UFC Returns to Brazil in 2012, Planning Open-Air Card in Manaus
Without even completing the fights this weekend, the UFC has already tentatively scheduled a return to the country in August 2012. The location was decided after the Governor of Amazonas Omar Aziz met with UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta. Omar Aziz provided the following quote on the Government's website:
Imagine this whole contingent of people in the world knowing Manaus and the Amazon. It brings a great legacy to our city.
The governor is referring to the massive amount of MMA fans that the UFC has the ability to reach with a combination of their broadcasting deals. The plans for the show are to not hold it in an arena but outside in the area the city holds its yearly Carnival festival. There is also no word on if the card will be a PPV or a fight night, however to put things into perspective here is a picture of the planned location...
Judging from the sheer size of this location, the UFC must have some major plans for this card. The Sambodromo can hold up to 100,000 people which means the UFC anticipates a massive audience to break their attendance record. And if they can get that many Brazilians in one location? This could go down as one of the greatest atmospheres in combat sports history.
Manaus isn't the location in Brazil that many expected. Sao Paulo is the eight largest city in the world and would yield the greatest opportunity for a sell out crowd. The city also has three soccer stadiums. As the event grows near expect some major updates from Bloodyelbow.com.

What the hell is a Sambadoma?
It’s called Sambodromo. C’mon BE, you can do better than that.
That's...an interesting idea.
Don’t think it makes a hell of a lot of sense, but it’s interesting.
What everyone needs to do is calm down, take a deep breath, and prepare their bodies for the Thunderdome.

OH MY GOD
How will they get it to work?
I went whale watching the other day. I think. There were a lot of people in that lake.
Manaus holds a large contingent of very wealthy and influential people. There would be plenty of $ behind this (tentative) decision.

That's what a lot of people are already saying
That the city has made a financial bid to hold the event.

Not sure how the weather is in Brazil
but i’m not a big fan of open air events. Especially if it’s hot and humid outside or cold and windy.
I'm not really a fan of
The fighters having to deal with outdoor conditions but this would still be awesome.

Main event
Lion vs Elephant.

Lion is overrated. Most of his wins were against overmatched Christians.

Yeah…. I’m pretty sure this is going to be a major PPV show. I find it highly unlikely that the UFC would take a show with the highest attendance in company history and deem it a Fight Night show.
The nice thing about Brazil is that, unlike the UFCs other international markets, it shares time zones with the USA. Doing live PPV events from Brazil is no problem.
depends on the date
sometimes we can be within three hours difference with our capital time and the US’. I have suffered staying up to 5 in the morning sometimes watching the UFC and the post fight PCs.
not always will those who dumps on you be your enemies

That's the same
as Arizona, and the West Coast of the USA during the Spring and Summer. No biggie.
That is what he is saying
Brazil has weird timezones and weirder daylight savings laws. The time difference fluctuates.

This could be very sweet
or very sour. Puns aside, outdoor events, especially in a tropical environment are dicey at best.

That would be insane.
Imagine near 100,000 Brazilians(add salt and pepper) going crazy for a big fight! It could be the biggest thing to happen in MMA.

WOW WHAT AN OPPORTUNITY
For both the UFC and Brazil. HERE. WE. GO. Our action is brought to you by antartica (or skol)
Iron Man in Brazil?
What are the odds Chael’s on that card? That would be awesome.
About the same odds that there is a BOPE sniper in a building a half mile away!!!

You want the biggest show in the history of combat sports?
GSP hammerstomps Diaz, gets bored, decides to kill Chris Leben in his 185 debut, and then fights Anderson Silva in the main event of UFC 1?? in Manaus.
I went whale watching the other day. I think. There were a lot of people in that lake.
GSP would redefine cautious if he fought Leben in his MW debut.
It would look like Kos/Daley.
What everyone needs to do is calm down, take a deep breath, and prepare their bodies for the Thunderdome.

Leben is slow
GSP would probably jab-and-takedown the entire fight.
I went whale watching the other day. I think. There were a lot of people in that lake.
Who knows though.
Maybe he’d try and GNP him out to avoid getting zombie KO’d. I never know what to expect from him anymore.

Don't you at least expect him to win? ;)
If he gets by Diaz then his WW reign is officially pointless. Condit is probably a lesser version of Nick.
I went whale watching the other day. I think. There were a lot of people in that lake.
His WW reign is pointless?
That’s just silly. Proving repeatedly that you are head and shoulders the best fighter ever at your weightclass is anything but pointless and the insinuation that it is is pretty insulting.

First off, RIP Layton. As a semi-follower of Canadian politics he was a good guy
Secondly, I’m not criticizing GSP, I’m saying that after the Diaz fight he’ll have run out of credible challengers (and that includes Fitch, who isn’t going to be credible the 2nd time around).
And I say this as someone who is not 100% GSP vs. ANDERSON MUST HAPPEN!
I went whale watching the other day. I think. There were a lot of people in that lake.
As somebody who really wanted Anderson/GSP
I think Condit’s a pretty good test.

I've lived in Layton's riding for the past 6 years
I’ve had the privelege to have met him on numorous occasions and I’ve been crushed by his passing.

Condit is nowhere near a lesser version of Diaz.
They are completely different fighters with different strenths and weaknesses. Condit may lose to GSP but I think he would put on an exciting fight and have a decent shot at winning.

The thing I like about both Condit and Diaz fighting GSP is that after GSP clearly outclasses them in the first round they will still keep coming, I am of the belief that half the reason GSP fights can be boring is that his opponents just shell up right away and stop looking to win after they find out how good he is. Niether Condit or Diaz will do that IMO
Both guys are better on their feet than on the mat, but neither has a lick of takedown defense and Condit isn’t anywhere near as good off his back as Diaz. Plus – Diaz is argurably the better striker. Condit is much more of a traditional boxer/MT guy than Diaz but both eat punches and neither can stop the shot. Besides, Condit isn’t beating Penn.

Sambodrome a terrible location to hold an MMA event
That Sambodrome is in the style of the roman hippodromes. This kind of coliseum is great for parade and race style events that require a long, linear path for viewing. The UFC, however, uses a small, stationary spot, so the vast majority of the seating is completely useless. No matter where they locate the octagon (the most efficient spot would be at one of the ends where the stands make a U), the most seating that will have any acceptable view is prob 1/4 of the total.
unless of course....
The UFC goes a little bat-shit awesome, and puts the octagon on a moving rail system so over the course of one round, it moves from 1 end to the other.
the U end is probably how they're going to go

Considering the digs that Jungle Fight has used in the same town, this is probably the only acceptable venue to run the event should the town’s financial leaders be looking to put in a site fee to have a show. Still – It is Brazil, and even with the money there, ticket prices will have to be lower than they would generally be in the US. It will be a temporary venue with all sorts of theoretical problems stemming from that. And most importantly, it may not ever really happen. Dana’s had lots of pie in the sky ideas. This could be another.
Still waiting for the UFC to go to Scotland and Sweden like they planned....
I went whale watching the other day. I think. There were a lot of people in that lake.
Sweden is still rumored for end of the year this year
Scotland…. yea not so much

Sweden is dead in the water. I don’t think anyone is seriously expecting that show, especially since we’re already damn near in September.

That card is off due to something or the other
It appears the Euro cards for the last few years have been entirely dependent on whether or not Spike TV has 8-11 PM blocked off on their schedules.
And off-topic, will those continue? Will we see the UK shows on delay on FX?
I went whale watching the other day. I think. There were a lot of people in that lake.
I'd definitely fly to Sweden
But the point is the UFC has made several plans to go abroad and not all of them pan out.
I went whale watching the other day. I think. There were a lot of people in that lake.
Do you read the article?
It’s not the UFC making these claims.
" Its like when I'm right I'm right, when I'm wrong I coulda been right, so I'm still right cause I coulda been wrong, you know, and I'm sorry cause I could be wrong right now, I could be wrong, but I'm right..." Bama
There was an article in today’s “Journal do Commercio” in Recife saying one of the events would be in the Northeast… quoting Mario Yamaski:
“Acho que o Nordeste deve entrar na rota do UFC, mas não me arrisco a dizer em que cidade.”and the article goes on to compare the 3 potential cities, Recife, Fortalez, and Natal, and basically says that Fortaleza is the only city that really is close to the infrastructure they’d need for this kind of event.
“I think the Northeast must enter the UFC rotation, but I dare not say in which city.”
Seems like wishful thinking, honestly. There’s just so much more money in the South.

with the way the arenas shaped
i wonder if they would pull off two octogon cages in on arena. 2cage1arena.

....And here comes our first ever SPLIT SCREEN fight card
In cage 1 it’s Jose Aldo against Hatsu Hioki for the FW title. In cage 2 it’s Anderson Silva vs. GSP for the middleweight title.
I went whale watching the other day. I think. There were a lot of people in that lake.
And if GSP was on one of those
At least we could watch an exciting fight at the same time.
Just Breed!

My eyes would be glued to the GSP fight
Anderson KOs are always exciting.
Head conductor of the Charles Oliveira hype train.
Manaus is a wierd venue
Had thye anticipated the demand they would of packed the Engenhão and the Estádio do Morumbi in Sao Paulo would be a much better venue than that hippodrome for the next show.
http://unintelligentdefense.blogspot.com
Manaus is too far away...
…from brazilian southeast, the only rich part in the country. To fly from Sao Paulo to Manaus is almost as expensive as is flying to the USA. Unless they low drastically the price of the UFC tickets, witch are way out of what brazilians are used to pay to see an international event (music gigs included) they are not going to be able to sell it out.
Open air!
Let’s put BJ Penn, Karlos Vemola, Shane Carwin, and a shit ton of other cardio freaks on this one!
Let the fighters fight, let the referees ref, but dear God, don't let the judges judge.
I'd fly from Sao Paulo to Manaus for that.
Manaus is an awesome place. There’s nothing like that place in the world.
If this materializes… that’s a great opportunity for you guys to get to know the Amazon.
Yeah.. this isn’t going to happen. Seems like empty talk, and it’s not even from the UFC, but from some local politician guy. Seems like a very strange choice of venue and location.
