UFC 134 Results: Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira with a Stunning Knockout of Brendan Schaub

Remember what I said about Stanislav Nedkov silencing the Brazilian crowd with that knockout over Luis Cane? Yeah, didn't last long. The Brazilians were incredibly vocal as Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira made his way to the UFC cage against Brendan Schaub. There were some concerns about Big Nog's ability to take a punch at this point in his career after two losses to Cain Velasquez and Frank Mir along with a career of taking damage to pull off hail mary submission wins.

Tonight he came out and didn't look particularly good early on. Call it ring rust. Call it old age. Call it just not being the same fighter he once was. But Big Nog wasn't moving light on his feet and was getting punched by Brendan Schaub constantly in the opening round. As the round continued Nog started to warm up and get more comfortable in the UFC's cage. He began to land on Schaub who was leaving his chin open for Nogueira's attacks. The ending came as a surprise to all when Nogueira backed the Hybrid up against the cage and landed a combination that dropped the fighter from the Jackson camp.

This is perhaps the biggest win of Nogueira's career, fighting in front of his home crowd and proving to everyone that he still was relevant in a very young heavyweight division. He stopped Brendan Schaub in less than two minutes and with the win is now 4-2 in the UFC. His overall record is 33-6-1-1. Schaub has to take a step back and figure out where he stands in the division. Riding wins over Gabriel Gonzaga and Mirko Filipovic into this bout, he was 4-1 in the UFC. Now 4-2 and 8-2 overall, his dreams of challenging for the heavyweight title are on hold.

WAR BIG NOG. I’ll never doubt you again. If you’re a fan of MMA, you cannot help but feel happy about this victory.

I wonder what this fight says about Crocop’s striking abilities though

What BIGNAT said,

plus- styles make fights. It seems that Schaub does well against kickboxers (Mirko, Gonzaga) but does poorly against good boxers (Nog, Nelson).

What we can say about Mirko’s striking abilites are this- his style was very physical and heavily relied on his athleticism & aggression. When his body started slowing down, he started taking more shots and started getting KO’d. This hurt his confidence and made him fight more cautiously. Mirko has, and always HAS had supreme striking technique. It’s his defense and movement (footwork and head movement) that’s been lacking at times. His style of striking translated very well to MMA at the time, as all he had to do was sprawl and lock up a tight guard in the event of a takedown, and the overall level of striking in MMA was such that Crocop could basically maul anyone on the feet (with the exception of Fedor).

Hyperbole much. This isn’t close to his best win. But it was amazing nonetheless.

he said "biggest", not "best"

it was a do-or-die fight to stave off retirement in his home country against a guy who’d recently been knocking peoples’ heads off. if its not his biggest win, its one of the biggest.

nah

a competitive fight would be best on the inaugural show. mir would steamroll nog. UFC should help nog build some momentum.

Either that or a rematch with Crocop.

YYYYYEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!

I am beyond psyched that Nog won this fight. Not even close to his best win though, ROFL! He is at the twilight of his career but gutted out a win against a fighter in Schaub who thought he could get an easy win. I am so happy for him. This may be a great time to retire for him IMO. I am sure he won’t because his stock went up and Nog can make a lot more money now. Schaub got what he deserved.

Knocked out by old Nog!!

I said Brendon Shaub was a poser. This says more about Shaub than it does Nog. Better for it to happen now, before he started fighting top contenders. Back to the drawing board for Shaub. Big Nog could call it a day, great way to end his career.

What I dont like about guys like Schaub and Bader is that they challenge legends who they believe are ‘has-beens’, just to feed off their name. That’s why it feel even sweeter when they get soundly beaten.

by Silvio Dante on Aug 27, 2011 10:05 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

The funny thing is

Schaub was saying that he’d take his boxing over everyone at HW. Meaning that he thought he could take guys like Junior Dos Santos & Overeem.

LOL

For all the talk about Nog looking out of shape

I didn’t think he looked that different from his last few fights… even at his best he never had the sculpted physique. And yeah, Schaub definitely wilts like a cheap suite when he is actually challenged.

This was quite possibly my favorite moment in MMA history, at least for the moment. I haven’t been able to wipe the smile off my face since it happened, and Shogun’s destruction of Forrest was just icing on the cake.

Man, I kind of feel bad for Forrest

Would rather it had gone a full three rounds. That way, no shame for the loser and we’d actually get to see where Shogun is really at with his knees and fitness.

by DrFernando on Aug 27, 2011 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions

This.

Shogun looked alright, but the fight was too short to take anything away from it, other than when Forrest goes down, he flails like he’s having a seizure and just gets his bounced off the canvas until he’s done. And we already knew that.

I think he should rematch Mir,

But I think he’ll be saved to fight Brock to complete the trilogy when he returns. Any idea who he should fight? I don’t want Nog to get murdered in his next fight…

This was soo deserved.

That’s what you get Schaub for asking for a title shot after a weak as shit performance against Cro Cop where you were getting beat till that knock out shot

by Robust23 on Aug 27, 2011 11:00 PM EDT reply actions

Nog's chin was still there actually

Nog took a big uppercut and some other strikes from Schaub, and still pushed forward. Great to see Rodrigo Nogueira winning. It is also ironic because Nog won in the standup, and many (including myself) felt that he would lose in the standup but would win on the ground.

Good point. Schaub has some power in those hands and Nog ate a couple shots that left me wincing, thinking it was almost over.

Just like I was incredibly happy to see Leben finish Wanderlai, I’m incredibly happy Big Nog finish Schaub. I hate guys who pick their opponents, and I couldn’t be happier that Big Nog killed off the chances the UFC wasted a HW title shot on Schaub. Now, UFC, can you find decent opposition for Anderson, please? Everyone knew Okami didn’t stand a chance, yet, that was still the best option for Anderson. That’s just pathetic for the best MMA org on the planet. Let’s find good MW’s, please!!!

Stann vs Sonnen is a number 1 contender match, apparently. If Sonnen fights, fine, he showed he could put up a fight against Anderson and it’ll be an incredible fight. But Stann? Really? And Munoz? What? Both of these guys will get destroyed just by Anderson looking at them.

by Shnak on Aug 27, 2011 11:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I hear you.

but it’s entertaining everytime. Anderson puts on the greatest show on earth.

So, I know this probably won't happen, and many people may disagree, but does anyone else want to see Nog retire now?

Go the Chris Lytle route, dont wait to lose a few in a row like Crocop or Chuck, and hang up the gloves now. Hes had an amazing career, doesnt need to take any more punishment, and no one could fault him for calling it quits. Hes probably not on the level of the top guys in the division, and even though he may have a few good fights left, as a big Big Nog fan, i really just want to see him retire on a high nore.

Immediately when the fight started, we got an emergency service warning for 3 minutes. My friends and I were worried that when it ended, we’d be greeted with the scene of Nog laying in a heap on the canvas. Instead, it came back on with just enough time to see Nog back him about the cage and pound him out. I was jumping around my living room! Got really lucky there. The power also went out not five minutes after the main event ended, so we dodged some bullets for sure.
