At 5:39 PM Eastern Time, the UFC sent out a press release advising members of the media that tomorrow UFC President Dana White will be hosting a conference call to make a huge announcement. No other informant was given as to what the call could be about and since receiving this email, speculation has run rampant on Twitter. The call be be taking place at 1pm Eastern Time and I'm sure Mike Fagan will be live tweeting notes that will be updated on this very website.
Dana wanted to either kill or build the speculation when he sent the following tweet:
The "BIG Announcement" 2 morrow at 10 am will be the FOX fight. The UFC and FOX are so pumped for @UFCONFOXSports!!!!!!!!
Does anyone have any guesses as to who could possibly be headlining the UFC's first card on FOX? For the UFC to host a Media Call, it has to be a huge main event. Let's take a look at the options...
Vitor Belfort vs Chris Leben: This fight has been rumored to be the main event for a while. Jeremy Botter from Heavy.com tweeted last night that he confirmed it wasn't happening but it could be a red herring.
Mauricio Rua vs Dan Henderson: A fantastic fight. One that makes sense for the division and would turn either fighter into an immediate contender for the light heavyweight title. There's a strong chance this could happen as Henderson is currently in talks with the UFC.
Alistair Overeem vs Frank Mir: Could the rumors of Alistair Overeem signing with the UFC coincide with this media call? This fight has been talked about for some time and would be a fantastic headlining bout for the first card.
There's also the chance this call isn't actually about the Fox at all and that Dana is just trying to use some misdirection right now. It could very well be confirmation about earlier reports regarding Brock Lesnar's career and health or it could be to announce an extension with JAXX Pacific. Remember how big of an announcement that was? I'm personally hoping for the UFC getting into the ice cream business with their first line of ice cream bars by Good Humor.
