There's good news for UFC middleweight, Kyle Noke, after finding himself on the wrong end of an inverted heel hook from Ed Herman at UFC on Versus 5.
Noke's manager revealed to MMA Weekly that the Australian's knee did not suffer any fractures or tears, with an MRI showing only a sprain. Noke should be able to resume training after a few weeks of rehab.

Kneebars and kneebar/toe hold from side control/knee on belly…toe holds and straight ankle locks if you’re standing in someone’s open guard…
yea.....
I like the open guard, standing ankle lock and hoist them over on to their belly and kneel on their thigh, gimmick.
But everything else you are leaving a striking position to go to a sub. Why not sub from the top and strike while doing it? Never letting their torso off the mat.

Now that you know where I’m coming from though, wasn’t that a fantastic joke?
However, here’s some beef I do have re: ankle locks… If we’re too afraid to practice them(at BJJ schools), how are we (fighters) supposed to defend them in competitions where they’re legal?

i only train them with two dudes.
Gotta have a lot of trust for that .

In my humble blue belt opinion...
…you should practice them, but only at certain levels and above (i.e. seasoned blue belts and up). At my school, certain guys will put them on (and only in no-gi), but will not torque at all. Too risky.
As per Stephan Kesting...
One recommended option is to skip heel hooks and toeholds till at least brown or black belt, but to include kneebars and straight ankle locks. That way you get to practice applying and defending a similar method of control (parallel with the foot and facing the foot) without the knee-twisting danger.
I think that's fine...
…for grapplers, but for MMAists, I think it’s crazy to not train heel hooks until brown belt.
Yeah, I’m with beeran, you gotta train them at some level to know how to defend them—obviously without the twisty bits applied with force.

Good!
Noke is easily one of the more likable fighters to come out of the house in the last couple of seasons. Was really pulling for him against Herman.
