Updated UFC rankings

Here are my UFC rankings along with the upcoming matches they have planned.  I put these charts together to help me see what realistic fights are out there and make sense, and who is currently booked.  I rank guys based off results and my opinion of who’s the best.  The next guy getting the next title isn’t always ranked number 2, when guys are inactive for a long period of time (usually around a year) I start dropping them down the rankings a little at time.  Most of the time new fighters to UFC are going to start at the bottom of the rankings unless I’ve seen enough of their body of work to rank them a little higher.  Let me know what you think, but if you tell me I have someone ranked too high, let me know where you think they should be ranked.  It is easy to say someone isn’t top 10, until you look at all the other guy out there.

LHW:  Is Shogun that good, or is Forrest that bad?  That was a good win for Shogun, and I don’t want to take much away from it, but based on Forrest Griffins comments leading into the fight, and the fact that he has a very pregnant wife at home I wonder how much Forrest’s head was in this fight.  The more I read into Forrest’s comments, the more I wouldn’t be surprised to see him walk away from the sport, as a fighter at least.  What’s next for Shogun though?  I could see UFC trying to match him with Rampage next… if Rampage loses to Jon Jones next month, but I’d like to see him against Phil Davis.

Will Dan Henderson come back into the mix?  I’d like to see him take another run at it.  I’ve heard the rumors of Phil Davis and Machida getting ready to fight later this year, but I’d love to see Hendo v Machida, but that is all dependent on the deal getting done.  Or if Hendo v Anderson Silva happens.

If any division could use a wave a fresh talent it is LHW.  Most prospects take 18-24 months to climb the ranks after they join UFC, and I’m just not seeing too many guys getting ready to do that at 205.   After Jon Jones, and Phil Davis this division is very dependent on the Old Guard to sustain it right now.  Rampage, Forrest, Tito, Bonnar, Franklin, Lil Nog, Machida, and Shogun all seem like they could be one bad fight or injury away from retirement at this point. Stanislav Nedkov didn’t look that impressive, but then again he hadn’t fought in well over a year.   I think a fight against Igor Pokrajac would be good for him, and UFC to see if he really is a potential top 15 talent, or if he just landed a perfect combo against Luis Cain.

Other fights I’d make are Gustafsson v Matyushenko, and Ortiz v Franklin

Heavyweight: Why should we be surprised at Big Nog’s win over Brandan Schaub… it just parallels his whole career.  Just when you think he is done, he pulls something out and comes back.  I think UFC will look to match him with Frank Mir next.  It is a re-match that both guys seem interested in.   Brock Lesnar is back in the news, and it sounds like we will be seeing him early next year.  My guess is that he will fight the Nelson/Cro Cop winner.  I think that would be a great fight for a guy coming off an extended layoff.  Business is about to pick up for this division.  There are 2 fights in September, but then a lot of guys will be in action come October… oh yeah, and I fully expect Alistar Overeem to get into the mix at some point, which will help to shake things up at the top of the division.

MW:  Anderson Silva is the greatest… enough said.  I heard what Dana said, but I hope they put him on the FOX debut against Dan Henderson.  More people need to see Anderson Silva.

What to do with Vitor Belfort?   I like the idea of him fighting the Leben/Munoz winner, but I don’t like the fact that to take that fight he would have to be out of action for about 6-7 months at least.  Right now, I’d match him with Palhares.  That would be a very interesting fight with some contrasting styles. Speaking of Palhares… Something is just not clicking with this guy while he is in the cage.  He is a great fighter, his rags to riches story is amazing, but how many times are we going to see odd moments in his fights.  The mid fight greasing accusation that got him punch out against Marquardt, not releasing the leg lock against Drawl, and then the pre-mature celebration against Dan Miller.  He needs to get his mind right in the cage, or he is never going to reach his full potential.

Stann v Sonnen will give us a clear number 1 contender, but lets face it this is a terrible stylistic match-up for Stann.   He has shown little takedown defense in his career, and not enough submissions to keep Sonnen at bay.  We’ll see if his game has progressed over the last few years.

Other fights I’d make are Phillippou v Natal, and Noke v Dollaway .

WW:  Erick Silva made a good first impression.  He trains with a great camp and should be coming into his prime right now.  I thought they should have given a 2nd KO of the night bonus for him, especially seeing there was no Submissions.  I’d like to see him in there with a solid UFC vet like Matt Brown next.  That would be a good test of his skills

Johny Hendricks v Jon Fitch makes sense to me.   Hendricks is 6-1 in UFC, and he just fought, so he should be ready to fight again in November.  I hope UFC makes the fight.  Fitch can stay busy, and Hendricks can get his chance to break into the top 10.

Turns out that Paulo Thiago has rock star status in Brazil, but despite a good showing against David Mitchell, I just don’t see him climbing too far back up this ranking.  Claude Patrick would be a good next fight for him.

Fights I’d make Rocha v Foster, Sadollah v Hardy,

LW:  Edson Barboza won, but I think the crazy hype train can slow down a little bit.  He still has a lot of things to work on, and with the crowded mess at the top of the division, I don’t see a reason to rush him.   He needs to fight someone with some grappling skills next.  I think a good match up would be the TJ Grant/Shane Roller winner.

Guida v Henderson, everyone including the fans, the fighters, and their managers wants this fight.  Now that UFC Rio is over, and they don’t have a UFC card for 3 weeks, I’m sure Dana, Lorenzo, and Joe Silva will get busy populating the 12 November card.

I think Evan Dunham will handle Shamar Bailey on Sept 17th, and then I’d like to see him matched up with Donald Cerrone, but at the pace he is going Cerrone might have 2 fights by the time they can make that fight.

Other fights I’d make are Sherk v Bocek, and Cole Miller v Sotiropolus

FW: UFC continues to add depth to this division with reports that they have signed Tachi 145 champion Eddie Yagin, who is coming off a big win over Joe Soto.  It will be interesting to see what he brings to the division.

Jim Hettes looks like a legit prospect.  That was some impressive grappling, and he also showed the ability to listen to his corner, and make adjustments in between rounds.  He went from keeping his opponent in the fight, to just dominating and finishing with a quick adjustment.  Lets not forget, he also took this fight on short notice.

Other fights I’d make are Nunes v Poirier, and Hominick v Vazquez.

BW:  UFC is clearly prepping for the opening of the flyweight division by adding new talent to the BW division.  I’m sure at least 3-5 fighters will make the drop when UFC decides to add the 125 division.  Joe Benavidez, and Demetrious Johnson are the two highest profile guys, but I’m sure others will make the drop.

If anyone could use a change in weight class, it is Joe Benavidez.  Two losses to the champ, and your chief training partner is ranked next to you.  Some of his fight options are limited these days.

I’m interested to see what they do with Michael McDonald next, I’d match him with Miguel Torres

Another fight I’d make are Pace v Figueroa, and Jabouin v Duran.
