UFC 133: The Sweet Stench of Homophobia

Dennis Hallman waits for the bell at UFC 133. Photo by Tracy Lee for Yahoo! Sports

I missed the reveal. I watch UFC PPVs on my computer (legally, to nip that point in the bud), and I'm usually checking Twitter or taking notes while fighters make their entrance into the arena. Which is unfortunate, because had I been watching when Joe Rogan said, "...and what an unfortunate choice of shorts," I probably would have laughed, both at the sight of Dennis Hallman's lavender shorts and the deadpan reaction from Rogan.

One man was not amused. UFC President Dana White tweeted, "WTF!!!! Fighting in that will be illegal after tonight! Anyone want to grapple with hallman?" Despite his touchy history with the queer community, I was willing to give Dana White the benefit of the doubt. I know as well as anyone that tone and nuance translate poorly on Internet, and there was enough ambiguity in the tweet (Seinfeldian in its use of the exclamation mark) to play the dreaded Homophobia Card.

Dana forced my hand, though, when he spoke to leading motorboat reporter Karyn Bryant. Here's Dana's full quote from that exchange:

"I'd call it disgusting. It was disgusting. I don't know how his cornermen- First of all, I'm pissed that someone that works for me let him come out with those on, number one. Number two, as a cornerman, how do you seriously [not] say, 'Dude, this might be a bad idea. You might not want to wear these out there. It was not good. It will never happen again. I can guarantee you that.

"I'm serious. I seriously gave Ebersole the $70,000 bonus. There were only three bonuses tonight. Tito/Rashad for fight of the night, and then Vitor for the KO of the night. That's it; there were no more bonuses. I gave him that bonus for getting that off television as fast as possible. And that's the truth.

"You don't want to remembered for that. That's the last thing you want to be remembered for is going out there and making people watch five minutes of that."

Emphasis mine.

"Making people watch five minutes of that." Five minutes of what exactly? What are we insinuating? Five minutes of Hallman's EXPOSED UPPER THIGH? (WON'T SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!) Or is it the five minutes of Hallman's dong resting in that little pouch in the front? (Because the bicycle shorts of Anderson Silva and Georges St. Pierre leave so much to the imagination.) And it's not like this sort of thing hasn't appeared in the UFC before, or have we forgotten Shonie Carter so quickly?

It would be one thing if White responded (hell, even with anger) that the UFC can't risk Hallman's dong popping out (in HD!) due to some sort of wardrobe malfunction. (It did, by the way. Obvious NSFW link.) That's a legitimate concern for a company trying to push its way into the mainstream.

But that wasn't the source of Dana's anger. It was the shorts themselves. Those skimpy, lilac Speedos. The same sort of attire that nearly every professional wrestler has worn for the last 50 years. Disgusting. Degenerate. Hallman should be ashamed of himself! Nevermind those scantily-clad women gingerly walking around the Octagon helping you count to three (or five). The UFC will not tolerate a man in briefs! And we'll reward the strange character that gets him off the television AS FAST AS HE CAN.

This is blatant homophobia. It made Dana White feel funny cageside, and Dana White does not like being made uncomfortable in his house. So Dana White responds in such a way as to fulfill every stereotype of MMA as a place for macho jock alpha male types. It's such a huge issue that the UFC went out of its way to choose all of four photos of the fight for the event gallery, all of which obscure Hallman's choice of attire.

Dana will have his defenders. He always does. And the credentialed media won't press the issue because he didn't go so far as to use unambiguous slurs. People will accuse me of hyperbole, the issue will fade into obscurity, and it won't be raised until he says something dumb and we repeat the cycle once again. Business as usual!

Yea

I don’t see how in Dana’s response you can say he was hating on the shorts because he doesn’t like gay people. He was hating on the shorts because there was a high probability of a tube steak sighting on live tv. If me not wanting to see that makes me homophobic, then I guess I am as well.

And is it so irrational to draw the conclusion

That the reason he didn’t like the shorts is because Hallman’s dick was being covered up by a blue gum wrapper? To me, there’s nothing homophobic about what he said. Maybe if White said “I don’t want any of that gay shit on my shows” there would be a legit point. But I think most people viewing that display weren’t exactly loving his shorts choice

See

Rollo’s “Shonie Carter” post below. There was no huge issue at that point in UFC history.

So maybe MMA fans/Dana are only worried about seeing white dick?

So you’re jumping to one conclusion over another. Dennis Hallman’s cock could have AND DID end up falling out and making an appearance on television last night. Meanwhile the UFC is still looking to get a new television deal. I would be pretty pissed about Hallman’s shorts too if I were in his position. Note that Dana White went on his rant after that happened. That he didn’t point out a wardrobe malfunction did occur may have simply been because he was hoping the mainstream media had missed it and he didn’t want to draw attention to the televised cock specifically (even though it will undoubtedly be on the internets indefinitely).

So yeah, if there isn’t something conclusively pointing to one conclusion over the other, I’m willing to give Dana White the benefit of the doubt here.

You say this as if the article itself is irrefutable, like merely mentioning something has somehow covered all the bases. The audience doesn’t want to see balls fall out of some speedos. NOT wanting to see balls is homophobic? I didn’t hear Dana White saying anything about gayness.

Anybody who mentions speedos as being gay is exposing their own inner homophobe.

by Chromium on Aug 8, 2011 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Or

How about that he was pissed because it is bad for business. This is a professional sport wanting to be taken seriously by mainstream America. Hallman’s shorts not only had the potential of penis-exposure, which it turned out to be actual penis-exposure, but they were ill-fitting and had no fight-related purpose. It was a circus show choice. And the color of the shorts is irrelevant. It was the fact that he couldn’t even keep his ass in the shorts long enough even walk into the cage. It was the fact the referee and Hallman were laughing because he was tucking his ass in moments before the fight started. I’m not a homophobe but I’m also not a homosexual either. I don’t pay $55 bucks to see P&A.

Dennis Hallman, the man on your left, decided to wear a blue Speedo to accompany his bleached buzz. It’s too much. Our friend Spencer Hall reports that Hallman came out to “We Didn’t Start the Fire.” Even better.

by Robust23 on Aug 7, 2011 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions

To be fair to Dana

You should watch the video and not just read the quote. Bryant eggs him on basically. That is the context of the conversation. She didn’t ask him “what did you think of Hallman’s shorts” she asked “did you think it was disgraceful?”, to which he countered that it was disgusting. Dana was responding that he doesn’t want to be remembered for that when Bryant asked if he was trying to pull this stunt to get remembered. When you put things in block quotes like this it becomes easier to hate. I thought Dana sounded pretty reasonable. This whole thing seems like manufactured controversy over Dana (legitimately) wanting people to take mma seriously. That is not homophobic, its good sense from the president of Zuffa.

He was making a joke for Christ sakes

He was as disturbed as the rest of us – I saw the godamn fight with my parents and I can tell you they weren’t afraid of homosexuals, they just thought the damn thing was indecent as hell! – and he took advantage of the opportunity to make a funny tweet and give a man who put on a great show extra money, which he does quite regularly if I need remind you.

And the Ring girl comparison is such demagoguery to play the sexist card. For the record, my mum and a ton of my female friends do find the ring girl bikinis annoying, but you don’t have tight camel toe, whereas Hallman most certainly had some camel tail action, and you don’t have them dripping in sweat going into north south, rear mount or full mount. It’s asinine to try and play off the disgust as homophobia when it’s clearly Dana turning what could be an offensive and awkward situation into a funny as hell tweet and more money to fighters.

Do you really think Dana would cut Hallman if he won – he already said in an interview that the speedo would not have anything to do with their final decision to keep or cut Hallman – and do you really think he’d throw away 70 grand if he didn’t think Ebersole deserved the bonus or if he eked out a boring decision – if you do than you must hold Dana’s esteem in higher regard than myself.

What happens when they get on a major network and somebody comes out like this and their dong pops out? What do you think will happen? It’s better to nip it in the bud now and outlaw these things. Btw, it won’t just be the network that’s outraged. Anybody remember the Janet Jackson superbowl wardrobe malfunction? That had major implications across radio and tv.

Actually, that's a pretty good analogy.

Imagine if an executive showed up to a critical presentation wearing a short sleeve shirt, a bowtie, and khaki shorts. He might get fired for that.

As for Dana White, I;m pretty sure he’s homophobic, not because of the Hallman incident, but just because of his past exploits. I remember watching TUF one time and the fighters ended up in this 69 position for an uncomfortably long time. When I watched the replay later that evening, that segment of the fight had been edited out. So I’m sure the UFC is well aware of who their top demographic is, and it certainly contains some homophobes.

Dana can add rules to his promotion that the Unified Rules don't cuver

Similar to how Strikeforce banned elbows to grounded opponents. So if he wants to ban those trunks he can since he’s the boss.

Dana is the boss. He said it was unacceptable.

If your boss told you to wear a tie everyday, would you consider that "up for debate"?

Abso-fuckin-lutely! I don’t know how some of you guys wiggle spinelessly through life letting your boss shit on you. Where I work, we actually have some sway cause my boss isn’t the only game in town and he actually needs us. Therefore, he tries to keep us happy.

Is it acceptable?

Like I said earlier, the fact that the guys dick popped out during the fight pretty much kills the pro-banana hammock argument in the cradle. Not to mention he apparently didn’t have a cup in that thing; I guess that the cup is optional but it his shorts increased the chances of some embarrassing youtube clips AND increased the chance of a bad injury. So yeah, not really appropriate.

Please show me where in the unified rules those kinds of shorts are banned. I’ll wait right here. Unless you’ve been banned yourself for that whole “Fagan’s a buffoon” thing in which case I’m dissappointed it wasn’t accompanied by some awesome gif action.

queer is not a homophobic slur

It most certainly is.

Just because a portion of the homosexual community has chosen to ‘take back’ the term does not mean it is no longer homophobic. That’s like saying the N-word is not racist because certain segments of the African-American community choose to use it to describe themselves.

Me too.

Look, I’m not gonna act like I rolled over and booted when I saw that. But the fact is, Dana White has a lot more invested in that than we do. Maybe he is homophobic, but more likely, he is concerned about how the millions of people who will be watching that fight feel about it, especially the ones who are seeing this sport for the first time.

Dana isn’t pissed because he saw Hallman’s dong. He’s pissed because somewhere, ten thousand MMA newcomers are sitting there thinking “is this a fucking joke? what kind of sport is this?” The fact is, speedos and bare dick don’t register with the mainstream sports fans.

No it's not

He’s arguing that Dana’s reaction is homophobic. And I agree. There’s a lot of reasons why the speedo isn’t a good idea for an MMA fight, exemplified by “mishap” last nite. But his reaction didn’t address those issues.

Dana's reaction addressed nothing specifically

All he said was that those speedos should not be allowed, and that he wanted them off television as soon as possible. Fagan simply assumed that the comments were based on White’s homophobia, and reported accordingly, which is simply irresponsible. As I said, the comments were more likely based on something much broader, such as mainstream acceptance of the sport.

by Charger567 on Aug 7, 2011 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions

You completely ignore the part where he called them "disgusting"

Which is really where the argument for homophobia lies.

He in no way addressed mainstream acceptance in his tweet. And has done a hundred other things to hinder said acceptance than one fighter in a speedo.

Read between the lines

Yes, he overreacted when he called it disgusting. That could be interpreted in many ways; disgusting as in it’s inappropriate attire for a professional sport, disgusting as in we don’t want to see your ass and then some, or disgusting as in “ew thats gay you’re disgusting.”

You take your pick of which Dana most likely meant.

by Charger567 on Aug 7, 2011 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions

And even if you think that Dana was genuinely homophobic, there is enough ambiguity that there should not have been an article written denouncing Dana for something he didn’t say.

by Charger567 on Aug 7, 2011 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

There's enough of an argument for it

to warrant Fagan’s speculation, especially considering Dana’s history with slurs by himself and his employees.

I’m not saying you should agree with him. But there’s definitely enough substance to make an article.

And another thing

I realize that Dana gave this more attention than was necessary. Remember how much those fines were? Not to mention that this article even draws the comparison to pro wrestling, which is a visual I think Dana is best avoiding. He already battles the perceived similarities between MMA and wrasslin’. I can’t blame him for not liking that either. Assuming Dana’s reasons is that he hates gay folks when there are plenty of valid reasons to not be pumped for the banana hammock is really, really douchey.

Dana wasn’t being homophobic, he was genuinely upset that Hallman was wearing such a strange pair of shorts. For a sport trying to go mainstream, it certainly doesn’t help to have a main card fighter make a fool out of himself with such attire.

Let the fighters fight, let the referees ref, but dear God, don't let the judges judge.

by halitosis on Aug 7, 2011 1:43 PM EDT reply actions

I laughed my ass off.

Seriously. When he dropped his shorts, it got the reaction he was looking for. I legitimately shouted “What the fuck?!?!” by myself in my own apartment, and started hysterically laughing. My first thought was that Ebersole would intentionally go for a wishbone or something of that nature just to try and blow my funny fuse.

As far as Dana being homophobic, eh, I think that’s a pretty far stretch. I don’t really equate not wanting to see another man’s junk with homophobia, mainly because its a ridiculous point to make when there are many, many clearer examples of homophobia out there to pick on. I found it hilarious, but I guess to each his own.

On the other hand, I still think it was an incredibly misguided decision on his behalf cause he must have known the reaction he would get from others, especially others that happen to be his boss…

Ebersole’s chest hair antics are goofy and completely congruent with his personality, I think it’s clever, I was just a little disappointed it was the same symbol as last fight. For some reason I was under the impression that he switches it up. Once he came out with the ATARI sponsor I was seriously hoping for the Atari symbol shaved in his chest for some extra geekiness.

I don't understand what Dana said that was offensive

He doesn’t like it, he never implied it was gay, and I can understand how people are “uncomfortable” with a speedo-wearing man in a combat fight. To the point of outrage? No. But it’s a little silly and I don’t think the UFC wants any more potential incidents with that sort of attire.

Kinda funny seeing this make a big uproar. I used to work out in a gym that was full of body builders. Any time a guy had a contest coming up a bunch of us would gather in the aerobics room and give him a critique. The posing trunks those guys wear make Hallman’s outfit look modest. None of us ever thought there was anything weird or suggestive about commenting on another guy’s calves or back or even his glutes. And that was a situation where we were meant to look at his body, not a fight where what a dude is wearing is irrelevant to the fight action.

With the sport trying to go mainstream, and uneducated fans saying grappling is “gay”, the last thing you need is garbage like what he wore. Do boxers wear crap like that? And they don’t roll around on the ground with body triangles on their opponents. The UFC edits entrance music so there are no cussing, yet there is a guy’s package being exposed as he rolls with another man. MMA isn’t late night comedy, it’s a real sport that should be taken seriously. I am with Dana on this, and usually I am totally against everything he says. It has nothing to do with being homophobic, it is common sense.

honestly dude

it really shouldn’t be a big deal WHAT fighters wear, as long as it is decent and accepted by the athletic commissions.

revealing clothing is ok I would say (since most of it IS pretty revealing anyways) … BUT, it should stay LEGAL (eg,/ showing your testicles in public is NOT LEGAL)

I think Mike Fagan is mistaking Dana White the fan for Dana White the businessman

I have no idea how Dana White the fan feels, but I’m sure Dana White the businessman was probably mortified throughout. He is in negotiations for a new television deal with multiple different networks. Millions of dollars are on the line. No television executive wants to have a dick slip out on their network, nor does Dana White want to directly bring attention to the possibility of a cock making an appearance on live television to any network exec if that exec didn’t think of the possibility themselves. So he has to say “no, that will never ever happen” without actually mentioning what will never ever happen.

Dana White should get the benefit of the doubt here.

I saw you today. I didn’t see you last night, because I was watching the fight. But, fortunately, some very sharp-eyed people did a frame by frame review and found you. And I have to say, I’m like totally disgusted. What were you thinking? What does it say about you that you were hanging out with dudes with arrows shaved into their man fur? Don’t you know that impressionable kids and adult males were watching and freeze-framing the video and enlarging it to examine you? Don’t you know how you’ve literally killed off the 18-49 straight demographic? Couldn’t you have just a bit of discretion and stayed hidden within that oh-so-tight banana wrap?

I won’t call myself Your Biggest Fan, because that would be a nohomo deal and I’d be banhammered like the back of the skull of Belfort’s next opponent. But listen, next time (if there is one) please remember there’s a time and a place for everything. See you soon (oops! Freudian slip!).

The shorts were funny, and I don't think he should come anywhere close to being cut for wearing them

but I also don’t think it makes you an automatic homophobe if you didn’t like seeing him wearing them.

I have no problems with the shorts themselves. I would have picked something different for him to wear, but if he can keep everything in place he can wear them.

The dick coming out is really a different issue from the shorts themselves however. Once that happened, and more importantly made public then you have reasonable outrage from a pure sports growth perspective.

Before Lowellthehammer jumps in ZOMG DIDN’T YOU READ, HE ADDRESSED" which is why it’s really a different issue altogether.

Like I said I would rather he wear something else, and I sure as hell wouldn’t be comfortable in that. But if he can keep everything in place while doing everything he needs to do then more power to him.

like youre proving a point of the hypocrisy in the sport. theres been ring girls in combat sports for a century cuz for the last century the fanbase that pays to watch combat sports has been overwhelmingly filled with straight males (and yes many of them are homophobic-unfortunate but true story).

also think of this. whats worst for the business? like 50 real fans being upset that hallman cant wear man thongs, or the thousands of fair weather fans that were at hooters and dave and busters that looked up at the screen and started talking that “see mma is gay, bunch of naked dudes rolling on top of eachother”.

A tan or dark-skinned male with a good build in a speedo looks sexy to a gay guy, maybe most women, and admirable to a straight guy (as in, "he’s in good shape… maybe I’ll put down the Hot Pocket Mt. Dew Big Gulp and do some push-ups."

I don’t have any issue with Dana White being idiosyncratic but when he does things like give Ebersole a bonus like that he is guaranteeing weeks of reporters asking him about it and he will get annoyed and look surprised.

What really annoys me...

if you are going to give a made-up, arbitrary bonus to a fighter, give it to Rory MacDonald for basically being the most dominating fighter of the entire night. He made Pyle look like an amateur. I would be insulted were I Rory. Ebersole wasn’t even winning the first half of the match. Would White had given him a “hazard bonus” for losing?

God the white knighting on this site is fuckin ridiculous

Like the gay community needs bloody elbow as their hero, or that it would be utterly incomprehensible for a gay person to believe that Baal man may have also dressed inappropriately – lest he be a self loathing homophobe.

I’m as libertarian as they come, but yeah, he was dressed like an idiot last night. By your logic people should just go ancient Greek and fight naked and we’d all be gay-haters if we said boo. Bloody elbow staff and a lot of the posters are so desperate to tr and attach some kind of intellectualism to mma (when the sport is already filled with it) in order to drown out the tools that you go making victims where there are none, when I fact to most reasonable, non-gay-bashing people, hetero and homo, understand that it’s not as big a deal as you’re making it. Jeez you guys do this shit all the time it’s so ridiculous. Newsflash: the LGBTQ community doesn’t need you as a hero dude. It’s so arrogant and condescending. Like trying extra hard to hold a handicaps person hand. It’s like a not-funny version of Michael Scott dealing with Oscar or race relations. Seriously dude.

At the post-fight press conference for Saturday’s UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi, UFC President Dana White unsurprisingly said he was "embarrassed" by the actions of middleweight champ Anderson Silva in a successful-but-criticized title defense over Demian Maia.

"I don’t think I’ve been more embarrassed in the 10 years of being in this business," said White. "It’s the first I’ve ever walked out on a main event, given the belt to the guy’s manager and told him to put it on him."

It was silly and tacky, imho. I would rather don't have to see it b/c that look-at-me schtick. But there is an actual issue with homophobia, I think.

Nothe that I may have a double standard for frowning on them tight speedoes when I don’t frown over in-cage antics like jumping all over the fence of screaming around…feel free to point that out to me.

Is it overreacting on White’s part though? He is trying to build up a company and keeps a iron fist on what is done with it. Hallman’s thong while funny goes completely against what he is trying to do and the wardrobe malfunction could end up causing a ton of grief. I don’t think it will, but it could. White is completely in the right to take issue with it imo.

This post on the other hand though is just the standard taking up of the arms post. It doesn’t matter if those arms need to be taken up or not, they will be if they can be. I mean the whole post is written on what, Fagan’s emphasis not White’s.

White said nothing at all about homosexual people in his comments. He didn’t even allude to them. If I were gay, I’d be more offended by this article than by Dana’s comments, as the article infers that wearing tight, brightly colored speedos can be directly associated with gay men. This is hyper-sensitive.

If you watch closely, the "reveal" was due to an illegal move by the opponent

Pretty sure I saw Ebersole grab the shorts and snap the elastic very violently. Someone could have gotten seriously hurt. Probably damaged the elastic, leading to the unfortunate incident that I and millions of other didn’t notice at the time but were horrified to learn of much later. I’m still indignant.

being there live, it certainly brought out the worst in some of the crowd.
one asshole behind me actually yelled out ‘beat up that queer!’ to the disgust of most of the section we were in. THAT was homophobic.

others in the audience sort of echoed that sentiment and booed Hallman when he showed whatever offense he dished out just because of what he was wearing. a man in speedos really doesn’t have anything to do with sexuality to me.

yet Dana may have simply not wanted to have an exposed cock during the broadcast. if that’s what he meant [and we cannot be sure, due to lack of tone], it is a legitimate complaint. there was far more hate and ignorance in the select group of assholes that were spectating, not Dana.

It's not that White's directly attacking the queer community that makes his comments homophobic

rather, it’s his overreaction to the shorts and the societal association of “immodesty” and homosexuality that make his comments homophobic.

has walked into the Octagon wearing an evening gown and holding the hands of his cornerman. He did so again tonight and Dana loves the guy. Homophobia is a serious accusation and I’ll give Dana the benefit of the doubt. He definitely overreacted, I thought they were goofy but altogether not a big deal. But i think it’s something he personally didn’t want to see and not based on it being “gay looking”.

by Coeman on Aug 7, 2011 4:42 PM EDT reply actions

nah, not gold.

It probably bothers a lot of readers than a writer on here would make such a ridiculous leap of logic to call Dana’s actions pertaining to Hallman’s attire “homophobic”. There was nothing homosexual about Hallman’s stunt. He was obviously trying to outdo Ebersole’s “hairrow” in tackiness and he surpassed Ebersole by leaps and bounds, but it wasn’t anywhere near as creative. It was pretty tasteless and Dana agreed. As for comparing it to the old pro wrestling garb, this was a bit worse and was somewhere in between that and a thong, probably closer to the thong side. I simply don’t see how a rational person would level homophobia charges against Dana White not wanting to see someone participate in MMA while wearing something that was that revealing. Again, it seems to me like quite the leap of logic.

“This is blatant homophobia”. Oh please. This has to do with taste not homosexuality. Homosexual and heterosexual people alike laughed at those shorts. I think to link those shorts with homosexuality in this article shows far more homophobia than White’s comments. Hallman was trying to get a reaction and he did.

"There wasn't a man voting for it that didn't think that under a setup of this kind he'd muscle in on the profits of the men abler than himself...But while he was thinking that he'd get unearned benefits from the men above he forgot about the men below who'd get unearned benefits too. He forgot about all his inferiors that would rush to drain him just as he hoped to drain his superiors...That was our real motive when we voted. That was the truth of it. But we didn't like to think it. So the less we liked it the louder we yelled about our love for the common good."

Homaphobia...WTF ?

How do you think the owner of the NBA would re-act if it’s players came out to play in ’speedo’s’, or how about the NFL’s owners if there players came out in full protective gear…but in speedo’d (I purposely left out the NHL…LOL)
It was poor taste in an effort to cry out for attention at the end of a lack-luster career. Ebersole committed the same offense imo w/ the arrow shaved on his chest…“equally as dis-tasteful imo”
Every sport has it’s attire regulations and if you don’t regulate ‘em sh*t like Hallman’s ‘poom-poom’ shorts will happen again… there is a time and place for everything. WRONG TIME & PLACE !
Dana is smack in the middle of building a sport, a brand, a Co. that will rival that of the NBA/NBL/etc. His re-action was on point and it’s the homophobes that are twisting it into something it’s not.

by Empty Thoughts on Aug 7, 2011 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I feel stupid having to point this out but,

every modern society in the world has a basic set of dress standards based on an appropriate level of dress and most have laws in place against things like “indecent exposure” to prevent people from wearing clothes which would be “disgusting” to the majority of the public.

The fact is that if you walked around in what Hallman was wearing you’d be arrested in a hell of a lot of places.

Next time Mr Fagan is walking through the shops he should have a look around and think of how many people he’d rather not see in their underpants. It’s not homophobic, racist, ageist, or any other kind of discrimination to state your objection to having someone else’s genitals paraded in front of your face unnecessarily and without your consent.

The point is Hallman INTENTIONALLY wore pants which were excessively revealing to compete in a fight. He’s not a model and (I assume) nobody paid for the fights in order to see Hallmans junk. If the event was advertised as ‘UFC 133: Hallman in budgie smugglers’ then nobody would have any right to be complaining.

For the record I thought it was freaking hilarious, but given how offensive it would be to a lot of people I think its pretty ridiculous for the owner of the company to be labelled a homophobe for saying it was disgusting.

Mr. Fagan

You kind of taking this interpretation with Dana’s comments on homophobia a little too far. I am surprised considering you had to defend yourself many, many posts ago regarding your comments in the “This week’s quotes” installment about Rampage and his 6, 7, or kids which many interpreted as being racist

by The Bronzeville Bully on Aug 7, 2011 9:51 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

850-plus comments, and no one has mentioned Mike Easton yet? Dana won’t like those shorts, either.

I couldn’t get through the comments, because so many of them said, “Did you miss the part of the article that addressed exactly that point?” And there was actually no part of the article that addressed that point, unless the post was changed.

by Beau Dure on Aug 7, 2011 10:06 PM EDT reply actions

hahahahaha

This is a ridiculous article. Homophobic? He was grossed out about some pale man wearing an article of clothing that could barely keep his genitalia covered while competing in a sport with a live audience. So what if they used that type of outfit in professional wrestling. As if there isn’t enough comparisons with MMA and pro wrestling already. If somebody wore that with their jersey in the NBA, it would be just as bad. This is a stupid thing to even consider complaining about. Dana White was grossed out by it and he expressed that. Big deal. I thought it was gross too. Just like a fat chick in a bikini. That doesn’t make me heterophobic.

On top of that do people seriously still use the word homophobic? It’s a completely inaccurate term, I may hate gays but that doesn’t equal being afraid of them.
