Josh Grispi Injured, Nam Phan Steps In to Face Matt Grice at UFC 136
Things aren't getting any better for once-heralded featherweight, Josh Grispi. After two embarrassing losses in a row to Dustin Poirier and George Roop, the Massachusetts native has now suffered an injury in training and will be pulling out of his UFC 136 fight against Matt Grice. One man's loss is another's gain though, as Nam Phan has answered the call to replace Grispi, fresh off a close decision loss to Mike Brown at UFC 133 last weekend. The UFC announced the change late last night.
Grice recently returned to the UFC after a multi-year absence but suffered a TKO loss against Ricardo Lamas back in early June. This is surely a must-win for both men.
Nam Phan (16-9)
Loss Mike Brown (unam. decision) - UFC 133
Loss Leonard Garcia (split decision) - TUF 12 Finale
Win Rodney Rhoden (submission - armbar) - Civic Disobedience 2
Matt "The Real One" Grice (14-4)
Loss Ricardo Lamas (TKO - head kick and punches) - UFC on Versus 4
Win David Gardner (unam. decision) - FCF 46
Win Thomas Schulte (submission - punches) - FCF 44

Grice could potentially wrestle his way to victory here. I am picking Phan to win though with his superior standup.

Smart Move By Nam
Good move cause if he win he is guaranteed 2 fights more but even if he loses he’ll still most likely get another fight since he is stepping in on short notice as a favor for the UFC. War Nam Phan.
keeps his job with 3 losses in a row?
I dont think so.
Nam is not chuck

He actually may survive, depending on how he loses.
The UFC likes to take care of guys who step up for injured fighters, and his last two fights have been somewhat controversial in manner.

He is taking the fight on short notice
They don’t cut fighters who do that. BTW Dan Hardy has 3 losses in a row also(not comparing the two just saying it does happen). Plus Nam has the fact he was robbed in one fight, he’s exciting, he’s a TUF alum, he’s not a person who causes problems, and he’s taking a fight on short notice as a replacement on his side.
Nam Phan is the opposite of Leonard Garcia.

Can someone enlighten me on how fighters that do not win TUF get a contract?
I don’t mean this in a mean/bitter way, I just literally do not comprehend it at a basic psychological level. I thought one had to win TUF in order to get a contract?
Winning TUF guarantees you a contract
And, for PR reasons, it guarantees you stay in the UFC fora while. Other guys are generally signed every year from each TUF season, but they can be cut quite quickly and have little job security should they lose.

and winners also get 6 figure contract
even though i still dont fully understand how it is a six figure contract when their starting fight money is $15000

Its considered a 6 figure contract
But I am pretty sure what they mean is they are signed for a certain amount of fights at a pay that will equal out to be in 6 figures. e.g 30k per fight 4 fight contract= 120k (wonder if they factor in win bonus as part of the 6 figures)
