This Saturday at UFC 134, #10 Brendan Schaub looks to continue his climb up the rankings against #11 Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.

The Strikeforce: Heavyweight Grand Prix Semifinals will feature #9 Josh Barnett vs. #13 Sergei Kharitonov as they battle for the right to take on the winner of #5 Antonio Silva vs. #20 Daniel Cormier. I think we can all agree that Cormier vs. Kharitonov is the finals matchup we've all been rooting for all along.

Finally, UFC 135 will close out the month with #16 Travis Browne vs. Rob Broughton and #22 Ben Rothwell vs. Mark Hunt.

Star-divide

Based on the premise that all MMA rankings are subjective but that it’s still useful and informative to know who the online MMA community as a whole ranks as the best fighters in MMA, we collect and average the rankings of the top MMA websites to produce our consensus rankings. We compile the top MMA rankings from each of our sources and award 25 points for a first place ranking, 16 for a 10th place ranking, 1 for a 25th place ranking. A formula is used to "normalize" the data so all fighters are awarded points from those lists that do not include a full 25 fighters. This formula ensures that each ranking site awards the same number of total points regardless of how many fighters they choose to rank. Each fighter’s total is divided by the number of possible points to determine their standing in the Consensus Rankings.

ah the standard trolling that is a few of the ballots in here

also lol at fedor falling all the way to #12. I love watching the dude fight, but the tears of his fans are just as good that I don’t mind, win or lose.

I am surprised the LHW outliers haven’t just moved up to HW to capture the HW crown then?? Should be a cake walk and with no weight cut to boot!

If heavyweight isn't the toughest division in the UFC, then why doesn't someone that can kick their asses move to it? They don’t even have to cut weight!!

Hendo could easily roll with most heavyweights and their shitty cardio. I’d love to see him fight Frank Mir.

My thoughts exactly

Seeing Cole Konrad on this list makes me cringe. I feel like the bottom 10 could be on a season of TUF compared to other divisions.

by Luffmania on Aug 26, 2011 1:54 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

That always sticks out when checking the rankings further down than top 10. I guess top 15 is OK. But beyond that, it’s just awful. I like Cormier but other than that the 15-25 range is pathetic.

by Horselover Fat on Aug 26, 2011 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions

HW is always going to be bad just because the majority of the population of humans don’t fall into that weight/height category and even less of them are capable of being athletic.

145/155 are pretty much the prime divisions as far as standard human configurations go.

Reem being number 3 is just ridiculous to me.

I just don’t see how his resume justifies him being that high but what do I know!

I don't even agree with #3

But in the shallow HW division its not totally out of line.

That said, if you have Overeem over Cain or JDS you are stupid.

Which is borderline maniacal

Actually it is maniacal.

I went whale watching the other day. I think. There were a lot of people in that lake.

by SSreporters on Aug 26, 2011 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, let's see...

Overeem is 9-0-1 over the last 3 years (aside from Lesnar and Fedor he is the only one to even face 3 top-10 opponents during that span, and the only one not to lose to at least one of them) he decisioned the consensus #3 fighter and utterly wrecked two then #8 fighters (Cro Cop and Rogers, although the Cro Cop fight was declared an NC).

Besides, aside from JDS, all of the UFC top-10 guys rankings were built on a foundation of Mir and Zombie-Nog.

So, particularly in the tissue thin HW division, it is easily justified.

is it bad that the only part of this article that made me giddy

was being reminded that Mark Hunt is fighting soon?

Yes. Should be dropped off the list pretty soon, he won’t be fighting for a long time.

au contraire! he very well may get into a fight in prison, you never know.

Would it still be at heavyweight, though?

Or would they all be openweight fights?

Russow only has one loss to Kharitonov

and is on a 10-fight win streak, the latest being Jon Madsen who turned out to be a pretty decent HW.

I did drop Rogers completely though.

No big problems with this list.

Fedor could fall a little farther, IMO. Probably to the 15 range.

I’d also have Dave Herman in instead of Pat Barry, but that ins’t a big deal.

by dpk875 on Aug 26, 2011 7:24 PM EDT reply actions

I have Herman at 22

But Barry at 16 behind Kongo and Travis Browne at 17.

LOL HW Rankings!
