The mystery behind UFC 117
Obvious or not so ...
After the debacle of UFC 112, Anderson Silva was on the verge of being cut from the UFC if he ever put up another performance like the one he had in Abu Dhabi.
So what is a spider to do?
How can one regain a following?
Here is my theory on UFC 117. If A.S. simply came out and smashed Sonnen in under 3 minutes, while it would have been impressive, it may not have won over any fans who already despise his crazy antics.
Solution!
Allow Sonnen to "expose" the spider. A.S. would have to battle back from adversity. He would appear simply mortal then overcome all obstacles and somehow win in stunning fashion when the decision was clearly in the books for Sonnen.
With A.S. skill set I do not think it is out of the realm of possiblity that he allowed Sonnen to control the fight only to snatch it away from him at the last round like a gangsta from São Paulo.

I will go so far as to say that he expected to be on his back a lot, and the guy did call his shot, submitting Chael like he said he would. But with only two minutes left, he just pulled that one out of his ass. And Chael Sonnen is too fucked up inside to really want to be champ. He needed to lose as much as Anderson needed to win.

Even Chael himself admits he's got problems with winning sometimes.

From May 2010's FIGHT! Magazine:
"I just didn’t know how to train or how to peak," he says. "I was 29 or 30 years old before I got that part down. There was something happening mentally. I would be winning, but then start looking for a way out."
Admittedly, his greatest obstacle was himself. Sonnen began his career 5-0, but struggled against elite competition. The low point: a third loss to Jeremy Horn at UFC 60. At 14-8-1, Sonnen questioned whether he could continue as a mediocre fighter.
"I was absolutely devastated," Sonnen says. "I needed professional help. I’ve never been knocked out, never been TKO’d. I‘ve never been dominated, I‘ve never had anyone throw me down and beat me up, I‘ve never been out-struck, I’ve never been out wrestled, I‘ve never been out-anything. But somewhere in the second round, I’d check out. I’d start questioning myself. ‘Do I have enough energy? Can I go on?’ Stuff everybody has to deal with, but I wasn’t dealing with it right."

Thanks. That's what I was looking for.
He has some kind of underdog mentality, where if he accomplished his goal in something, he wouldn’t know what to do with himself. So he self-sabotages.

The article does go on to say that he'd gone on to see a sports psychiatrist...
…and that it helped him out, but still. If something’s that strongly engrained, it’s a hell of a hard time to reverse that.
Also, I don’t remember hearing it myself, but it’s been said on BE – didn’t Lindland tell Chael not to quit and to stay focused (or something like that) between rounds at UFC 117?

Yes, before the final round.
It sounded like he was the one losing the fight. They were trying to pump him up, saying you can do this, there’s no pain, five more minutes, don’t quit. It was weird, like they all knew he was done or something. Meanwhile, Anderson was bouncing around, looking fresh, exhorting the crowd to make noise. Just a crazy, crazy moment.

Okay, good, I'm not imagining things.
But the fact that his teammates had to pump him up, even they know he’s got motivation/self-esteem/something issues.
Not that that’s the sole reason for his loss – credit where credit’s due to Anderson – but it sure as hell didn’t help.

Self-loathing is one of those rare individual beliefs that seems to be almost universally justified…and Sonnen has loads of it.
I wrote before the Anderson fight here that this “quality” plus Anderson’s heart of a champion would lead to Sonnen likely being choked out.
In his heart-of-hearts he knows that he is not worthy of being champion…

Yeah I know we've had this discussion a couple of times...
but I really don’t see anything to make me think he’s changed. The TRT thing, the IRS issues, seems he just keeps on the same track. He’s not exactly a spring chicken anymore either. Not over the hill, but he’s been out for a while, he’s not fighter-young anymore. I have a feeling Brian Stann knocks him out, and he never gets back to the top of the division again.

Wrong. Chael has basically admitted as much.

Conspiracy theory number 2:-
Silva was pissed at the “you can get a Noguera black belt outta happy meal” comment so he let Sonnen take him down repeatedly because he was determined to submit the guy. That’s why he held up his black belt at the end of the fight.
I would love it if this was actually true.

I'd believe this more than the theory in the main article.

and so gavest away thy sword:
but when Muspell's sons through the dark forest ride,
thou, unhappy, wilt not have wherewith to fight."

This is not pro wrestling.
This is real fighting. Two men throwing their bones at high velocities and with dangerous power.
Bones. Bones covered in just enough flesh and muscle to prevent cuts and lacerations and breaks to would render limbs useless.
Moves are withheld in professional wrestling. It’s beneficial to careers to do so. But never in mixed martial arts. There is no plotting. No scheming, it’s too unpredictable.
Such a silly and pointless question. There’s no getting around this one. You will be mocked for this.
See
I would normally agree with that but Chael has never been a hard puncher or capable of knocking people out anywhere he can rock em but not finish and his jitz is horrible

I'd probably buy it
For some reason his comeback felt less genuine that other comebacks I’d seen.
It was amazing and I was stoked he won…but for some reason it felt like he probably could have thrown that up at almost any point that Chael was in his guard and secured it…I think he waited out a little bit

If anything, I think he didn’t want Chael to be on guard for it until he was tired, and Anderson thought he could slap it on quickly. Kind of a rope-a-dope sorta thing. It was a strange fight. Anderson was marked up a bit, but he still looked far fresher than Chael at the end. Meanwhile, as discussed above, Chael’s corner was begging him to hang in there, to not quit, to give them five more minutes, before the final round. That was some crazy drama in play that night.

Indeed
And I remember the moment early in the 4th where Anderson dropped Sonnen with a slick elbow, and then kinda waited…normally you would expect a guy to throw a follow-up shot fairly quickly…but Anderson kind of waited, pressed in close, and Chael flipped him.
I believe he was also very dead set on scoring a submission victory because of what Chael had said about the Nogueira brothers.

It wouldn’t shock me. Anderson is not like the others:)

You know if it were
anyone else, and I mean anyone else, I would totally disregard this theory but as we’ve seen with Anderson he simply does what he wants when he wants as the baddest man on the planet
