Brock Lesnar Expected to Return to UFC in 2012

Brock Lesnar enters the arena at UFC 116. UFC President Dana White says Lesnar will probably return "the first of the year." Photo courtesy of UFC.com

Amid subtle product placement, Brock Lesnar took to Youtube to announce "I'm back." But that was it. Brock gave no indication of if he was in the gym or when he expected to fight again. (He did, however, shoot a bunch of heavy guns and talked about "animal disintegration.")

MMA Weekly caught up with UFC President Dana White, who shed some light on the former heavyweight champ:

"Brock's gonna get back in the gym in September. Start training again, cause he hasn't done anything since his surgery -- training wise. Brock will probably be back the first of the year."

Some speculation arose that Lesnar would be the man to anchor the UFC's first event on Fox, which they announced would take place on November 12 in Anaheim. You can officially toss his name out of that ring.

Frank Mir has been linked as the most likely opponent for Lesnar's return. That was the UFC's intention before Lesnar's latest round with diverticulitis. Lesnar and Mir split a pair of bouts at UFC 81 and UFC 100.

Everyone wants a piece of Lesnar, you probably get a lot more eyes on you if you fight him

by IRodC on Aug 18, 2011 7:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Honestly, if he stays more active off his back

Lesnar is probably the best fight for Mir in the upper HW echelon, since he’s a better striker and can possibly submit him on the ground. Whereas if he can’t get Overeem, Velasquez, Carwin or dos Santos down, he’s screwed.

Might be true,

but what does that say about how smart the rest of the guys in the division are?

Newsflash: heavyweight cagefighters aren’t rocket scientists.

Frank may not be dumb, but doesn’t have 1/10 the intelligence he thinks he has.

by jhf884 on Aug 19, 2011 10:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Exactly!

I don’t think he wants anymore of that. I don’t mind watching Mir fight but the brock and carwin fights were just awesome in how brutally they ruined him. I think Mir is a good fighter, don’t really care for him and I think a Schaub fight would actually be entertaining.

"The fact that society may find speech offensive is not a sufficient reason for suppressing it. Indeed, if it is the speaker's opinion that gives offense, that consequence is a reason for according it constitutional protection."

by soilworker on Aug 18, 2011 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Totally agree!

Mir should get Schaub, winner gets next title shot (…did I just say that?)
Give Carwin vs Overeem (winner gets Lesnar in early 2012….if Overeem wins, then he get title shot after Mir/Schaub gets theirs…….would this sufficiently piss Overeem off?…if he has to win twice in the UFC before he gets title shot?) and give Big Nog a swan song fight against CroCop.

**This is assuming Schaub beats Nog and Nelson beats CroCop…Nelson gets Rothwell if both win, rematching their IFL fight. Loser of Mir vs Schaub gets loser of Cain vs JDS.

or is JDS just THAT good? Or a bit of both?

Mir will have a better gameplan against Carwin for the rematch, that’s for sure.

Junior is definitely that good.

Carwin was rusty and not in great shape, but even the Carwin who showed up against JDS would still maul Frank. He’s just his physical superior by far. Man vs. Child.

Because the first time out Mir was getting pummeled before he got off the lucky sub, and the second wasn’t even remotely close. As much as i don’t really like Lesnar, i don’t really want to see Mir get his face turned into hamburger again. I’d rather see a fight that looks closer to the “anything can happen” state that attracted me to MMA.

Mir’s knee bar against Lesnar was a super slow and telegraphed attack on the leg that only worked because Lesnar was ridiculously under-informed in jiu jitsu. Despite Mir’s credentials, I don’t really see that happening again, and I’d much rather see someone else capable of punching Lesnar in the face a lot, doing so.

Also, for the average MMA buyer of PPV, the buys had a lot more to do with “Lesnar vs. Anyone” being on the ticket. All of his fights have been huge buys.

by aptar on Aug 18, 2011 8:58 PM EDT up reply actions

And this is where I disagree

I don’t think Lesnar winning the trilogy is a safe bet. While Mir is still a shitty wrestler, his wrestling has improved over the years (just think of the beautiful judo throw he did on Nelson), he used to be a pure jiu jitsu guy but he now has knockout wins over Nogueira (in fact being the first guy to stop Nogueira by strikes), Cro-Cop (although it was “THE WORST FIGHT OF ALL TIMEE!!!!!!” if you started watching UFC when BORCKLSENAAAAR!!! came up..) and almost Cheick Kongo, while giving Carwin a harder time striking than Lesnar ever did.
I know that guy is a douche and his face looks like it’s trying to compete with C.B. Dollaways but I don’t get how you can say he’d be easily defeated by Brock Lesnar.

Schuab should fight Nelson again and Mir should be put up against someone who is dominating right now like Travis Browne. Cro Cop should be fighting Big Nog at 134. If the rumors are true than Brock should fight Overrated..I mean Overeem at UFC 140. Damn, Carwin gets done dirty maybe he could fight Mir again?
