Jeremy "Lil' Heathen" Stephens tells MMA Junkie he wants a crack at Dennis Siver for his next fight:

"I want to take out a top contender," Stephens said. "With Siver being an exciting fighter and doing pretty well, I think we'd put on a good one. I think he's perfect guy for me and a great scrap. It'd be an exciting matchup."

"He's a banger," he said of Siver. "He likes to throw. He's on a win streak, and I'm not doing too bad myself. I'd like to take his ass out and show the world I'm ready to take out the competition and move to the top."

"October would be the perfect time (with) the Diaz vs. St-Pierre card," he said. "I want on the main card. I want us to be the first fight and set the pace for the whole night

"Dennis Siver, let's do it."

My initial reaction when a fighter calls out someone on the premise that they’ll stand and bang is “give him Sean Sherk”.

Siver is a bad fight for him, in my opinion.

I don’t think Jeremy has the striking ability to hang with Siver when I look back at recent fights like the ones against Davis and Guillard. His only hope would be to knock him out.

Marcus Davis agrees

Davis deserved that. Thats what happens when you go for a takedown when the guy is 1 punch from being unconscious.

Why is Kim Winslow standing so far away from the fighters? She could have stepped in before Davis got blasted in the face again. /offtopiccomplaining

Guillard has been on a tear lately, but i do think Stephens won that fight, and fightmetrics and the majority of play-by-play guys agreed. Guillard always says he wants to stand and bang, but he clearly did otherwise, knowing of Stephens power. Siver may be a more technical striker, but Stephens has a good blend of power and precision.

How did fightmetric agree with Guillard losing to Stephens? They don’t have a full report on the fight, but in the first two rounds Guillard landed more significant strikes and in the third it was roughly tied.

Siver would beat Stephens. I think Siver used to be a stand and bang kind of fighter, but he’s really tightened up his striking and take down defense over the years. Stephens throws wild lopping punches. Siver could pick Stephens apart. Bad fight for him.

Why Pettis?

What good does it do Siver to beat a guy coming off a loss? And what good does it do a legitimate prostpect to have two losses in a row?

by Worldisart on Jul 7, 2011 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Because Pettis needs a bounceback opponent on the same level as he is, and Siver needs another step up the ladder.

Plus, if Pettis can’t beat Siver, he needs to be back fighting midlevel guys anyway.

Plus, the fight will be easy to promote. “MATRIX KICK! SPINNING HEEL KICK! STANDANDBANG!”

by Verklemptomaniac on Jul 7, 2011 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

this is completely wrong imo

Pettis has a popular fanbase and was about to get a title shot. He’s easily in the top15 in the UFC at the moment and top 5 in terms of marketability. It’s a fight with standandbang written all over it and will either get Pettis back up “in the mix” or gives Siver a nice scalp that will help him with the casual fan.

Also he’s no further down the ladder than Stephens.

He's coming off a loss

Siver could well be in a title shot eliminator his next fight.

Pettis needs to be rebuilt, he needs to be put in a showcase fight, Pettis versus Stephens would actually be the best option IMO.

Siver vs. Pettis just makes no sense, Siver is in that group with Guida, Guillard and Miller that are a win or two away from a shot. Pettis’ claim to a title shot was pretty flimsy and based on circumstance, not accomplishment.

by Worldisart on Jul 7, 2011 5:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Don’t forget, it wasn’t all that long ago that Siver lost a decision to Ross Pearson. Sure he beat GSot and Wiman, but I think he’s a little bit further down the ladder than Miller or Guillard. Siver vs. Stephens makes sense to me.

I dont think Siver is in that group just yet, he lost to Guillard (eventhough it was 3 years ago). I think he’s one fight away from being in that group. Beating Pettis would gain him access to it though.

Could be entertaining.

But I think Siver has earned a tougher guy; maybe the loser of Henderson/Miller.

by skeebop on Jul 7, 2011 5:11 PM EDT reply actions

Good call

That’d really test his improved take-down defense, too.

i like this fight.

I think Siver will use his wrestling though. Stephens has dangerous, dangerous power.

Here's an idea

Have Siver and Guida fight and Stephens can get Lauzon. I’d happily watch both of those.

by TMadeBurner on Jul 7, 2011 6:52 PM EDT reply actions

Right now I like the idea of a Siver vs Guillard rematch

But the idea of Siver vs Stephens is awesome…I would be very happy with that matchup as well.

Stephens is constantly calling out strikers. Maybe learn wrestling?
