ever a time to yank Gilbert Melendez from his fight with Masvidal and flip him to the UFC, it would be for this event. He’s fought tons of times in San Jose before and would be a big name to the card, could even fill a vacant main event slot.
The UFC has enough of a logjam at the top of LW
Adding Gilbert at this juncture only complicates things.

well at least we get a nice free card the week before, so we can’t complain too much. we should have known that this card was going to be something like this.
I wish they’d move penn / diaz from the october card to this and make it the main event so that can be five rounds.
Yeah, Diaz can hype a main eve...
Oh, wait :/

Lawlor best hope for another injury..
Or else Weidman will school him IMO..
Then it could be cut time for Filthy Tom.
Which is too bad
Because Lawlor is fun to have around. I hope he gets some slack. Maybe guys will get more lenience with the addition of Fox cards or something..

Yeh, its hard not to like his antics..
And i’ll always like him for choking out CB Dollaway at UFC 100..
But his fighting itself isn’t that entertaining.

Ouch
Card has some interesting fights but the main and co-main are unimpressive to me.
you dont like Faber/Bowles?
Faber tends to have good fights, and Bowles is an interesting challenge

How does it blow?
It’s exactly like UFC 132…All fights that will produce fireworks. Vitor vs Le will be some type of KO. Bonnar and Kingsbury is FOTN!!! Faber Bowles will be awesome. Kampman vs Story will be interesting. The card is 2 months away, still tons of work to do and i doubt Le Vitor is the ME
Good Card
this looks to be a good card
lots of competitve bouts
except cung le has just about a snowball’s chance of winning tho
and
Faber’s bout is the only one with real immediate impact on standings or such
the winner of Kampmann-Story ought to be put right back into deep water
the winners of Bader-Britz and Bonnar-Kingsbury should be matched with each other next
but well matched fights that should be interesting and fun to see
Not sure how well these will sell though
Kyle Kingsbury looks like Randy in a Brian Bowles wig

Cung Le Vitor won't headline
I love the fight even though on paper it appears as a mismatch, but regardless expect fireworks.
I think that Shields and Fitch will be on this card unless the injury news is true. Plus i expect a few people on current cards to fight. If Kos peforms well he could be on the card. Machida if not hurt might find a way on the card. Davis needs an opponent. We will see, card is still a long ways away. Don’t know why they made the NOV 12th cards a full card…should of put the Main event and 5 prelims for Facebook and left the Guida Bendo fight for 139. We will see but i seriosly doubt Vitor Belfort headlines a UFC card ever again as well as Le.
