Wushu isn't just about fancy kicks.
Their base also has wrestling. So I’m not sure why you’re surprised this fight went to the mat.
Banario is still really young and inexperienced, but he had the poise to adjust his game plan when the striking battle didn’t go his way.

not saying it was a bad fight
just described as great battle of styles and while there was great give and take in the striking game, once on the mat Manguray didn’t seem to know what to do at all.

Manguray looks a little slow.
I know he’s 39 and all. This is the problem with the Shotokan style though. If you’re more aggressive and don’t fight like Machida does, keeping your hands down changes from a trap to invite counters to an out-and-out flaw since you’re in range to get tagged all the time.
