USA TODAY/MMA Nation August 2011 Consensus Rankings
August's USA TODAY/MMA Nation Consensus Rankings are now live. Be sure and pick up a hard copy of USA TODAY Friday to see them in print.
Based on the premise that all MMA rankings are subjective but that it’s still useful and informative to know who the MMA community as a whole ranks as the best fighters in MMA, we collect and average the rankings of the top MMA sources to produce our consensus rankings. We compile the top MMA rankings from each of our sources and award 25 points for a first place ranking, 16 for a 10th place ranking, 1 for a 25th place ranking. A formula is used to "normalize" the data so all fighters are awarded points from those lists that do not include a full 25 fighters. This formula ensures that each ranking site awards the same number of total points regardless of how many fighters they choose to rank. Each fighter’s total is divided by the number of possible points to determine their standing in the Consensus Rankings.
More details on our methodology in the full entry.
NOTE: We have modified our method of gathering our rankings because the strict scheduling requirements of USA TODAY clash with the more irregular schedules of many of the MMA rankings sites. That was causing us to use a different set of sources almost every month. That combined with the small number of sites doing top 25 rankings was causing the Consensus rankings to have a lower "signal to noise" ratio than we would like -- that is if fighters are going to be moving up or down I would like it to be because there has been a change in the consensus opinion, not a change in our sources. Therefore we have cut back our sources to just those sites that we can depend on to update every month. We have also contacted many of the rankers that only publish top 10 lists and asked them to provide top 25 lists. As always we listen to your suggestions and are always working to improve the USAT/SBN Consensus MMA Rankings.

Yay rankings!
The best fights outside the cage!
Let’s get it on!

They're more than a little upsetting.

Care to elaborate?
I ask simply because outside of Griffin in the top 10, I am not that pissed at the FW rankings.
Goldie: Michael Jordanesque in his grappling skills is Travis Lutter
Rogan (with a sound of disgust in his voice): No, no, no he is not.

Curran is below Sandro!
How the hell can you rank a guy who just knocked the other one silly below him?

Yeah, I'd like to hear your complaints smoogy
My rankings are pretty significantly different than the outcome, but I’m interested in your input.

Fighters ranked several spots above the only guy in the division they beat… fighters ranked below opponents they just beat emphatically… fighters in the top 10 strictly because they fought for UFC/WEC on television… you name it. Patricio Freire could knock out every fighter in Bellator and he’d be maybe 10th at best, but if he knocked out a couple people on TV for UFC he’d be #2 right away if Joe Rogan loudly declared that he was FOR REALLLLL
Well, that's not entirely tangible
If you’re talking about Florian and Griffin being so high, I agree, but your first two complaints somewhat contradict each other.
And comparing UFC and non-UFC fighters is a constant plague that no one is ever unanimously happy with. I’d be interested to see your top 10-15 if you’re up for it.

If Pettis is still higher then Gumby
Then I have Officially given up on any kind of ranking system.
"I don't think strength plays that big of a difference. If it's that big of a difference, then the elephant would be the king of the jungle, not the lion."- Anderson "The Spider" Silva
I still don't get a lot of these rankings.
You beat a guy, you should be ranked above them in my opinion. It’s really simple.
That's kinda crazy
That means Tito should’ve taken Bader’s spot right after he beat him, and that was Tito’s first win in 6 fights since 2006.
Go through all the rankings and see how loony they would turn out if you applied that method.
Hell, Sergei has wins over both Overeem and Werdum.

I believe this is exactly how Leland ranks.

I always take it into account as an important credential
But don’t just automatically move a winner over a loser as an outright rule.

As I said
That was the first and only fight Tito won since 2006, and that was Ken Shammy.
Bader was on an undefeated 12 fight roll (including Jardine and Nog) before losing to the #1 guy.
I don’t look at beating someone as rightfully overtaking all their accomplishments.

Tito beat Bader.
Surely that suggests he’s the better fighter and thus should be ranked higher?
As for Sergei, those wins were years ago. He’s lost since.
I don't think so at all
That’s like applying MMA Math. “He beat that guy, so he could beat everyone that guy beat”.
If you paired Bader and Tito with all the top 10 fighters, I think Bader would have significantly more success, and thus deserves to be ranked higher.
