Bellator 48 Results: Pat Curran Knocks Out Marlon Sandro, Wins Featherweight Tournament

It was an evening that most fans felt would lack the excitement to entertain. After all, Bellator 48's main card lineup didn't look very intriguing at a cursory glance. The featherweight tournament final featuring Pat Curran vs. Marlon Sandro was the most enticing match-up on the card, but a supporting cast of Cole Konrad vs. Paul Buentello, Seth Petruzelli vs. Ricco Rodriguez, and relatively unknown lightweights Rene Nazare and Juan Barrantes weren't leading to a stampede of fans rushing to their televisions. Unfortunately for those who passed on Saturday night's action from the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, the assumption that this card couldn't deliver was blown out of the water by solid performances and highlight reel finishes.

In the main event of the evening, former Bellator lightweight contender Pat Curran battled former Sengoku featherweight champion Marlon Sandro in the Bellator 2011 Summer Series Featherweight Tournament Final. Curran had impressively submitted Luis Palomino at Bellator 46, and he edged British veteran Ronnie Mann on the scorecards at Bellator 47 to earn his shot against Sandro, who narrowly edged Genair da Silva and defeated Nazareno Malegarie at the same events respectively.

Many fans were under the assumption that Curran wouldn't be able to hang with the heralded striking skills of Marlon Sandro. Sandro had made quite a name for himself by crushing the opposition in Japan, knocking out multiple opponents during his reign under the Sengoku banner. The hype was certainly overwhelming for Sandro, but Curran's technically sound striking game and ability to adjust in the middle of the fight helped him cap off an impressive tournament win on Saturday night.

Curran knocked out Sandro at the 4:00 mark of the second round with a shocking head kick that left the former Sengoku champion limp on the canvas. For the first nine minutes of the fight, Sandro was controlling the tempo, landing the better punches, and proving that his power, even when blocked by Curran's defenses, was enough to steal rounds. He aggressively lunged in at Curran, throwing a straight punch-overhand combination that Curran seemed hesitant to counter. When Curran was on the defensive, his lacking head movement and inability to pull the trigger left him beaten and battered as the fight progressed. In a nutshell, Pat Curran wasn't well on his way to victory before crushing the dreams of Marlon Sandro.

That's mixed martial arts, fight fans. The unpredictability of the sport is one of the many reasons why fans love this sport, and Pat Curran showed that on Saturday night. Sandro, who got more comfortable as the fight progressed, bobbed and weaved away from Curran before being zapped by the kick, allowing Curran's patience to finally pay off. Curran now moves on to face the winner of a Bellator featherweight title match between Patricio Freire and Joe Warren, a match-up that has yet to be announced.

In the evening's other match-ups, two-time NCAA Division I wrestling champion and current Bellator heavyweight kingpin Cole Konrad kept his unblemished record intact by defeating UFC and Strikeforce veteran Paul Buentello via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28). The bout was booed by the fans in attendance loudly for the first two rounds of action, mainly due to Buentello's hesitance to engage and Konrad's lacking technical skills standing. Surprisingly, Konrad was able to out strike Buentello on the feet, and he secured the victory in the third round after glancing a blow off Buentello's chin and following him to the ground. Buentello was able to get one last chance in the final minute of the fight after the referee stood the fighters back to their feet, but it was too little, too late for the UFC veteran.

The man who many consider to be the reason for EliteXC's eventual demise, Seth Petruzelli, shocked oddsmakers as he crushed former UFC champion Ricco Rodriguez in catchweight action. Rodriguez was unable to mount any sort of offense against Petruzelli in the opening round, lumbering around the cage and attempting to find holes in Petruzelli's defenses. Petruzelli answered with spinning kicks and front kicks to keep Rodriguez at bay, nearly digging a heel into the jawline of Rodriguez on multiple occasions. An attempt to clinch was met by a short right hand that dropped Rodriguez a little over four minutes into the round, and Petruzelli finished up the assault with hammerfists from the top that caused the stoppage.

In the opening bout of the Bellator 48 main card, highly-credentialed Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Rene Nazare defeated Juan Barrantes in lightweight action. The grappling whiz, who is the head BJJ instructor at Team Bombsquad in Ithaca, New York, came out strong, going toe-to-toe and landing the better shots on the feet in the opening round. The second round was more of the same early, but Nazare transitioned to the ground, cutting up Barrantes from half guard with sharp elbows and ground n' pound from top control. An eye injury that Barrantes received in the first round became worse as the fight progressed, and the doctor stepped in to stop the fight between the second and third rounds as Barrantes was unable to see.

Currans best bet

Is to start early, light Warren up on the feet and if Pat can drop him go for a sub.

Warrens biggest strength (after his wrestling) is his insane ability to take huge shots and recover in a matter of seconds. There is no point to pouring so much energy into a 10-8 round only to have it bite you in the ass when you can’t do it again and now have to fight off your back.

Konrad/Buentello fight was really, really bad. Buentello and Ricco Rodriguez… time to hang it up for the love of GOD man! You are both taking paychecks your body ain’t able to cash.

If heavyweight isn't the toughest division in the UFC, then why doesn't someone that can kick their asses move to it? They don’t even have to cut weight!!

And yes I know Ricco has a winning streak until this KTFO.

Good for Curran. He was getting edged in the stand up, not as bad as most people were saying IMO. He had a cut so everyone was freaking out and started saying how much he was getting beaten after that. Curran’s plan was to look for openings which there most certainly were, and strike.

It actually shows improvement in Curran stand up

He got his first buzz in his Bellator debut by blasting Ricci with a beautiful counter. And stuck with that style until he faced a higher level striker he couldn’t take or keep down in Alvarez.

Against Sandro he wanted another prime counter shot but was not able to get it in the first round. He was having difficulty landing shots against Sandro because of head movement so he through faked him out with jabs and blasted Marlons bobbing head with a kick.

If anything this fight has shown that if Curran cannot get his counter game going he will force situations where he can create openings.

It also shows how effective the jab can be without even landing.

When

Can somebody head kick Dom Cruz like this? Seems to be asking for it.

I think Friere or Warren would beat Curran, despite his awesome run

by Bravefart on Aug 21, 2011 9:37 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

So true but the tricky part is.

How many kickers are there at 135 that can win enough fights to get to a title shot. Most of the high level fighters at 135 are short wrestlers with stubby legs who mainly box and would likely take said kick fighter down.

The only lanky bantamweight with solid wrestling who likes to throw kicks….is Cruz himself. But it is a sound plan of attack for fighters who routinely use defensive head movement.

The tricky part with Cruz is that he actually throws strikes when moving around, you can’t just charge forward throwing strikes without missing and getting blasted by Cruz’s own counter striking.

People do not like to think. If one thinks, one must reach conclusions. Conclusions are not always pleasant.

Exactly

What I was thinking. Nobody has long enough legs to pop him like that, except for Miguel and Pat. I’d shit myself if DJ caught Dom with a HK

The thing that stood out to me the most was how absolutely awful Ricco and Buentello looked in their respective fights. Ricco was unable to land anything on Petruzelli, mostly he was just standing around and occasionally jumping in with weird punches that didn’t land. He looked slow as hell, and the technique in his hands was severely lacking. I like Seth Petruzelli so it was cool to see him get a win, very nice finish too. I believe it’s very likely he can win their LHW strap if he enters that tournament, because it was total shit last time.

And for Buentello.. man, what a poor performance that was. Konrad treated him to basically two and a half full rounds of stand-up, and what does Buentello do? NOTHING. He just stood there eating a few jabs and leg kicks per round, unable to mount any offense of his own. Pathetic.

I’m not a fan of Curran, but damn that was a nice knock-out. This win should firmly cement him in the top 10 at FW, and I think he’ll stay there for many years to come. If he gets to face Warren for the title, then no doubt I think Curran takes it. Freire could be closer, but I’d probably give Curran the edge there too. Very impressive in his Bellator career so far.

Ricco has looked about the same in all of his fights during his winning streak. His opponents either were so afraid of being taken down that they couldn’t strike with him, or they lacked the takedown defense. Petruzelli wasn’t scared at all, going for crazy spinning kicks that Ricco couldn’t work through.

Buentello was a victim of being scared to be taken down, and for good reason.

Okay, you’re probably right, I’ve only seen maybe one or two of those fights (which were quick finishes). Don’t know what I was expecting really, but he didn’t impress, let’s put it that way.

by Horselover Fat on Aug 21, 2011 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

Keep in mind that Ricco looked horribly out of shape. It was only a matter of time before Seth put him to sleep. He really needs to retire now

Buentello\Konrad match was equally disgusting. I know Buentello is no world beater, but Konrad’s striking is ridiculously awful, along with his equally bad cardio\physique there was no reason Paul couldn’t control this match on his feet. He barely even tried

A couple of good things about the card was that very entertaining Sandro\Curran match. I had Sandro to roll over Curran. And he was for one and a half rounds, until Curran delivered that flash head kick. But as Leland said that’s MMA for ya!
A fantastic match none the less

I was also really impressed by that Lightweight newcomer Rene Nazare. His boxing was extremely powerful. But yet very crisp and precise.

I hope when Bellator starts up their lightweight tourney again, this guys name is added to the list!

I don’t think Ricco was dropped while attempting to clinch. It looked like he attempted some awkward, uncoordinated version of a superman punch and only managed to launch his face into an oncoming fist.

It was a good night of fights. The thing with Curran though, for me at least, is that I honestly wouldn’t pick him to win a rematch against Sandro. It was a great KO and Curran baited Sandro into that head kick (used jabs, saw that he bobs a certain direction, throws head kick), but I have a hard time seeing that replicated. The thing is that Sandro could take the decision, but Curran wouldn’t be able to. Regardless, I look forward to Pat Curran vs the winner of Joe Warren vs Patricio Freire.

I'm sorry

but that Ricco gif makes me giggle the same way seeing Struve get KO’d does. Something about seeing 200+ pounds get stopped in its tracks…just seems to defy physics in a funny way.

Decent night of fights

I watched them at a friends house, he’s a big UFC fan but not so much of MMA overall. So to give him a sense of what was going down, I showed him some youtube videos of some of Sandro’s KO’s…the rest of the night we were jokingly referring to Sandro as ‘The Face Melter’

Nazare put on a good performance, it was cool to see Petruzelli get a nice knockout. Before the fight, he said he’d rather be remembered as the guy who retired Rodriguez then the guy who knocked out Kimbo…so I’m glad he got the win.

Beuntello vs Konrad was not a good fight at all. Virtually all of the fight was standing and Buentello seemed insanely timid and afraid to engage. I mean yeah, you have to worry about the takedown, but throwing virtually nothing isn’t exactly going to help you win either. It was even worse when he got all mad at the end, like he had been lay and prayed the whole time and robbed of his chance to win.

The whole Sandro vs Curran fight felt like it was only a matter of time before there was some ‘face melting’…but we just didn’t think it would be Sandro whose face would be melted. Great finish.

I think Curran beats Warren should Warren win against Freire. I think pitbull wins that fight however, and I think that match-up is pretty even for Curran
