If you think the UFC and MMA in general would be where it is today without Dana F. White, you can leave this fanpost right now and post “An Open Letter To Hashmo” and I’ll get to it later.
DFW has openly stated that he tries to give the fans what they want but the “hardcore fans” (The Internet forum users) are idiots. I really wonder who is right and who is wrong, whether the collective minds of a forum could make a better business decision than the “most influential figure in sports”. Let’s see where we differ:
- Women’s MMA: Clearly DFW doesn’t support it, or much less think there’s much to support. His views have become a little softer but there will likely never be a Women’s Division in any weight class in the UFC. I tend to agree with him, who even watches womens sports? Do the MLB, NBA, NFL or NHL broadcast their women’s version? Do they even have them? Well apparently they should, because people on BloodyElbow and other forums get so up in arms over lack of support for the women of MMA that apparently every sport is wrong and WMMA is absolutely an asset to the sport.
- Alistair Overeem: The Internets #1 HW. DFW couldn’t care less for this guy. I don’t know if he learned from the failed negotiations with M-1/Fyodor, but this is one fighter he doesn’t think he needs. Does the UFC HW division need The Demolition Man to bring balance to the fo-division? I personally think he missed out on a huge asset here, I think he is the most marketable HW out there right now… but clearly he thinks differently. I think the Internet’s saying “you’ve made a huge mistake” here.
- Spike TV: This channel is synonymous with the UFC. I really don’t know why he’s trying so hard to find a new channel to put the UFC on. I don’t even get this O network. Doesn’t Oprah own that channel? And NBC Sports, good luck putting TUF on that channel. Go back to Spike you donkey. I don’t know how the Internet feels on this one but since I’m on the Internet I think he’s making a huge mistake.
- Dan Henderson: I think the Internet is ready to crown their new champ! He lost back to back title shots in the UFC, followed by a controversial victory over Rich “Calculon” Franklin and then the most fantastic knock out of his career (I think it trumps his defeat of Fyodor). So as far as I and DFW are concerned, his job in the UFC was done. He represented America and stomped out that limey chav. There was literally nothing left for him to do. HOWEVER the Internet cries his name, the LHW division is completely stale! What could bring more life to it than an aged fighter who found limited success in it 3 years ago? That’s right, Internets are saying “Bring back Dan Henderson, let him fight Jon Jones”
So these are just a few points where I think DFW is probably a brilliant Rhodes Scholar for not listening to hardcore fans who think they can run his business better.
