Part 5! You can finally stop clicking out of pity! Wooooo! (drinks whiskey, broods, listens to The Cure).
But seriously, I sincerely appreciate every single read, comment, rec, etc... and hope you keep reading what bile I spew onto this site. It means more to me than you know and I loved putting this series together. Alright, enough fairy shit.
WITHOUT FURTHER ADO! (go pens)
You were in the sport much, much longer than most people think, flying under the radar for most of it. However, one year, all your stars aligned to pull out an unfathomable championship win in a stacked conference against a French Canadian opponent in a big upset. You never came close to reclaiming that glory and surrendered your title the next year, and since then, you've mostly faded away. Your national recognition is slim, but every now and then you pop your head up and make a splash, but you go back underwater afterward. You seem content where you are now, which some fans may not appreciate.
Haters gonna hate, but you were the champ. Yes, it was exceptionally brief, yes, your division and conference were lacking, yes it was probably a fluke for a few different reasons, but you held that shiny object. Siince then, you've become the most unreliable, inconsistant, unpredictable sheep in the flock. Most years you're nowhere to be found, but when you do decide to compete and actually step into the arena, you do fairly well, but you haven't been able to string together ANY consistent years in so long that fans don't even consider you relevant anymore.
Holy shit were you a force. For years you were a goddamned menace. You moved from your native land to a new home in the late 90s and never looked back. You were a dominant force in an extremely tough division. One rivalry in particular still holds up as perhaps the bloodiest feud in your sport's history in those glory days, with you usually coming out on top. You attracted the best people, surrounded yourself with a fantastic team and support system and ran roughshod over the league. But that gravy train had to end some time. Nobody can compete forever, and the last couple years have confirmed that it's been tough for you. Your biggest rival stole your crown and overtook you and teams that would cower in your wake now take you out with no fear. You've hit rock bottom. Can you be salvaged? Only time will tell, but the glory days are just a memory now.
You left your home, where you were and still are extremely popular, to try your hand at a new venture. Your very early success was definitely something to behold. However, as time progressed, you seem to just kind of fade away. For a variety of reasons, you could never recapture that magic. TV outlets still held you in high regard because of your past successes and you were always a "name" opponent for anyone trying to get you, but you never seemed to click like you used to. You've made some decent runs, but you haven't been able to reclaim what you once had, both professionally and excitement-wise. Your fans seem to be loyal, on the upside, and are waiting for another rise up.
Your style, while EXTREMELY unpopular, certainly won you multiple championships. The gameplan was simple and efficient. Play it safe. Score a couple of decent shots early, then play if safe, defend, move, and make your opponent beat you. Some would say your style was amongst the most boring era of the time in your league. But hell, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? Eventually, teams caught on and with an influx of new talent, couple simply attack early, dodge your aging defense, and for once, make YOU beat them. Although you could certainly bring the violence when need be, and you did put on some damned fun violent shows, it was just a means to the end, which was you doing what it takes to win. Lately, however, things haven't been good to you, as you've completely fallen out of contention for the first time in nearly a decade. Though your visible fans have dwindled, you'll still have a few diehards that want you to turn it around.
Hooooly shit, you want to talk about inconsistent? Yes, you have a title to your name, but it's extremely flimsy. It came before an enormous shakeup and you lost it soon after your faced some real opposition under new guidelines. You're either "in the mix", or you're buried deep in your own division. But just when we think your time is up, you shock us and make a legitimate run. We never know which squad is gonna show up on gametime. Some decisions you've made have been god-awful, but lately it seems finally you have some stability and clarity.
