Strikeforce Targeting Gina Carano's Return in December

Gina Carano is happy to make weight. Photo by Esther Lin for Showtime

It's been two months since we last heard from Gina Carano. After pulling out of her scheduled bout against Sarah D'Alelio, Carano's camp released the following cryptic statement:

"Gina is feeling much better after having undergone some medical attention and is looking forward to getting back into training very soon. She would like to express thanks to Team Jackson for a wonderful training camp, Strikeforce, and the fans."

That statement sent off rounds of speculation about the "medical attention" needed that forced her to pull out.

According to Dave Meltzer at the Wrestling Observer, the media will have the opportunity to skirt the issue this December. From yesterday's update:

The December Strikeforce show is set for 12/17. Gilbert Melendez vs. Jorge Masvidal for the lightweight title plus Gina Carano are targeted for that show.

Carano hasn't fought since losing to Cris "Cyborg" Santos in August of 2009. She appears in the Steven Soderbergh film Haywire, which is set to be released in the United States in January of 2012.

A weight cutting issue. Or she could easily be hiding something doping related.

Hep C. Then there is Morrissinian Aids. Staph. Or she was sucking so bad in camp she needed to cancel her fight.

Could be a lot of things.

Would she be allowed back if it was doping? Look at Marquardt. Also, I don’t know everything about Hepatitis but if I’m not mistaken that’s something she would not be allowed back in this time frame for. Staph seems like something inconsequential enough to share with the public and sucking in camp doesn’t make you fail your medicals. Also it’s pretty easy for her to say “I had a bad weight cut.”

I suspect Bieber was referring to her own people’s test being positive, or her just knowing. Not at all suggesting that she is one of the majority of professional combat sports participants (or NFL/NBA players) who use some form of PED, but if she does, surely she is one of the probably 90%+ (of those who use) who have private testing done prior to official tests being done if they have any question at all about passing (and often even if they don’t).

Post traumatic stress disorder after the Cyborg fight!

I was thinking the same thing.

If Rousey gets a few more quality wins, she may be the first fighter to look like a credible threat to Cyborg. Which is more than can be said for Carano at this point.

by Damnatio Memoriae on Aug 21, 2011 6:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Yiep, that would be a great fight in the future.

But I also thought that Carano looked very good against Cyborg. I think better than all other Strikeforce opponents. Maybe she can exceed that level with the help of Greg Jacko.

Maybe

And I certainly want her to be successful, but she’s coming off a loss and a 2 year layoff, so I think she needs to look really good in a couple fights before anybody talks about her being in title contention again. Of course, the way things are going, that may end up happening in Bellator, for all we know.

by Damnatio Memoriae on Aug 21, 2011 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Rousey could be a problem

Submission specialists are always a problem for anyone, and the way things look now, that’s what it’ll take to take down Cyborg. That said, someone like Gina or Nunes, if their game was crisp enough, might have a shot.

If not, Father Time will get Cris eventually. ;)

by shim23 on Aug 23, 2011 2:22 AM EDT up reply actions

I think that Rousey is very good, but there are still things about her that I need to see. She was really forcing that clinch in an unprotected way, for example. Her armbars are awesome though. She is an Olympic caliber athlete, young, and attractive.
I’m thinking that Gina will get Sarah D’Alelio or someone coming off a loss but isn’t too dangerous. Someone like Germaine de Randamie would be a very dangerous opponent for her.

I really haven’t seen Gina go for an offensive takedown though. Her base is in muay thai, and it looks like she’s just very comfortable there. I know that Julia Budd just took down and grinded de Randamie, but I just have a hard time seeing Gina doing that.

It exists for sure. Also, I like that her go-to move when she’s on her back is the rubber guard and even attempts gogoplatas from there.

This other chick has zero ground game though.

Gina with Jackson’s help would use her knowledge of countering and timing to integrate takedowns into fights with dangerous strikers like this that await Gina.

by Urijah Bieber on Aug 22, 2011 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions

She wouldn't need to

Gina’s a striker. One of the best when she’s at the top of her game.

by shim23 on Aug 23, 2011 2:17 AM EDT up reply actions

Only until the ring rust is gone

After that, it’s a matter of how well Rousey can stand up to an elite striker, which she has yet to face. Nunes or Cyborg would be other opportunities for her. But once Carano comes back with a few fights under her belt (assuming she’s roughly the same fighter she was), I don’t see why she’d shy away from or even be an underdog to Rousey.

by shim23 on Aug 23, 2011 2:16 AM EDT up reply actions

I hope she returns and is successful.

With so many free TV spots to fill in the Fox deal, someone like Gina would be very valuable. Unique draws like that with crossover appeal would appeal to Fox.

by Urijah Bieber on Aug 21, 2011 5:21 PM EDT reply actions

With so many free TV spots to fill in the Fox deal

This is going off-topic, but this is a huge misconception.

The deal was for two seasons of TUF a year (same as before; only difference is all the fights after the ones to get into the house are live), 4 free events on Fox (same as on Versus, only bigger names), 2 TUF Finales a year (same as before), and 4 UFN-type events on FX a year (same as they’re doing now on Spike). Meanwhile they’re reducing the number of total PPVs from 15 to 13 next year. They are probably going to try and make 12 fights-per-event the norm but overall they are actually doing fewer fights next year than this year.

Believe me I would love to see the UFC do 36 shows next year and have two complete women’s divisions (or three even) to compliment eight men’s divisions with all of the UFC-level fighters from Strikeforce in one complete major league, but it apparently isn’t going to happen yet.

by Chromium on Aug 21, 2011 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions

There are different requirements to filling a spot on Fox and filling a spot on Vs.

by Phildo on Aug 21, 2011 6:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, the Fox deals will definitely require higher profile main-events but they’re doing two fewer PPVs next year. While adding supposedly adding a new weight-division with Flyweights. I really don’t see the point of bringing Gina Carano over unless she has a division to fight in and a title to ostensibly strive for, and adding a women’s division would only exacerbate the looming roster size problem. I’m also not in favor of a mass culling of talent to make room.

by Chromium on Aug 21, 2011 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions

If so I think the number of shows they will do next year will be the same except 2 ppvs will be fights on fx

Probably the same caliber as when spike gets a numbered event , example leban vs munoz in the UK.

by #1 piggy on Aug 21, 2011 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions

This is incorrect. They are doing 4 UFNs and 2 TUF Finales. Also they are doing one Fox show this year. They also may or may not add another show this year in late December. As of right now they’re doing 3-4 fewer shows next year. And adding a Flyweight division.

by Chromium on Aug 24, 2011 5:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Curious timing

Couldn’t this potentially be the final strikeforce event, if they don’t renew with Showtime/make other plans to keep them around?

Either way, i’m sure the ZUFFA folks are curious to see how much media attention they can muster (with her involved), when they’re calling the shots.

by woooburn on Aug 21, 2011 5:24 PM EDT reply actions

The actual rumor is she dropped approximately 35 lbs. of actual weight (as opposed to water weight, which is NOT THE SAME THING) during her camp and her personal doctor advised her against fighting, even though she was medically cleared by the state athletic commission. Technically she would be at an increased risk of concussion or other head trauma, I suppose.

General physicians tend to be more timid than sports doctors when it comes to people fighting for a living, but if a doctor tells someone “don’t do this, you’re at an increased risk for brain damage” how do you think most people would react? She probably freaked out a bit and didn’t know better.

by Chromium on Aug 21, 2011 5:31 PM EDT reply actions

Are you saying that she dieted down 35 pounds of fat and muscle prior to her water cut and her doctor wouldn’t permit it?

Can’t be that much. Rampage doesn’t even need to diet down that much after he balloons up.

by Schwizzles on Aug 21, 2011 5:57 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Mostly fat. The rumor was she came into the training camp at 190 lbs. Which is as much as she weighed prior to getting into Muay Thai. Keep in mind that she finished filming her movie over a year ago so most of her weight gain would have come after that.

by Chromium on Aug 21, 2011 6:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I stand corrected. If that’s the case she must have been miserable. I can’t imagine what it’s like to have to starve yourself for months while putting in multiple grueling workouts in a day. I know that all combat sports athletes need to make huge sacrifices, but that would be super extreme.

by Schwizzles on Aug 21, 2011 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions

The easiest way to avoid those sacrifices is to stay in shape even when you’re not in camp. If people that have to sit at a desk 8 hours a day can stay in decent shape, there’s no reason that someone whose whole job revolves around it shouldn’t be able to.

by Damnatio Memoriae on Aug 21, 2011 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Her job _didn't_ revolve around it anymore

She went to Hollywood, made a film, didn’t do anything after that for like a year.

who cares.

I’m so tired of “The Return of Gina Carano” overshadowing things that are actually relevant. Gilbert Melendez, one of the worlds top LW’s will fight, and Strikeforce wants to advertise Gina. Great, thanks guys. Business as usual indeed.

No sir, I don't like it.

by OmoPlata on Aug 22, 2011 8:25 AM EDT reply actions

Agreed. Who cares. I’d rather see the return of Kimbo Slice in the UFC than Gina Carano fighting for anything Zuffa related.

by Shnak on Aug 22, 2011 9:04 AM EDT up reply actions

I’d rather see Cyborg fight. At least its someone that i know is extremely talented.

Who cares anymore about Carano. I bet her movie is going to suck too.

can't share these negative feelings

Carano was a great talent and great for the sport. Nothing but love for Gina.

by Urijah Bieber on Aug 22, 2011 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Gina's path

A few matches against mid-level opponents to get rid of ring rust/see where she stands. If she wins those, take out Budd, Rousey and Nunes on the way to Cyborg. She’s probably never gonna out-strike Cyborg, and would have to change her game considerably to go in there thinking submission (it could happen, just not as a gameplan), but she probably has enough power to make Cyborg feel it (if anyone does, anyway), and if she can keep away from Cris and use those kicks and jabs, I think she’d have a legitimate shot at beating her.

Of course, that’s a whole lot of ifs.

by shim23 on Aug 23, 2011 2:20 AM EDT reply actions

In fact

A Carano-Nunes fight could be VERY interesting in a year or so.
