Shogun vs Machida on Fox
In a recent interview with Ariel Helwani, Dana make it very clear Anderson will not be on the 1st Fox show, but he is waiting on something this weekend to decide what the Fox show main event will be. Looking at the rest of the card, I think it must be the Forest vs Shogun fight he is waiting on. Okami isn't exactly a guaranteed exciting fighter. Neither Big Nog or Schaub are first show on Fox main event exciting. So it must be Forrest or Shogun right?
So assuming Forrest or Shogun, both are certainly great fighters worthy of a main event on Fox. On one hand having Forrest provides a lot of symmetry. Forrest was one of the combatants in the fight which saved the UFC and sent them on the upward trajectory they are on now. So having him on the first network show seems a nice idea. However, who would he fight to promise an exciting fight and a compelling story? I've had a few drinks, but I just cannot think of anyone near as compelling as the combination of Shogun vs Machida.
Shogun vs Machida part III is almost guaranteed to be an exciting fight. Both are are stand-up specialists that new viewers could presumably enjoy. The story of a tie breaker for the next title shot is a gimme. So all told I think that is what Dana is waiting on. I want to say Forrest for the symmetry of it all, but I just cannot think of promised match up that has the kind of story the 1st fight on Fox needs. So end of day, I think he is waiting on Shogun. If Shogun wins, I think we'll see Shogun vs Machida in a number 1 contender bout as the main event on Fox.

Forrest is gonna screw that up
And I’d like to see him fight Machida rather than see Machida lose a third time to Shogun.
Let the fighters fight, let the referees ref, but dear God, don't let the judges judge.
I'd love a Machida vs Shogun rubber match
I mean, I’m pulling for and feeling that Forrest wins…but the idea of Machida winning their 3rd fight really makes part of me want Shogun to win.
So here’s hoping.
But even if Shogun doesn’t win, Forrest vs Machida or Henderson is a cool matchup, Shogun vs Machida or Henderson is a cool matchup as well.
I would rather not see Machida fight Henderson though.

I’d completely overlooked the Henderson angle! That is certainly an interesting idea for Shogun. Maybe even a more compelling story for the new US audience than two Brazilians, with the whole US Olympian angle and all.
Plus it counts as one of those big 'what if' Pride fights that never happened
You have to assume with Hendo being the Pride 205 champ that Shogun at some point probably would have liked to get revenge for Wanderlei.

It'll be Forrest / Tito III
May not be the most relevant matchup, but it’s almost guaranteed to be an action packed fight and it’ll get casual viewers to tune in. Plus if Forrest gets by Shogun, a fight with Tito would give Griffin a shot at a 4 fight winning streak and maybe set up a title shot.
forrest vs machida is fun
forrest would get raped, but it’d be fun

I want to see Shogun vs. Machida III
but only as a title fight. 3 rounds is a letdown after their two previous fights. Hendo vs. Shogun or Machida, or Forrest for that matter is a better way to go. And, while this may be what the UFC is waiting on, neither Shogun nor Lyoto are particularly marketable to new fans in America. They’re popular, but it’s hard to envision them being huge stars here without a title reign. It’d be a great fight, but hell Barboza vs. Cerrone or something would be a barnburner as well.
What's this war in the heart of nature? Why does nature vie with itself? The land contend with the sea? Is there an avenging power in nature? Not one power, but two?

I’m not sure when that starts, or if it applies to all main events or not, but we’ll see. You may be right on there. I’d still like to see them fight other people before doing this again. They’ve only had a total of three fights between them since their second match.

Mach Sho III
I think Machida wins part 3
If you payed attention to the fight before the KO, machida had a good game-plan. He scored some points standing and would score a take down here and there (zero take down attempts in the 1st fight) I really think if he had made it out of round 1, he would have won. Shogun would have sat down with his corner at the bell and realized his knee was fubar again (on 2nd take down) and would probably start focusing on that instead of the fight.
So machida def had a different game plan and it appeared to be effective.
His mistake, if you want to call it that, was over committing and missing badly which is not something machida is known for in his previous fights. He probably felt he had to take risks and go for a finish to re establish his aura but it back fired.
So i would say Mach-Sho I was very close and depending on your scoring criteria a case can be made for both fighters but the general sense was Machida did lose in the big picture of the fight, but thats not how fights are exactly scored in the UFC.
I would bet on Hendo v. Shogun
Machida v. Shogun would be sweet though.
Came into this thead to post this
It is a particularly violent style match up, both guys run right in throw haymakers and possess iron chins.

Only way we see a Shogun and Machida rematch again is if one of them is holding the belt.
Shogun won both of their previous fights convincingly.
No he didn't
