The Hype of a Myth

And with a wave of the hands it was done, the mystic, aura, the myth gone. The unstoppable force was, well stopped. This wasn’t  a triangle thrown out of nowhere, a mistake of underestimation. This was a man beating and broken. A hero who looked like he had finally falling.

In this instance everything that made Fedor Emelianenko, Fedor was shattered. The once perceived GOAT of MMA was left bloody and beaten by a bigger, more hungry foe. This isn’t to say this was the first time Fedor was out matched in size and might, but this was the first time it bested him in a way were error couldn’t be an excuse.

Which could be the excuse in Fedor’s last bout against Fabrcio Werdum. Fedor lost in the openning minuets, to a slick Triangle choke that Werdum placed with such ease that it had many uttering the word fluke. However, Antonio “Big Foot” Silva out-struck, out-grappled, outmatched “The Last Emperor” to were many begin to question if Fedor still had “it”. Talk of a lost of fire, under training began to run rampant soon after the lost. The MMA forums, twitter, and other social networks began to talk of retirement.  The hype of Fedor had been broken.

Now to bring back the mystic, Fedor begins the process of dropping down in weight. Fedor, who’s spent all of his fight career at Heavyweight, will fight at a catch weight match of 220 pounds. Being the smaller man is what built up the career of Emelianenko’s, which holds a list MMA’s top heavyweights in the beaten column. Now being the bigger man has changed the perception of  MMA’s once GOAT in Saturday’s bout against Strikeforce’s Light Heavyweight Champion Dan Henderson.

There is a weakness in his game. The questions of does he still have the fire, can he still compete against the best, did he fall for his hype, need to be answered Saturday. A loss to one man would be just that, a loss, but a loss Fedor is so much more. Couple that with being the bigger man, the loss grows ten fold. In the bout with Henderson it’s simple for Fedor, win, and you get back some of the hype, aura, and mystic you built in your career. Lose, well the hype will be gone for good.
