Aaron Rosa vs. Fabio Maldonado Set for UFC on Versus 6

Photo

Aaron Rosa will move back down to his natural weight class of light heavyweight at UFC on Versus 6, and he'll face Fabio Maldonado. Rosa competed at heavyweight at UFC 131, but has spent a lot of his career at 205. UFC.com has it:

Expect a fight to remember when 205-pound bangers Aaron Rosa and Fabio Maldonado meet on October 1st.

"Two exciting light heavyweight sluggers have verbally agreed to throw down October 1st in Washington D.C. as Aaron Rosa takes on Fabio Maldonado," said UFC President Dana White.

Rosa came in at a hefty 261 pounds at UFC 131 for his bout against Joey Beltran, but apparently he will have no issue with getting back to 205. He dropped that bout to Beltran by TKO, but it was a very exciting (if a bit sloppy) brawl that had the crowd on their feet. Maldonado is coming off a spirited decision loss to Kyle Kingsbury at the TUF 13 Finale, which won him a $40,000 fight of the night bonus. The bout is expected to take place on the preliminary portion of the card.

Aaron Rosa (16-4)
Loss Joey Beltran - TKO (Punches) UFC 131
Win Abe Wagner - Submission (Rear Naked Choke) Titan FC 17
Win Devin Cole - Decision (Unanimous) Shark Fights 13

Fabio Maldonado (18-4)
Loss Kyle Kingsbury - Decision (Unanimous) TUF 13 Finale
Win James McSweeney -TKO (Punches) UFC 120
Win Nelson Martins - KO (Punch) FCF 4

Rosa lost via TKO, not decision...your story contradicts your grey quote box.

I’m curious to see Rosa at 205. He was really flabby at HW, but at 205, he’ll be sveldt.

Fabiola is going to test that torso though, and I think Aaron is going down.

Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?

Hah, "test that torso"

So true. Maldonado’s body work was surprising in both technique and tenacity during his fight with Kingsbury. I really enjoyed watching him fight and hope he keeps it up while also finding a way to finish the guy.

He's fought at 205 plenty of times before.

Got smashed by Feijao on Showtime a few years ago.

Rosa better start doing a lot of sit-ups! Thousands of them. Maldonado by TKO.

He may actually want to leave some fat around his stomach to take the brunt of some of the body punches that he’s going to take from Maldonado. Maldonado also has a very good chin.

Ah yes, good point. I figured muscles (abs) would be a good start, but I guess leaving a protective layer of fat on the outside could be helpful as well.

If I recall, Rosa was a late replacement, and his last couple of fights were at HW. He’s fought in LHW in Strikeforce and Bellator.

by jalami on Aug 17, 2011 12:55 PM EDT reply actions

Maldonado via not weighing 260lbs for his last couple of fights.

I seem recall thinking Maldanado looked like he could have been at 185. Don’t think it will matter here though.

by CB_MMA on Aug 17, 2011 1:07 PM EDT reply actions

He should fight at 185, he is too small for LHW.

Maldonado will rip up Rosa’s soft mid-section with those brutal hooks on the inside. I’m looking forward to seeing him again.

maldonado will crush rosa's body

rosa is a brawler and maldonado is a technical striker

and when a brawler fights a technical striker, most of time the brawler gets his ass whooped.

Rosa has a bit of a chance

Mostly because Fabio stills love to brawl, he just has the advantage of having technique on his side. So he could catch Fabio if he gets just a bit careless. That said, Fabio is going to crush Rosa with a beautiful display of bodywork

Fabio is a great fighter

Loved his boxing his last fight, and he looked impressive resisting Kingsbu’s wrestling advantage. I think he’d make a terrifying MW.

Maldonado by murder

Rosa’s not very good.

I went whale watching the other day. I think. There were a lot of people in that lake.

Rosa's gonna get hurt.

I greatly enjoyed the Maldonado / Kingburry scrap

Maldo’s body shots were spectacular and violent, I hope to see that kind of action all over again.

Anyone else been noticing that quality body punches seem to be on the rise lately?

Body punching

Has been utilized in boxing for decades predominantly by Mexican fighters (I believe the hook to the liver is also called the mexican hook)) and Bas in MMA. As the sport evolves (overused term I know) elements of all forms of fighting that are most effective are implemented more and I think fighters see how effective it is. Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. was vicious to the body. Body punches slows your opponant, and brings there hands down, and once your hands are down leaves your face looking like Kingsbury’s and Mcsweeny’s.

Maldonaldo needs to fight at 185

He’s a very talented MMA Boxer. He could really do damage at that weight. Though probably nothing more than an undersized gatekeeper at 205.

I'm really excited to see Maldonado again.

I know he isn’t really a threat to the title at 205 but his style of boxing is fun to watch.

I guess he scored a lot of points with me when he brutalized James Mcsweeny and taunted him the whole way through.

I think the guy can be a credible 205 gatekeeper type

A 205 Joey Beltran if you will.

No way.. the overall skill level is much higher at 205, a Beltran or Rosa type won’t cut it down there. Hell, if you’re losing to Joey Beltran, you probably don’t belong in the UFC, period.
